Yes. You can get random items museum, zoo and botanical garden items. You can also get lots of equipment for trade unions or ship. You also collect a good deal of scrap you can use to craft items at Nate's island.

You can also generate that same scrap passively by asking for it in trade. If you set your Trelawny items to auto-buy scrap then Nate's trading ships will sell scrap to you in 1's and 2's. Sadly you can't do this with arctic scrap and you need to collect that manually.

If you're doing expeditions the maps that trigger diving bell quests also give a decent navigation score bonus.

Why is it that airships sometimes use the docklands/pier/trading post and sometimes 3 of them line up at the airship platform and gently caress up the timing of my trade routes despite the fact I have plenty of the latter options open for them to load/unload at?

From what I can tell with the docking/trading logic, any ship, air or otherwise, will always go to the closest harbour area to where they entered the map, and then pick from whatever ports are available within it. If there's a free port in that harbour they'll go there first, but if they're all full they will queue up, even if there's free ports at other harbour areas. I'm not sure how the airship platform gets treated but my guess is that it's basically its own harbour area so if they would hit it before one of your docks, they'll go there, otherwise they'll go to a dock.

The "fix" is really to start using advanced docks and start setting filters. Or maybe check if there's a mod for it?

It's one of the most infuriating things. It wouldn't be so infuriating if the airfield wasn't so slow, or if mail ships weren't limited to using the airfield

Outside of doing stuff with routes and advanced piers, you need to mess around with items quite a lot. Here's some options for improving loading speed:

Airships

Airship Cargo Loader - bought at Eli/Research Institute
Royal Airship Stamp Mimic - crafted at Old Nate (Arctic)/purchase at Grand Gallery
Dedicated Airship Hoist - crafted at Old Nate (Arctic)/purchase at Grand Gallery
Particularly Pull-y Pulley - crafted at Old Nate (Arctic)

Platform

Airship Logistician [Trade Union] - bought at Eli/Research Institute
Hogarth the Harbourmaster [Harbourmaster's Office] - reward for Cape Trelawney main quest (only one per save)

For mods, these two are available through the in game mod browser, just search by name.

https://mod.io/g/anno-1800/m/arctic-captains
- Adds new captains in the Arctic session as rewards for the main quest, expeditions or purchased at Qumaq.

https://mod.io/g/anno-1800/m/airships-use-ship-items-serp
- Allows airships to use regular ship items. Haven't tried it personally since it appeared yesterday but in theory it would let you hit high loading speeds very easily.

A fishperson in an intimidating hat!

I’ve been using airships only for mail since ships are extremely easy to get and equip compared to airships, and their loading speeds can be buffed by Harbormaster items freeing up their slots for better travel speed items.

It feels like if the intention was for players to move to partly or wholly airmobile cargo, they could have put in more poo poo relating to airmobile cargo. Instead of, say, putting in a system for leaflet drops which I’ve never used even once.

e: vvv why am I paying half an Influence each on cargo bays which never get used, when I could just use a drat boat with purple drive items I’m already mass producing, is the thing.

One trick with airships is to limit them to ~1/2 cargo to get higher overall throughput. They have the largest cargo penalty of all ships and transport less items per minute if you fill them up completely.

Have them sit in your storehouse and largely forget that feature exists.

I mean technically you can use them to give temporary buffs to your islands by doing air drops but it's really too fiddly to be worth it.

the arctic really hit the struggle to survive vibe for me; there’s just never enough space and everybody’s freezing and getting sick. even (or especially) struggled with beach space for seals and whatever the other arctic ocean resource was.

You need Enbesan goods to fill up the scholar houses and the usefulness of the institute scales with scholar population, so you'll be very limited in what you can research and it will be very slow going.

I kind of hate dealing with Enbesa and usually just docklands all that stuff in. IIRC all the scholar needs/wants (or their ingredients) can be traded through the docklands. I would just have one of my production hell islands churning out something like advanced weapons or bicycles to trade for them.

Instead of fitting your fields into all the spare corners on an island, you have to make more corners.

I really like the change to farm fields in theory but in practice it either makes placing enough tiles finicky, or a matter of making a big block with the farmhouse in it and then tiling that like you would when fields were 2x2 or 3x3 or 3x5.

You probably have some weird specialist accidentally making them or there was a Beer Festival or something but for plantains or your brought a fuckton of them over to make dessert for the queen or for a world's fair exhibition or something and forgot about them.

