Maybe I'm misinterpreting what "faction" means here but it seems weird and probably bad that different parts of the military are fighting each other for control.

Also he gave the dog the rank of Air Chief Marshall (equivalent to a four star USAF General).

I live in Thailand, it's pretty nuts here. Also, these are actual election posters from the Local Power Party.

So I've been reading about the Thai royal family, and apparently the king just up and decided last year that the Crown Estate was his personal property?

Not really an orgy, but he had a birthday party for his dog, where he had his wife (and some other women) wearing nothing but a g-string, feeding birthday cake to the aforementioned hound. He also thought it would be a great idea to have this recorded on video.

Note that, regardless of 'senior royal family members should not be doing stuff like this', Thailand is very, very conservative sexually. Porn is illegal here for instance, as are most sex industries.

In general, the average Thai is very pro-monarchy in the general sense, but maybe not so pro Vajiralongkorn in the specific one. However, as it's illegal to criticise the royal family, it's hard to get an actual gauge on his real popularity. Anecdotally, I can tell you a few things that probably give you some idea.
- If you go to the cinema here, after the commercials and the trailers but before the movie starts, everybody stands up while a song and a short film about how great the king is, plays on the screen. If you don't stand up, you get thrown out of the theatre.
- Yellow is the colour of the royal house. On holidays that are linked to the royal family - King's birthday, old king's birthday, coronation day, etc, literally everybody is wearing yellow.
- Every government building, including schools, police stations, etc, has a huge picture of the king out front. Many commercial billboards also have large pictures of the king if there is no paid content there.
- I dropped a banknote on the street once, and quickly put my foot on it to stop it blowing away. The Thais around me were shocked and quickly encouraged me to pick it up before anyone saw. Putting your foot on a picture of the king can get you into trouble apparently.
- There's an annual event called Bike for Dad which is to encourage a healthy lifestyle and also to show loyalty to the royal family. You see a lot of people proudly wearing the t-shirts from previous events.

About porn. Despite the reputation as a hive of sin, Thailand is very, very sexually conservative. It's illegal to make, own or distribute porn here. Likewise sex toys are illegal. Pretty much any kind of sex-work from stripping to sexy massages and actual prostitution is super illegal. Having said that, you can walk through the Asok area of Bangkok and see policemen just chatting with street vendors selling all kinds of sex toys, turn a corner and find yourself in a street of strip clubs where policemen are posing for selfies with tourists, and of course if you want anything from a happy ending to a companion for the night, all of these things are openly advertised outside the salons, bars and clubs. This is allowed to happen because the owners of those businesses pay the police to not have any problems. My boss lives in the same condo building as a police captain. Police captains earn around $25k a year and this guy lives in a $3k a month apartment and drives a new C class Mercedes. As s senior officer though he gets a cut of all the 'fines' and other income from all of his subordinate officers.

That's a pretty standard set up for most developing countries in SE Asia, Central America and elsewhere. It's practically a stereotype.
