Just skip to Capaldi's third season, I reckon that's when he really finds the Doctor he should always have been playing. The first season trying to push him as this big rear end in a top hat never really rang true to me. He's better in the second season but the Clara-focused drama swallows a lot of his character. When Clara's taken away and he gets some room to breathe with some actually good companions, the Twelve you see in that season just about beats out Nine for my favourite Doctor.

But they aren't all monsters. Evil of the Daleks establishes that, but in a way which suggests that you need "the human factor" to change them (so Daleks are evil only because of the Dalek factor). Then comes the new series and all its redeemable Daleks:
"Dalek,"
Genetically altered itself by using Rose's DNA to regenerate (possibly intended to imply a callback to the human factor).

quote:

"Daleks Take Manhattan,"
Genetically altered itself by becoming a dickhead (same).

quote:

"Journey's End,"
Driven mad and given prophetic powers by an extreme act of Time Fuckery.

quote:

"Into the Dalek,"
Injured and possibly brain damaged, or at least robo-brain damaged, and its "redemption" is just 'oh, my target priorities are now switched'. It's still a genocidal tank, just now it only genocides other genocidal tanks, and sometimes the Doctor apparently.

quote:

"Asylum of the Daleks."
It's a Clara shard, see above re: Time Fuckery, plus it used to be human (human factor again?).

Sherlock is poo poo but there's no need to call people who like it brain damaged. There could be any number of reasons for their incredibly poor taste.

Demons of the Punjab bodes well for this, the Rosa Parks episode definitely does not. If it's more along the lines of the latter, expect to have a great scene where the Doctor explains to an angry companion why they must not change anything or help anyone because it would damage The Web of Time (tm), but later mollifies them by taking them to a star named after Anne Frank.

The Holocaust specifically is a difficult theme to work with in time travel because, of course, the moral choice is to do whatever you can to prevent it. But since even DW at its most revolutionary isn't going to undo the Holocaust (and that would be a terrible move for many reasons, though I'd love to see it explored in a non-serial story), you're going to have to broach the subject of why the Doctor isn't doing anything, and there isn't a satisfactory answer to that question.

Like, this is a theme that would make me nervous in the hands of the best DW writer. But when done by the writer of The Battle of Spotl er Foot
Rayce der Moiner Kirsten av Dunst Rimsky kor Sakov there's no way this isn't a disaster.

After last season I figured I was done with Chibnall's Doctor Who, but this seems like it'll be too horrible to look away.

it's been this long and my first thought about that episode name is still "Orms by gore".

Even at that basic level, it's bizarre and depressing that so many people think the sky is falling because that description got changed from "clever man" to "clever woman".

I also did a rewatch. Episode 5-9 hold up so much better than I remember. The bookends of the season, however, not so much. Which might be why I had a lower opinion of the season when I first watched it. Also, other than "The Tsuranga Conundrum", they were not written by Chibnall. "It Takes You Away" is honestly one of my favorite Doctor Who episodes ever.

I don't remember what happened in either of those. Which was the one with the spiders? I remember the first episode and Ghost Monument, I remember the final episode which my brain still insists was called "The Battle of Orms-by-Gore", I vaguely remember what went on in the Dalek one. The rest of the season is a total blank with spiders in it somewhere.
