i was looking at my laser printer the other day and was thinking "oh man it would be great if i could use the fuser to make toast". so ofc then i went to open it up and reprogram one of the paper sizes to toast but when i tried to open it there was just a chip that had hitler and stalin on it that said "lol closed source fucker!" i stumbled outside, fell to my knees, and wailed at the sky and lo did the clouds part and the visage of rms appear. my voice wavered as i made my desperate plea: "rms save me, for i am being oppressed!" his gaze fell upon me, chins rippling beneath the beard of the blessed as he was forced to look downward onto such a lowly creature as i, and the heavens did boom "have you ever thought that maybe the whales want it?"

“What’s ‘negative rape’?” Stolfi asked. “Just what you might think it is. What you and we call rape is forcing somebody to have sex even if they don’t want it. Negative rape is forcing someone not to have sex, even if they and their prospective whale do want it. It is a very common problem in your society. A guy and a whale want to get it on but some third party forces them to stop. This of course is a great way to assert power for that third party. It takes a lot of power to override the natural sex drive,” McAfee explained. “So you like loving whales?” Stolfi asked. “Of course I do,” McAfee said. “Everybody does, if they are allowed to decide for themselves about the matter. Remember the Ninth Commandment of my software?” “Have fun?”

i think bitmain, one of the big chinese miners and run by one third of the ver collective, has seen some pretty big losses recently then there's also the video posted earlier of that guy tearing down his mining farm so maybe??

BangersInMyKnickers posted:my time and supporting infrastructure are worthless so this makes sense bitcoin has definitely been profitable enough to cover labor and other costs. like i have never touched the poop and have no intention of ever doing so, but most of the "this makes no sense as a business" lols died when the bubble went over $1000 and stayed there, because most of those costs are fixed (or nearly so) instead of scaling with hashrate. it's not going to be a good business to be in ten years from now but the same might be said of writing webapp backends in scala or running a brick and mortar appliance store

In general, mining was only profitable if the price kept rising. Finding cheap electricity makes it marginal, the real profit was when you could sell high. Each block's rewards are mostly the inflating "12.5 new Bitcoin every 10 minutes!" instead of the ~1 bitcoin of fees. When the next halvening occurs, it will make it that much harder to profit. Specifically, Bitmain would have been okay if they stuck to "selling the shovels" (but they even hosed that up) but now who will they sell miners to in a downturn? Coinbase might be fine, but they also need lots of volume for fees to justify continued investment.

i should add that it's also specifically not a good business to be in right now because there was a massive mining buildout, but that buildout happened precisely because it was extremely profitable to mine bitcoins for a while there. there are no significant barriers to entry/exit with cryptocurrency mining so the mining economy will always move rapidly towards an equilibrium of tiny profit margins. but that movement does have some lag time because it requires actually building new machines and so huge price spikes can totally be a bonanza for current miners in the short term... if they don't throw it all away building out assuming the spike will last forever don't touch the poop kids
