I sort of liked the hybrid stuff as it sort of tied in to the plot of Engines of War and, to a lesser degree, Doom Coalition. In Engines of War, the Daleks are planning to turn the Doctor into a Dalek hybrid to help them win the war, something that is prophecied by the Cloister wraiths who first show up there and later in Heaven Sent. In Doom Coalition, the whole end game of the antagonist is to use a clock to calculate a fixed point in time when Gallifrey as a civilization ends, which also ends up happening in Heaven Sent, whether the hybrid is Me or the Doctor it doesn't really matter.

He was a bit wooden in the River Song story he did but it seems like he got used to the format by Day of The Master.
