It's not that there isn't an element of politics to oil prices, the US has always leaned on and/or used weapons deals and defense partnerships as bribes with countries like Saudi Arabia and other "friendly" exporters to keep the taps open because low prices undermine countries like Iran and Russia. But it doesn't seem likely Trump even has an understanding of this, let alone has improved our position in that regard.

Wait, what? How does this work? Even though you have insurance through whatever stupid loving system you guys have, they won't accept it at all?

Each provider negotiates with each insurer, if they don't come to an agreement the provider can choose not to accept that insurer or the insurer can choose not to cover that provider. Yes, the process is as inefficient and complex as it sounds

The whole Hilary thing just happened, how are we already pushing the same tired bullshit again

The people who didn't vote or voted third party or voted for Trump because "ugh, Hillary again" in competitive states are loving morons. There was a clearly superior choice in that first past the post election.

That Trump was even remotely competitive is far more an indictment of the electorate than Clinton.

https://www.consumerfinance.gov/about-us/newsroom/consumer-financial-protection-bureau-settles-broker-high-interest-credit-offers/

quote:

Washington, D.C. — The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (Bureau) today announced a settlement with Mark Corbett, a broker of contracts offering high-interest credit to veterans.

As described in the consent order, the Bureau found that Corbett violated the Consumer Financial Protection Act of 2010 by misrepresenting to consumers that the contracts he facilitates are valid and enforceable when, in fact, the contracts are void because veterans’ pension payments are unassignable under federal law; misrepresenting to consumers that the offered product is a purchase of payments and not a high-interest credit offer; misrepresenting to consumers when they will receive their funds; and failing to disclose to consumers the applicable interest rate on the credit offer.

Under the terms of the consent order, Corbett is permanently banned from brokering, offering, or arranging agreements between veterans and third parties under which the veteran purports to sell a future right to an income stream from the veteran’s pension. Corbett must also pay a civil money penalty of $1.

There are good companies out there but there's plenty that will gently caress their employees over while laughing to the bank as well.

That your company is paying out money to people who are working when they're in fact not getting paid themselves is really good, even if it's bad for the company's financials.

They probably employ people who have options. Building services, food service, security, etc aren't going to see a dime.

Terrifying Effigies posted:

It's probably because we're at full employment and companies realize they can't (fully) gently caress over (some) employees when they can walk to another job without (too much) trouble. I sure didn't see any offers to carry over folks during the 2013 shutdown, it was all use your PTO or go in the hole because they knew they could screw folks without consequence.

It was similar in 2013. Contractors dealing with technical or senior people who could find other work sent folks to "training" or just kept paying them. More replaceable employees of contractors were basically told to gently caress off. The employment situation today could mean more contractors fell into the getting paid category, but unskilled staff is still definitely getting nothing.

Warren is making a serious go at it and wants to implement a tax on assets over 50 million

If that happens it may without exaggeration be the most serious policy change in the last half a century of American politics. So far the only complaints I've heard about Warren are on personality, her policy positions seem solid.

Going to keep on it because it really is a huge deal, the wealth tax Warren proposed is a serious percentage and immediately plants her far to the left of any other "serious" candidates.

Warren's wealth tax proposal should get more attention too, it's even more significant in a lot of ways for a class of people who can basically define their own taxable income. Or, as AOC puts it