Or at least that's how I always wind up with 500 unexplained plantains.

And why the heck do you only have 500 storage?? Aren't you spamming docklands storage modules and warehouses?!?!

Once I get to serious investor money, like +100k per minute, I just stop paying constant attention to their little problems. No goat milk, something's on fire, ADMIRAL ADMIRAL and some farmer island has the plague, whatever man. I just get into this fugue state of moving buildings and decorating for a couple hours. Can't be happy until I've finished some neighborhood built around a huge canal lake complete with an aviary that pushes bird cages up against the food & drink venues and lets guests eat next to fuckin eagles or whatever. See, there's an entirely cosmetic bridge that goes from the cafe to the eagles. Eat an eclair, then go stare at an eagle. Gotta get THAT perfect.

We have a four-person coop save with all DLS currently, with perhaps 40 hours into the save. We're pretty deep in skyscrapers, and just recently built a mega-Armada of battle cruisers and knocked out the prussian moustache 2-star dude, leaving him with like two small islands.
Since we make like 80k a minute, have 60 million in the bank, and all islands are basically built, the game is in a very different phase, actually. Instead of ignoring small problems and being whatever about them, now every person has their focused island groups and works to improve them and optimize. Each trade route gets several passes as to its efficiency, each farm gets a once-over to realign, install fertilizer and tractors, etc, and some farms get moved. It's actually really cool, because the tweaks are burdensome and require planning, but the rewards is not only seeing money go up, which doesn't matter, but seeing the islands essentially revitalize.

With four people playing and building, with 40 hours in the bank, there's a lot of redundancy and waste in the system, and getting rid of it is like its own minigame. It's a lot of fun!

Ketema's questline isn't as long as it seems like - the three island chains are actually completely independent from it and you don't have to do them at all (you just miss out on a bonus item from not having done them before finishing Ketema's chain).

It took me an entire weekend to figure it out but I finally have a solid Pride and Peddlers run going. I'm so used to "Feed resources to population to make money, anything more than than a small overflow is wasteful" that it took 3-4 runs to finally get into the habit of "Make a bunch of extra everything, sell it off! Only stop making something if you have a replacement/more advanced product."

Food only goes so far it seems. On the plus side, Tobacco seems like a juicy winner since it's not actually food. I feel that's balanced because both the cigar and veneer factory require obreros and there's no way to replace them with jornaleros like with coffee. Though the scenario does have the item that makes them take raw lumber instead of veneers which would cut down on obrero need. Normally requiring obreros wouldn't be too much of a problem but if you satisfy the condition of having over 3K for over an hour the scenario just starts cycling between 3 market crash events forever.

Also gently caress you game, I'm not building sewing machines. Those take both steel ingots and aluminum panels. All mineral resources (clay, aluminum, helium, oil, iron, limestone, pigment minerals) are finite. They're only happiness for obreros and only give like 3 populations for artistas.

Oh also Arbitrage Is Good, that's required during said events. Normally the scenario tosses you the occasional market crash which is good to stockpile up on expensive black market goods and then when a positive event comes by you can sell the stuff for massive gains.

I discovered a 'trap' with the bonus production specialists, primarily relevant for the fertiliser and orchard chains.

The chemist that makes fertiliser from Arctic gas works by bonus production of 14 fertiliser per cycle. Sounds great, 15 fertiliser for 1 Arctic gas!
But the 14 bonus units show up in the warehouse, while the 1 ordinary unit show up in the fertiliser works internal buffer...
So when island storage is full, all the bonus production is wasted, and you're suddenly trading 1 Arctic gas for 1 fertiliser until the internal buffer is full at 5 units.

No big deal right? It'll fill up and stop soon enough. But if you're consuming fertiliser on the same island, some silo will request 1 unit from the warehouse, the fertiliser works will dispatch one unit from its buffer to the warehouse, and then work one cycle and waste another 14 units!

And if you're shipping out a lot of small stacks of 50, that takes three cycles to refill (45 from production plus the 5 in the buffer) It'll actually take 8 cycles to refill including the 5 cycles that just go to the internal buffer, wasting 60 units each time!

I suddenly found my Arctic gas supply dwindling fast, but couldn't figure out why until I caught that. So now I make fertiliser on a dedicated islet with no farms, and also make sure to ship out rare full shipments to other islands/maps instead of many small stacks, to make sure the warehouse reaches full as few times as possible.

The same to a lesser extent applies to the orchards if they run on dung, but is less critical there.
