Went on another Explore and Draw session, this time at Rochester Cathedral, down in one of the chapels. This was with a sort of water soluble wax crayon, but I think it's a bit of a gimmick medium really. A combination of some really soft pencils and metallic pencils from Derwent, And this one was watercolour with fineliner outlines. The reflections started to make a face, so I sort of tried to lift it out. I like the effect of the water colour, but not end result. Other sketches This is a tiny water colour of a WW2 pillbox that fell down the cliffs. These were from another Explore and Draw, this time in a lightship that's been converted to an art centre. Much prefer these to the cathedral pieces.

It's actually the same paint on all sections, but yeah, you're right about it being wet on dry. I'm using a little Windsor and Newton travel set for these. What happened, was I did the initial sea, then wanted it darker at the back (the sea there has lots of different dark and light areas due to it being an estuary rather than open ocean), so tried to layer darker on top, but obviously didn't get the blending right, same with the middle area. Will try wet on wet next time, and what you said about simplifying shapes.

Decided to try and do Christmas cards this year. Idea is to get it reduced and printed onto cards, then hand finish with colour. It's the SS Richard Montgomery (a sunken ship full of explosives off the coast of the place I live), will be adding Christmas lights and something like, "Celebrate New Year with a Bang!" to the signs. I tried doing light effects in black on the lights that are against the moon, but it didn't work, so I'm now blocking them out again, and will just handle that with colours once it's been shrunk and reproduced.

So I'm really not happy with how the lights are coming out on my ship picture - especially not sure how they're going to work against the moon (though I can practice that via the magic of photocopies), any advice on how to make them work in black and white?

I tried that and it looked too busy. Maybe I'll do tinsel instead of lights.

Spent the afternoon re-arranging bits of my boat picture ready for transfer to lino. There's a tangent on the right I couldn't work around digitally, but might try to fix whilst cutting. Going to do the decorations by hand after printing. Tomorrow lunchtime going to transfer that to the lino then start cutting.

The most noticeable thing to me is the nose; in the photo you see far more of the right side (as you look at her) than the left, but in the picture the nose is square on. There's the same issue with the lips, but it's not quite as obvious. You've done a good job of getting the hair volume across.

We did lino cuts at art society tonight. Ears got a bit messy and confused, and I think the right hand side of the lower muzzle looks better than the left. Stuff like this scares me because once you've cut something away, there's no coming back

Lunchtime still life. Was done with what I assume are student grade caran d'ache pencils (I bought them nearly 20 years ago, they're in a plain blue box with no fancy name). Noticed some colours - e.g the yellows are much waxier than others and harder to layer. I take it professional pencils have a more consistent texture across the colours? Considering getting a FC polychromos set - what would people recommend - I'm thinking the 60, then buying anything extra I want from open order. I did a cheeky doodle of an apple in Hobby Craft today and they were so much nicer than the old caran d'aches I have atm.

I like this, but I don't understand where the light is coming from - best guess is the white speck behind her? If so I'd do something to make it look like an object or spell effect rather than just a bit you forgot to paint over

Are you using those watercolour-pencils where you pencil and then it turns to watercolour, when you add water? Yep, water colour pencils, Caran D'ache supracolours specifically. Lighting in work canteen isn't great, will try to take better ones if I manage to draw something tomorrow. (sadly my lunch tends to be noodles, so no hipster-esque photos of drawings of food)

Been doing some exercises out of a book today, here's the first one that could be considered a finished piece. It's done on some 300gm bockingford paper, using arteza tube watercolours, which seem to be really good for the price (no cadmium red or yellow, but has decent substitutes) My brushes are a total hodgepodge in terms of quality. The only technique I wasn't happy with was splaying a brush to do the thin branches, but I was using one of the cheapest ones for that, which probably didn't help. Also, I need a hair dryer.
