This seems to imply Mykkänen is a grey eminence as opposed to a weathervane who has civil servants draw up pointless ten point action plans (which never contain any more funding for anything) whenever there is anything negative in the news that applies to his fiefdom.

No. 1 Callie Fan posted:That's because Masa was the most archetypal Finnish man. Except they didn't because Orpo wrote a blog post (that he has refused to elaborate on) where he says they want proper care to be defined in a way that is not a strict amount of nurses per patient, i.e. we are back to square one and "ihminen ei ole desimaali." I am enjoying the bright-eyed political journalist takes that "Kokoomus is struggling against giving the impression that they might care more about the profits of private healthcare companies than the welfare of seniors." Perish the thought.

This was always gonna be an interesting poll because they hosed up the sampling last time and got only 2.5% for RKP. The shift there was probably from kepu and Kokoomus.

Berner had already said a few years ago when she was busy tearing everything down that she had no intent of remaining in politics ever again. I wonder if Kokoomus will copycat this and start rotating a bunch hatchetmen in various ministry positions - instead of squamous lawyers skulking into EU politics like Itälä, Katainen and Stubb, these MBAs and business school graduates will gently caress off to the board of the highest-bidding company once they're done. At least Suvi Lindén switched to selling arms to African dictators like a normal politician.

I was wondering who would want to specifically be the magical 100th opponent. There's still time to buy off a small party. Maybe make abortion illegal to get KD on board or do some horse trading with the whole Seinäjoki/Vaasa thing to get RKP.

It's almost as if preparing far-reaching and wide-ranging reform from the premise of two separate boondoggles for two parties means the reform will turn out to be a dysfunctional piece of crap no one likes. Even if it had passed it would have been instantly revised and revamped during the next government. If you sincerely think the system needs long-term reform you need to commit all or almost all political parties to it so that they also own it if it runs into trouble.

10 000 000 tree plantings 10 minutes per tree planting on average works out to roughly 1000 manhours (assuming 1600 p.a.) So you'd need 10 000 people working full-time for over a month; 100 000 people working for 16 hours in the summer (something like 3-5 working days for young people, realistically) I don't have time to look up how many 15-17 year olds we have but that's on the face of it a huge chunk of that group (and many of them have other things they need to do, or physically can't spend 16 hours in a forest planting trees) I wonder if Prime Minister Smart Businessman/Engineer ever did the math.

I have literally never heard of any of these companies. I have no idea how we'll manage without these captains of industry. I also saw the Kokoomus TV ad for the first time and it was funny how obviously "everyone should be able to decide for their own euros" tipped the party off. This after a long spiel about ~communities~ and ~equal opportunity~. I also enjoyed the references to post-war prosperity and stock war footage, all from a time period when Kokoomus was constantly kept out of government. Finally, anyone else notice that Kokoomus ads seem to use all colours of the rainbow except the traditional dark blue? I'm seeing lots of reds and yellows. E.g. Wille Rydman is using a red-white-black scheme and you need to squint to even tell what the party is.

That's true. And it's entirely possible the other lunatic racist parties might peel off enough votes to deny PS the #1 spot and spare us the farce of Halla-aho being coalition negotiator and either 1) not being able to put together a coalition or 2) us ending up with an even more disastrous Perskeko coalition than the previous one

It's the same supporter base they had in 2015 and 2011. The split made things a little muddled, but now with an election campaign and everything, it has coalesced back together for them like T-1000. I am not convinced the sexual harassment or climate stuff has had as much of an impact; they've always been there and never really left. And it's the type of voter that is less likely to even think about the whole thing between elections, hence a surge in polling in the run up to an election. If anything with the split they ended up managing to have their cake and eat it too, by being both in government and in opposition in the same election term. The Greens and LA have tried this same maneuver before, but without as much success - it probably helps that Halla-PS essentially got kicked out rather than opportunistically quitting. Sipilä not re-negotiating a new coalition or triggering a new election after the split will come to haunt Cock, Kepu and the rest of us for many more years. It paralyzed the government's policy-making ability, which in turned helped tank their popularity, and allowed PS to fester in opposition for two years. At least they managed to ruin taxi regulation and education, cut taxes and move hundreds of millions of euros into different slush funds for their troubles. I've thought for about ten years now (my bad for not coming around to this sooner) that we need to burn down valtiovarainministeriö, fire or forcibly retire everyone working there above a certain paygrade, and start over from scratch, but so that the expert organization for preparing the budget is actually a large and well-funded budgetary office in the Parliament. It's a mockery of parliamentarism that the most critical element of daily governance is controlled by a single ministry to such a degree that the Parliament basically has to take their calculations and opinions (opinions, not facts) as a priori when passing a budget. The liikkumavara Parliament has in the budget is less than one percent of the total. I realize that the US is not a great example but it's one I know well: Congress got fed up with fait accompli budget proposals by the White House in the 1970s and set up their own budget office to prepare and examine the budget, and these days the White House budget is mainly treated as an aspirational document or a bad joke, while Congress prepares and passes the actual budget (in theory anyway). How the gently caress does this even work? You're not allowed to call him a Nazi, even though he's being charged with inciting hatred against an ethnic group? If the intent is all that matters, does that mean that if I call someone a Kokoomus voter, that's defamation? Do we need a specific Lex Vehkoo to establish that the truth can't be defamatory? How seriously should we take a prosecutor's office that has been preparing a hate speech charge against someone, and simultaneously prosecuting a defamation case against someone else calling them a Nazi? Irrespective of personal behaviour, if you are a politician and/or you put yourself in the public eye (let's say by being a vocal nazi and a racist), you (should) also enjoy a lowered degree of protection against kunnianloukkaus. But I think so far the standard has only been applied to high level politicians like government ministers or party leaders, maybe MPs, not snowflake city councillors.Hogge Wild posted:

I think the media and pundits falling over themselves to praise Halla-aho is based on a fear of repeating what happened in the US in 2016 where the media class widely beclowned itself by dismissing Trump. What followed was a still-ongoing mission to remedy this by doing repeated interviews and vox pops of the elusive Midwestern Trump voter, which is utterly beside the point and missing the true trends in the background (anti-system, anti-political, anti-elite mindset entwined with white supremacy). I guess they're just trying to avoid feeling embarrassed after the election? Basically, if PS get 15-17 percent in the vote in three elections in a row, that means the question of whether being racist has been adjudicated by the Public and racism is, in fact, now Good. Kinda like how Kokoomus being in nearly every government since 1987 must mean that cut-throat pro-business crony capitalism is also Good.
