The flash

I may never watch another superhero film again.
Some brief moments of enjoyment from Michael Keaton can't save this. I usually enjoy super hero slop, but this was just bad everything.

The colour purple (1985)

Really enjoyed this although it has some really odd tone at time, moments of almost slapstick comedy following a scene of human brutality and the music often did not fit the scene. Very much a film of the 80s.

The Arbor (2010)

Docu-drama, really hard to describe this film but was fantastic, essentially it's actors lip syncing to actual audio recordings of people, it's weird at first but it really works. Incredibly sad though.

Who are the dead people?

It's got a scene that has deep faked various actors who have had the superman roll. The CG is bad and it looks dumb, it's only for a few seconds though.

Honestly it's one of the lesser problems of the film in my opinion.

La Haine is very good but the cliff is pretty steep if any of the elements hadn't worked (and looking back a lot of the story beats aren't exactly fresh). Cassel is incredible, the other two guys were good but he nailed it.

I'd argue it was pretty fresh in 1995.
I should rewatch this, it's been years.

All the Beauty and the Bloodshed

Documentary about Nan Goldin, her life, her art and her modern day fight to take down the Sackler family. Beautiful and tragically sad at times, as a photographer hobbiest I absolutely loved it, but I think even if you're not into photography this is a superb documentary and well worth a watch.

Would make an excellent companion piece to Paris is burning as both cover the LGBT scene in the 80s.

When I worked at blockbusters a mum rented Dreamer for her daughter and friends. A U rated film about a girl who saves a horse.

I accidentally put 'The Dreamers ' in the box. An 18 rated film about teenagers exploring their sexuality in Paris.

Ahhhh congrats. Its one of those films I wish I could see fresh again. Its still a great film on repeat watchings but nothing beats your first time.

Wait....you are talking about the original right? Not the spike Lee one

Yeah she came in the next day and gave one of my co-workers an earful.
Wrong discs in boxes happened all the time but that was the funniest occurrence for me.

We also had it the other way around with customers returning their own films by mistake. There was this one guy who used to return his porn collection to us all the time by mistake.

The weirdest and slightly related occorance was someone trading in a PS3 with a beastiality film in it. We ended up with the cops round and we had to set up a TV in the back so they could confirm, it was weird.

So much of the film is amazing too. It's a real rollercoaster of quality.

The Last Duel I thought was really interesting. Reminded me Scott isn't a director you can just dismiss because he puts out crap sometimes.

Apparently it's not in the theatrical cut. There is zero naval action so we don't get to see the Orient's explosion blowing out the theatres speakers.

Well shot and well acted but just didn't feel like it had anything to say. Definitely one of Finchers more forgettable movies.

I liked Oppenheimer. But my biggest shock was how easily I could hear the dialogue compared to most of Nolans other films.

Speaking of,

Léon: The Professional - somehow never saw this before. I wasn't sure what to expect from it going in; I knew it had a "reputation", but I was steeling myself for a whole lotta weird. Ends up it's just generally pretty entertaining and full of fun directorial choices and shots, stuff I could definitely see informing the playful visuals of Fifth Element. High-speed camera truck-ins down a street and onto a storefront, a sudden close-up of a clock, that sort of thing. The weirdness at the center of it of course is the relationship between Leon and Mathilda, which... ultimately isn't really too eyebrow-raising I guess. Mostly because it's lampshaded away by her precociousness and the inherent absurdity of a 12-year-old whose family has been murdered and decides to become a hitman. You don't see that kind of dynamic every day, most writers/directors would shy right away from it. But I guess that in itself serves to obscure the grosser aspects of the relationship? It's one thing to have a Bart Simpsons/Brendon Small/etc precocious kid figure who is basically just a small (and particularly intelligent/mentally agile/devious at that) adult and who everyone underestimates and that's where their superpower comes from, that's Mathilda's bag. But adding in the relationship with Leon just sort of makes it read like pedophilia fanfiction. Like this is what someone imagines a 12-year-old in their fantasy world to be.

I feel like I missed something plot-wise that may or may not make this whole angle all the weirder: when she tells the hotel receptionist that she's Leon's lover, which leads to them getting kicked out of the hotel. Why did she even do that? Unless she was literally trying to get them evicted, which, Why even include this scene? I feel like it didn't even figure into the plot meaningfully. Is Besson just stunting on us, bragging openly about what he can get away with?

I don't know what cut I saw of Leon, but it always came across as Leon being very uncomfortable and freaked out with her advances, so the relationship never seemed creepy to me. Shes a hosed up kid who saw her whole family butchered and is acting out for attention.
Perhaps there are scenes I didn't see that change that
Besson is 100% a creep though.

First act is a silly and to arty for its own good but once it hits the 2nd act the film gets substantially better IMO. Great performances and interesting characters but that first act holds it back from being great.

Taken was such a massive hit and it's hard to understand why. "They took my daughter" action films have been around forever but this just clicked with audiences.

Not saying it's a bad film, it's enjoyable enough, but it did so well for what it is.

People having fun doing bad things is a plot in a LOT of cinema. It's not like the film is endorsing their behaviour. It's a Hollywood film, it catches up to them eventually.
