I think it's bad form for the head of government/state to joke about killing the head of state/government of another country. Probably especially if the "joker's" country is right next door and much weaker than the other guy's country. This once I'm alright with DECORUM.

And it's not like Trudeau has hidden his dislike for Trump.

I wonder if all those people clamoring for a wall ever looked to our side of the pond. From 2000 to 2017, 33.000 people drowned in the Mediterranean Sea trying to get to Europe. 33k! In less than 20 years! And that's only those we know about, the real number is likely quite a bit higher. A wall or barrier that can be crossed with relatively little effort compared to crossing the Mediterranean Sea will ultimately not deter all who try to get a better life in the US. Especially not if climate change really starts to kick in and devastates the poorer countries in America.

Things are just incredibly screwed up in your country in a way I simply can't get my head around. Like, isn't the point of child porn laws to protect the children? What kind of sense does it make to imprison teenagers and putting them on the motherfucking sex offenders registry for simply sending each other nudes of themselves?

I mean, every country has it's problems, and we have our fair share of it here in Germany. I'm genuinely worried about the strengthening far right and the rise in xenophobia and honest to god antisemitism (here in Germany!!! wtf wtf wtf, how stupid can we be???). But the way America is screwed in such incredibly stupid ways at times is just unique.

At least she wouldn't appoint as horrible judges as Trump? And would perhaps run a halfway competent administration that didn't gently caress up routine task necessary to govern the nation?

Grasping at straws here.

Have you missed the last few years? It would be nice if a lovely person like Tulsi Gabbard couldn't ever hope to win the Democratic nomination, but I thought there was no way for Trump to win the Republican nomination, much less the presidency, either.

lol so no second referendum and she does what, try to put her plan up for vote again? The one that just lost by an unprecedented margin?

If she would have lost, it would have meant new elections. A second referendum is still in the cards now that she survived, but the possibility of a no-deal Brexit have also increased. At least a new general election would have meant an almost certain extension of the deadline.

Ah I did not know that a second referendum would be something May would do, thanks!

Well, it's complicated. May doesn't want to hold a second referendum, but neither does the leader of the opposition, Jeremy Corbyn. But a lot of members of parliament want one. It's all kinds of crazy right now, because a big majority of MPs is against May's deal, and a (differen) majority is against no-deal Brexit (including May and Corbyn). And there might also be a majority against a second referendum. But sooner or later they will have to agree on something, or they will crash out of the EU by default. Right now, it's anybody's guess whether Brexit will be delayed/abolished, or if there will be a no-deal Brexit, or if there actually is a deal that can get a majority in the Commons and the backing of the EU.

This is a great example of 'tragedy of the commons' jfc.

Yeah, it's honestly fascinating as an outsider looking in. There are all kinds of crazy things going on.

Take Jeremy Corbyn. He's the most left wing major party leader of any party in the West. Like straight up nationalization of key industries, strong regulations of the economy, big redistribution, sack the rich, etc. He's been against British EU membership because the EU is a neoliberal institution, and his downright socialist policies would be illegal under EU law. He's been in favor for Brexit for decades, and was never shy about that. He's also the darling of the Labour party base.

But the Labour MPs are mostly Tony Blair third way liberals. Meaning they are fans of deregulation, the free market, etc. They hate Jeremy Corbyn. They even had a vote of no confidence in him, which triggered a new leadership election in the Labour party. But as I said, the base loves him, so he easily won reelection. And those liberal Labour MPs are of course strongly against Brexit. Both because they are genuinely Europhiles, and because they are a bit afraid what would happen if Brexit happens and Jeremy Corbyn becomes prime minister, possibly implementing his far left agenda.

It also doesn't help the whole process that big minorities in both parties didn't vote for the party orthodoxy. A huge part of the working class Labour base voted Leave, and a huge number of cosmopolitan Tories voted Remain. Both parties are deeply divided over Brexit. Neither Labour nor Tories can agree among themselves whether the UK should leave the EU, or what form a break with the EU should have. And so of course there can also be no agreement between the parties.

