drat this movie goes so hard. Did not expect it to triple down on the first movie like this. I do think this one is more drama focused than the humor of Into the spiderverse, but appropriate for a middle part.

Some thoughts:

-Miguel’s warning that breaking cannon breaks the universe does seem to have some truth in that we do see effects in India spider world, and then later he asks Peter B Parker to confirm such events happen and he nodes gravely.

-Gwen’s father quitting his job seems to be a way for fate to change. Her reveal and then powerful love filled speech changes him and maybe changes destiny. This is when she becomes determined that she can help Miles now.

-Miguel is the overbearing spider parent who wants to control all worlds and expect them to follow what he believes is the plan. The foil of course is Miles and Gwen’s dads who want their kids to spread their wings by the end.

I think poster watched a different film. It’s ok, who hasn’t walked into the wrong theater before.

But really, my audience groaned at the to be continued and then immediacy applauded. Audience scores are so far showing to be higher than critic scores even.

Right the idea is that Miguel is the overbearing Spider Dad. He’s not evil but he doesn’t let spiders spread their wings and do their own thing.

As a new parent, I enjoy how much this one is about the difficulty of being a good father/parent and the right way to raise kids.

Philip Lord talked about the sound issue. Basically the way it is mixed or compressed required theaters to turn volume up to 7 (and even made stickers for projectionist to do this), but I guess not every place wants to turn up theater volume.

As for the empire strikes back comparison:

In both films a hero ends up captured in the hands of an enemy. The main threat still looms, but the heroes friends have regrouped and promised to rescue him. So there’s some parallel.

Gwen’s arc is given a proper ending as she makes up with her dad and now perceives what the right thing to do is regarding Miles. Miles too seemed to come to terms with his parental conflict though that’s pulled from him a bit. So there is some resolution.

Thoughts on the soundtrack? So far I like the first movie soundtrack better with What’s up Danger and Sunflower and some others. Annihilate and Am I Dreaming (credits song) are good stuff off this one.

Original score is great, with Gwen’s theme being tons of rock fun and Miles still has the heroic hip hop mix. All the chase music is energetic. Also love how first and last song mirror each other (the drumming), but the final version has more of the other themes mixed in as “the band” is formed.

a joke I liked is when Jessica Drew is first escorting Miles into spider city, she says something about the spot and asks if anyone has jokes. Dozens of Spider people immediately start cracking jokes.

There aren't projectionists. That job died a long time ago. Three generations of film projectionists in my family and the job died on my watch.

I felt weirdly responsible.

That’s a cool family history.

Hmm what’s the proper term now then, digital switch pusher?

Miguel is just overworked and needs a nap. He’s not evil, just never gets a day off. 2099 and no paid vacation still.

Spider-verse 2-Movie Collector's Edition - Multi-Feature (4 Discs) - UHD/Blu-ray + Digital https://a.co/d/azEAEdo

2 movie special collection feels strange when we know there will be a third. I dunno if I’m into these extras also. Box is neat at least.

Rewatched this home on the 4K finally. It’s still as beautiful as ever. The writing felt stronger this time too as there’s a lot of parallels between Gwen and Miles. Going to have to check out the commentary next.

This one has a lot in common with Reloaded I think.
Both are question the first film (I’m spiderman vs is it good you are spiderman, and I’m the one vs is it good to have a messiah)

Both have an enemy they create and fight who goes out to get stronger before a destined final fight (spot and smith).
This final fight doesn’t happen in either movie.

Both instead of big action set pieces before a final twisting reveal.

And both have their own trolley problem: save his dad and dimension dies, save Trinity and Zion dies.

The difference here is that the choice is made in the reloaded, though we have no doubts about Miles choice either. The third matrix then deals with the consequences and is the weakest of the films. So hard to say if this is the best path or not.

It works well as a Gwen arc and even Miles deciding he wants to tell his family the truth. It just sets up more for next film.

It’s like fellowship in that it ends with the group split, mission left incomplete, and part of the group out to rescue others who were captured .

I do get wanting more though and I’m definitely hyped for next film. Spot seems too great for Miles to defeat alone so can understand giving that confrontation more time.

The commentary track on the physical release is good stuff: the three directors and lord and miller.
They talk a lot about how they wanted the art and animation to express the emotions of the characters and how they working it over and over.

One key point they make is how much they wanted to take the time and just let characters have family moments and just look out at the horizon. And you see that, the first hour has Gwen’s intro, and then a good 4 separate occasions of Miles and his family together. Plus the sequence of Miles and Gwen swinging around or gazing at the city.

I just got out of a showing of Into the Spider-Verse with a live orchestra and DJ. It was a really incredible experience! It’s legit my favorite movie of all time but I missed it in the theater, so this was more than worth the ticket price for me. If you get the chance to see it, don’t pass it up.

Awesome to hear it was good stuff. I had tickets but kids got sick. I’ve been to a similar event for Lotr, but live what’s up danger and such sounded pretty cool.
