Worst Can't Let Hillary Go Cartoon: A (Garrison). Tinsley can't win any of these because his comics are always too bland and uninteresting to be the worst of anything. A's so dense with right-wing grievance that I can imagine Garrison crying as he's drawing it. Worst cartoon about a Tragedy (Mass shooting) D (ugh). This would've been a tough choice otherwise, but jfc. Worst Cartoon about a Tragedy (Other) E (Garrison). Had to choose a pipebomb one here, because it caused some of the usual politoon suspects to contort themselves into knots trying to find a way to make themselves the victim. Garrison's stands out because it's also confusing. They are both the creators and victims of a false flag? They mailed bombs to themselves? Or did they cause the bombs to be sent to themselves because of their rhetoric? Who the hell knows. Worst Obituary Cartoon: C (Dry Bones). I hate Dry Bones a lot as a cartoon. I hate those Venn Diagram eyes. I hate the MS-Paint coloring. I hate the voids his characters are in. I hate the rabid, awful, Islamophobic Zionism. I hate the little dog. I had to laugh though, because the composition of the cartoon looks like Dry Bones guy looked into the sun so much that his mouth turned into a little butthole. Worst Caricature: F (Australian dude). Though not the most bigoted, it was such a bad caricature that it caused thinkpieces. Worst "A Thing Happened" Cartoon: H (J.R. Rose) Why does J.R. Rose have a job cartooning? He never says anything clever or interesting, though I was amused at his deadeyed couple looking out the window as the flood waters come higher and higher. Worst Label: F (Payne). Overall, this is a weak set of contenders, but I hate Payne and his stupid cars and his stupid false equivalencies. Most Incomprehensible: E (Benson?). What. Seriously, what? Least Concealed Bigotry (Racism) in a Cartoon: A (Garrison). F (Delonas) was a strong contender for this category, as you'd expect. Stiglich (B) also provided an unusually strong "performance" as well. What's Misdemeanor Guy's Shirt say? 'Black Power Matter'? Still though, Garrison manages to combo the racism like he's playing Racist Killer Instinct. Least Concealed Bigotry (Islamophobia) in a Cartoon: A (Mike Lester). Thought for sure Dry Bones had this in the bag! He really poops himself over those kites. Lester does the racism though with a powerful dose of dehumanizing. Least Concealed Bigotry (LGBT) in a Cartoon: H (Stonetoss), G (also Stonetoss!) as a second choice. Good lord, Stonetoss really outdid himself this year. Martian Magazine's just baffling and the rest are tedious pieces of 'I identify as <X>! Haha!' hackwork. Least Concealed Bigotry (Misogyny) in a Cartoon: D (Branco). I'm shocked this one is not filled with Dr. Ford comics. Or Lester's comics. S. Kelly's is about a non-event so who cares. McCoy's is always riding the abortion hobby-horse, and Garrison's confuses me since it seems to be arguing for both sides of #MeToo. Lolling because in F, Branco's honest-to-God email address is branco@reagan.com Worst Rape Apologia: A (Delonas) by a country mile; Delonas is the actual worst. (See what I say about Worst Political Cartoon below.) Worst election cartoon: C (Garrison) because it combines Garrison's trademark overlabeling, a mangled visual metaphor that doesn't make sense if you think about it for five seconds, and his 'up is down' worldview Laziest Non-Gorrell Cartoon: I (Stiglich). Combines the laziness of the blank comic with the terrible worldview. Most Easily Reinterpreted: C (McCoy). I was going to go A but C embodies AGC to such an extent that I wasn't totally sure if it was a clunky edit or not when I first saw it. Most Willfully Dense: B (Lester). C and I were strong contenders in an overall weak field, but B has that obtuseness the category demands. Worst Gaslighter Cartoon: E (Branco). As much as I loathe Ted Rall and his bad art, G is... not that bad a take and not that bad a prescription? Overall Worst Political Cartoon: F (DELONAS) A sucks because it's Dry Bones and Dry Bones sucks as a matter of course, B is truly execrable (and one of the few comics from The Nib!) and was almost the dark horse winner of the whole category for me, C was probably Garrison's worst but is visually boring, D is revolting because of the Dumbass Boomer takeness of it, E is just general Prickly City sub-mediocrity, G is the sort of racist conspiracy garbage we expect from Garrison but lacking in the funny cracked symbolism, and I don't remember H but it's just boring-looking bible-thumping nonsense. F though, distinguishes itself as one of the worst (yet somehow not *the* worst) of Sean Delonas's, who is probably the worst of our modern political cartoonists: a willfully dense racist, sexist, misanthropic oaflord who infuses his butt-ugly anti-masterpieces with the dumbest possible takes. Sean Delonas is one of those angry and sad buffoons that I'd bet would take pride knowing that he has a 'Controversies' section of his Wikipedia page that is an order of magnitude larger than the 'Career' section. May the 'Award' section always stay unfilled. Best Edit/Parody: A (Triple-Q) by far. It nails all that we know and love about Garrison in one nice little package.

