Many A True Nerd can be hit or miss, but his solo stuff like his Stellaris playthroughs, while he has the consistency of getting poo poo wrong that sbf does or worse, can be surprisingly entertaining. Plus he cuts out grinding or miscellaneous UI poo poo, etc, and the videos are still quite long. He's fairly good at hyping up relatively mundane scenarios, too. Though I absolutely could not watch him play FTL, once you get to a certain point it's impossible to tolerate watching someone play that game badly

Liam's stuff is decent most of the time for solo content too, he interacts with chat on his stream(but does not read out donations most of the time) and he just did a full playthrough of World of Light in Smash ultimate on the hardest difficulty and got all the spirits (mostly offscreen), it was fun seeing certain fights on hard mode like The Boss, though unfortunately those super fights tend to eventually end with the AI accidentally self-destructing anticlimactically

oh also I've been feeling the gap left by SBF exploding, and I've no interest in fallout or anything so pat's stream archives et al don't do it for me, so I've been looking for some other video gamesmen on youtube to fill that gap. Kept getting recommended this dude, Alpharad, and he seems like an okay fella, though most of his videos are Smash Ultimate. He fairly heavily edits his videos(I think they're originally stream archives) and plays off his friends really well. His max level CPU tournament commentary makes me think of VGCW a bit.

this video was the first one I saw and piqued my interest, also shocked me at how much bullshit smash can handle before it really starts chugging

Except they could always just say "this is just a tip jar" and make it clear that while you support their work, they would be doing it whether you give them money or not, it's just a way to show appreciation for what they do. Like, offer a slightly higher tier for an ad-free podcast, or something. Nothing fancier, and they're set, they'd have no obligations.

They have left an absurd amount of money on the table for seriously no reason due to their obstinacy. Best Friends had one of the most devoted fanbases I've seen outside of the likes of Giant Bomb or Rooster Teeth. I'm not saying fleece them for everything they can, but giving an outlet than isn't "buy our lovely injoke t-shirts you'd not be caught dead outside your house in" would have been huge. There's something to be said for living comfortably off modest means, but having extra to put away in savings is always good too. Or, poo poo, they could use the extra income to pay animators for fancy stream intros, animated shorts, etc, like the Game Grumps do since they have at least one Game Grumps Animated per week.

And, as notable with Matt's patreon, you can hide the income, which frankly I don't know why it's not hidden on all projects. Letting people know exactly how much you make leads to people demanding things, which is of course why Matt hid the total. Should allow for hiding backer numbers too, but I can understand why they don't hide those.

I do think if this was his idea for the Best Friends Patreon, well, I could see why Woolie and Pat would balk at it. poo poo looks like a goddamn kickstarter page with the amount of "stretch goals" he's got up there. 250 a month lol

edit: also there's no guarantee they'll be able to keep this stuff going forever, or if the ways they do make money become more difficult. It only makes sense to make as much as they can while they can, in case the bottom falls out on this stuff eventually.

Jim Sterling makes A MILLION BAZILLION DOLLARS from his patreon, how come he doesn't put out longer videos?!!! He should be producing much more for how much he pulls in.

This lady makes half a million dollars a year from artist tutorials?! preposterous, that is simply ludicrous, she's a decent artist but she doesn't deserve that sort of income from drawing high-res pictures of lola bunny or jessica rabbit and making tutorials.

etc

people on the internet are bad and telling them how much you make(oh lol as I typed that I immediately was reminded of the Skullgirls kickstarter for Squigly. Remember that? Remember the outcry, 180,000 DOLLARS FOR A SINGLE FIGHTING GAME CHARACTER????!!! even with an in-depth totally reasonable breakdown of the costs there was still massive backlash) just gives them even more things to be lovely about

Dias posted:

I think they didn't want to make it just a tip jar, that's why they felt weird about actually trying with a Patreon. Plus, if they were already having internal issues, committing to a Patreon as a group probably felt like a bad move.
oh for sure, but this has been a thing since patreon first started, I was recommending it to them from the word go. They've got a really dedicated fanbase, they'd rake it in even on tips. It'd be even better now individually, as Matt has already gotten AT LEAST 250 a month from his immediately after opening it, and that's assuming everyone is the bottom tier. If he was able to survive without it before, that extra lets him do stuff like hire editors or pay his artist friends for more animations etc.

finland is not the internet, and letting internet dipshits know what sort of money you make only leads to trouble.

from personal experience shitheads on the internet if they know how much money you made from something you did as a job and did not consider it worthy of that income will be extra super lovely about it

like when I explained the whole Valve sending me a 1099 tax form because I sold so much stuff on their marketplace, people(specifically: goons) came out of the goddamn woodwork to call me a money launderer, scammer, man of dubious morals etc because they did not consider what I did "normal income", or work worthy of making a lot of money. Same thing with like, doing reviews for toys/comics/etc, or drawing fetish porn for patrons, or playing video games for a living, you can't tell me you've not heard anyone say that's ridiculous that they can make a living from that.

Their exact income should be their business unless they choose to share it. Why does everyone need to know?

Oxyclean posted:

I'm almost certain they once brought up being a bit uncomfortable with a tip jar after how generous people got with the mailbag.
I mean, poo poo, fair enough on that. Can you limit how much can be donated on a patreon per person, so that one person can only do like 5 bucks a month max? That'd be a reasonable solution.

Ridiculous mailbags are just an aspect you have to accept of being an internet celebrity who accepts gifts. People will do that poo poo every single time eventually. Someone sent a top of the line gaming PC to a dude at Giantbomb. this dude(who I'm happy to see is now well over 1k a month from doing reviews) was super antsy about doing a patreon but it allowed him to do what he wants full time and also people send him basically any transformer(and gundam models) he could want now. He must have gotten 5k worth of gifts at this point, after less than a year of having a PO Box to send stuff to.

It doesn't really apply here, but in general people knowing each other's income is a good thing because it makes it harder for employers to gently caress over workers since people know your salary should be.

Isn't still taxable income even if you can deduct the other costs from the taxes? or am I confusing some english terms here
Yeah, it doesn't really apply to this. I absolutely agree with you in regards to "normal" work, where someone is working for a company etc, but if they are self-employed via a patreon or similar, I do not think that should necessarily be public.