Add to this the fact that few things scare Tories as much as the prospect of a Jeremy Corbyn government. A genuinely left wing prime minister, the horror! Because that's what's keeping Theresa May in office. Tories are deeply afraid that a new general election will sweep Corbyn to power, with Britain not even in the EU to temper his "worst" impulses. And of course, no conservative wants to challenge her for the job, because they now Brexit will be a shitshow that will sink their career. May can't bring her MPs to support her agenda, but neither can the MPs dump her.

There are all kinds of prisoner's dilemmas going on, it's super screwed up.

Fire breaks out at Tucson, Ariz. hotel in 1972, killing 29 people. A 16-year-old who was nearby is convicted "on the basis of little more than that proximity and trial evidence that 'black boys' like to set fires." Much later, evidence emerges suggesting that the fire was not caused by arson. (Prosecutors also allegedly withheld evidence of the same.) After 42 years of imprisonment, prosecutors offer him immediate release if he pleads guilty to the original charges. He accepts. Can he sue about the original prosecution? Ninth Circuit: No, he just pleaded guilty. Dissent: "Far from being the product of a new, constitutionally conducted second trial, [the man's] second conviction was the product of his desperate circumstances. In his 60's, he faced acceptance of the plea offer or waiting years for a habeas petition to work its way through the courts."

I'm really finding it hard to swallow that two racist homophobes who were stalking Chicagi to commit a pre-meditated hate crime were able to identify an actor from Empire...

Also, reading the account:

quote:

According to the TMZ report, “Sources directly connected to Jussie tell TMZ, the actor arrived in Chicago from New York late Monday, and at around 2 AM he was hungry and went to a Subway. We’re told when he walked out, someone yelled, ‘Aren’t you that f***ot ‘Empire’ n*****?'”

The reports states that both the men were white and wearing ski masks and attacked the actor. “Jussie as he fought back, but they beat him badly and fractured a rib. They put a rope around his neck, poured bleach on him and as they left they yelled, ‘This is MAGA country,'” TMZ reported.

Who always carries ski masks around in case they run into a person they want to gay bash? It's all really strange. And just to avoid confusion, I don't doubt for a second that this attack didn't happen. But this can't be the whole story. Where they stalking him or something?

It’s also been super cold in Chicago lately so maybe the ski masks might have served a dual purpose here, i.e. keeping the face you want to conceal nice and warm while you commit a horrific hate crime

German goon here. I did my 9 months compulsory military service, and this isn't surprising at all. I was a Panzergrenadier, which wikipedia tells me means mechanized infantry. Anyway, our tanks would constantly break down. When we were out on field exercise during the winter, only three of our 7 tanks we took with us had functioning heating. Over the 4 weeks we were out, at any given moment, at least two of our tanks were unable to be used and had to undergo lengthy repairs. Our bulletproof vests were in shambles. At least the rifles worked. I heard that the professional soldiers got better gear than us lowly conscripts (which is understandable), but that they had similar issues, too.

Our military has been drastically underfunded for quite some time. Of course, when I mention that in the D&D Germany thread ("perhaps we should spend enough money on the troops to be able to meet our NATO commitments?"), I get laughed out of the thread

To offer a small excuse, absorbing East Germany's military was apparently a huge drain, according to the NCOs in my company. We got a lot of useless tanks and equipment and buildings etc. that the military spent a lot of money to make use of it, but was ultimately forced to trash, which also cost a lot. Can's just throw a tank into a landfill, of course. Then the GDR of course had an oversized military, incurring huge personnel costs for the Bundeswehr. And we switched to a fully professional army relatively recently, conscription was abolished a bit less than 8 years ago. And there have been several ministers of defense who lost their job because they couldn't get the procurement/bureaucracy issues right. It's pretty shambolic right now tbh. I think we could do an adequate job to defend Germany from a conventional invasion, but we're not a lot of help if we have to do anything outside our borders.

And of course, there's some corruption going on with funneling money into our domestic military industrial complex while not getting our money's worth out of those deals.