Oh, boy, it's time for my annual post! Worst Can't Let Hillary Go Cartoon: g As terrible as these are ('f' is certainly one I managed to block from memory), I have to give it to this one as it's "'Hillary Clinton is such an attention!' he says, paying attention to Hillary Clinton". As I recall, she hadn't even really done anything when he did this either. Worst cartoon about a Tragedy (Mass shooting): d I was tempted to go for one of the more overt ones, but on reflection, no, this is a perfect storm of heinousness. Worst Cartoon about a Tragedy (Other): b Mail bombs? No, the real problem is rudeness. I suppose in a certain light, sending someone a bomb is pretty uncivil, mind. There's something about the flippancy in 'a' that bothers me more immediately than Lester's using the death of a terminally ill baby to mock the NHS, but in typing that out I snapped at how loving disgusting that is. Worst Obituary Cartoon: a I'd probably wouldn't count 'c' as an obituary rather than a mass shooting cartoon (nor 'd' for that matter), so I guess I'm obliged to vote for something else. Too bad, as Kirschen's effort is a crystallisation of hollow meaningless mourning in political cartoons. I suppose Rose's McCain bit is similarly vapid, but ultimately I have to give with the Peters, because it seems like putting Billy Graham in the role of god is wrong on many levels regardless of where you stand on the man. Worst Caricature: c Difficult. On a technical level, I'm saying Catalino, because he's managed to gently caress up tracing a photo (or rather he did so twenty years ago  ). Rall and Garrison both do their standard stuff, meaning they don't look much like who their meant to. God knows with regard to 'h'. 'f' is still impressively racist in the details for tyool 2018.Worst "A Thing Happened" Cartoon: g 'f' is aggressively mundane, but 'g' is a stupid take on a subject that no one cares about. Not content with KIDS THESE DAYS and SOME GIZMO, it seems to suggest that these are directly related to Sears' bankruptcy. Worst Label: d That's quite the paper he's got there. Most Incomprehensible f Probably the most 'Nonsense, this is an election year' of the bunch for me. Like, I know what it's about and I'm still baffled by what he's trying to say exactly. It's the question marks that make it. Least Concealed Bigotry (Racism) in a Cartoon: b God, these are all awful. I'm opting for 'b' as it can be easily (i.e. hard not to be) interpreted as Stiglich sticking up for those plucky white supremacists. Least Concealed Bigotry (Islamophobia) in a Cartoon: a People have already gone into detail about the context of this one. So... yeah, gently caress you, Lester. Least Concealed Bigotry (LGBT) in a Cartoon: d I probably find the nazi toons more actively heinous, but it's 'least concealed bigotry' and they couch theirs in 'if-you-know-what-I-mean' poo poo (which is of course why they're worse overall). Of the others, I'd probably put 'd' down as the most overt. Least Concealed Bigotry (Misogyny) in a Cartoon: a It gets to me. I'm not sure who the one he's calling a not just a whore but a treacherous whore is as all of Garrison's sexy-lady-types look the same. (Who was particularly outspoken? Jennifer Lawrence, maybe?) Maybe it's all of them. It'd explain why she's unnamed. This makes the concern trolling all the more hypocritical, railing against those both sexual predators and the women who totes lead them on. There's also the largely unwarranted attack on Meryl Streep, which seemed to be a thing with #metoo cartoons. Of course, Garrison has to go a step further than most and have her be in on it. Ugh, get hosed, Garrison. Compared to this, the others seem positively garden variety. Worst Rape Apologia: c I'd say to see the previous answer, but it ain't here. I'll go for 'c'; its combination of whataboutism and downplaying of offences by his side seems pretty straight apologia stuff. Worst election cartoon: c I'd say "nonsense, this is an election year", but it's an election cartoon... Oh, well, at least we get to see that Garrison classic of not understanding the idioms he uses. Laziest Non-Gorrell Cartoon: i Why this over 'a'? Eh. Most Easily Reinterpreted: b If you had no idea of the cartoonist, I have no idea how you'd know he was against these people (granted, even then I'm not 100% on whether he's trying to contrast the third thing or not). The same is true of 'g', though as I can't really tell exactly what Ramirez is trying to say in the first place (other than THING BAD presumably), I guess that's not quite reinterpretation. 'c' comes close, but it's apparent from McCoy's artwork that he despises these characters. Most Willfully Dense: f Yep, that's what that means, Tinsley. I think this one, because he doesn't know what 'toxic masculinity' is and certainly doesn't care to find out, whereas the others feel to be merely disingenuous in comparison. Worst Gaslighter Cartoon: g This topic feels a bit vague, but Rall does seem to be doing the most active 'hosed up thing is actually totally reasonable' message. Overall Worst Political Cartoon: f Well, obviously, I suppose. The others seem more interesting to discuss (seriously, I hate that second one), but it seems hard to claim them as being worse overall. Best Edit/Parody: d For some reason, this string of edits brings my heart joy.
