I mean, isn't it just throwing a ton of money up front at the problem that they were going to have to pay anyway or are there some kind of currnt year salary cap problems? Tenorio, help me, you're my only hope.

No, you're basically right. The buyout gets him off the salary cap (and more importantly, he doesn't count against their DP limit) but they still have to pay him that $6m and of course they don't get anything in return (assuming literally anyone on the planet was dumb enough to buy him or trade for him). Funny enough, he's still under contract to the league until the end of the year so he might still end up playing for someone else. I can understand them waiting until the last minute just to see if any better choice materialised but nope, nothing doing and despite Tenorio's feverish speculation the league actually DIDN'T make up a new rule so the Galaxy could keep their least valuable player.

So could like, anyone in MLS just pick up Gio for free?

You probably wouldn't have to pay a transfer fee but you would probably have to pick up his wages, which I'm guessing are way higher than what you would want to pay for how he has been performing. I watch sports for fun, not so I could be an accountant.

And he's lasted in this league twice as long as Chivas did.
