Alita was cool, good action and I appreciated the full throated sincerity of the whole thing. Didn't think it was going to be so brutal since it's pg13

Avengers endgame was kind of the opposite I guess? Also I thought I had read every crazy thing that happened in that movie but I completely missed the part where they cure aging (and presumably mortality??) and it's just used as a throw away gag lmao. This is the stupidest goddamn group of superheroes

drat tigers are not afraid was good. Owes a huge debt to Guillermo del Toro, specifically Pan's labyrinth but was enough of its own thing. I imagine it's a really hard watch if you've got kids so be safe out there

Almost gave up on John wick 3 because there were too many previews/commercials on the Blu-ray but glad I stuck it out because it's good to see the raid guys getting work

I think I tried to watch Aquaman twice and fell asleep both times during the middle of it. The CGI fights at the end were so busy that my eyes were hurting.

Monos was a great movie about the political and psychological limbos of being a child soldier in Colombia with some of the most striking mountain cinematography I've seen in a while in the opening half hour. Parts of it looked like Yellow Earth before conflict starts up and the group shuffled off into the claustrophobic jungle for the rest of the film. Really good performances from the teens too which is a rarity

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time ended up sending me for a loop at the end. Is the time-traveler dude just manipulating women from the past into keeping a painting around that he can later own and be rich? It seems like this was his second time - the first being the Aunt.

I grabbed the book and an about halfway through, but it's a different story. Though I guess it could be the Aunt? Edit: Finished the book - not the Aunt.

I'd certainly recommend it.

Watched John Wick 3 recently. Ever a since figuring out that the henchmen always wear helmets so the same 5 stuntmen can get killed over and over through the movie, it sort of takes me out of the story.

First noticed this in one of the Resident Evil movies. The whole cast of extras is like 8 people in helmets, and they just get killed over and over.

Look John wick 3 isn't a huge studio movie like the raid: redemption, they can't afford to just hire 100 individual stunts people

I just watched Midsommar and I can only describe it with a story.

Years ago I went to a thing called Sleep No More which was supposed to be some kind of live interactive version of hamlet set in some building in the village in NYC. I took my wife. It was garbage. Like drama club nerd poo poo garbage. I got lost. I got pissed. I got sepearated from my wife after paying almost 200$ for the tickets. Literally the split ya up and put us in different parts of the building.

After 20 minutes I was seething mad, nothing wa snaking sense. I felt ripped off so I just started asking the people guarding the fire exits where the bar was and they shushed me (they were also wearing masks like in the orgy scene of Eyes Wide Shut).

Flustered and pissed I eventually found the bar. I was furious. Luckily a few beers calmed me down. My wife came in about an hour later and was laughing because she knew I'd hated it.

That feeling that I felt sitting in that bar is exactly how I feel right now. What a garbage rear end, hamfisted, piece of poo poo movie.

I still love A24 movies though so whatever.

I only saw a bit of the Dark Tower but man...Idris Elba is such a striking figure as Roland that I wish more movies could have been made from that series. Also, Matt McConaughey as that villain...how can anyone really expect to beat him, given his powers?

In the Shadow of the Moon - Pretty cool I guess, although I'm not really sure how to feel about the theme or message that seems to suggest that it's OK to suppress freedom of expression by murdering people if such expression might create the next Hitler/genocide/civil war/etc. That's kind of... fascist? Also the plot has a pretty big paradox.

It was good.
However for the love of loving god Hollywood:
WE DON'T NEED TO SEE BATMAN'S PARENTS DIE ANY loving MORE. Seriously counting the TV show Gotham this is literally the third time in five loving years that we've seen it happen:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XB2z2HQBsQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3lys6bJ-qE
and that's not even counting the video games and animated movies. One of the best parts about the MCU's use of Spider-man is that we didn't get any Uncle Ben, that doesn't mean it didn't happen, but we don't see it, And it makes sense why, Because what happens after is so much more interesting.

Finally watched Candyman and drat it was good. The scene where Helen meets Candyman and is entranced by him, only to wake up in Ann Marie's apartment covered in blood with a decapitated dog and a bloody crib in the next room was such a disorienting, amazing sequence. Didn't know it was based on a Clive Barker story but he seems to have a fascination with characters being seduced by "exquisite" pain and death between this and Hellraiser.
