Me and my roommate just finished season 5 and now I'm hoping the prequel has young versions of Tony Blundetto, Ralphie, and Jackie Sr. gently caress, if they can find someone who can play a young Robert Loggia, we could get to see Jackie and Tony take down Feech LaMana's poker game, that could be pretty dope.

Christopher's the one who yells that to Scorsese, it's pretty great.

Watching Season 5 and Season 6 back to back, I never noticed the visual callback between AJ's long hair and Tony's long hair when he was around that age (there's a real quick flashback in S5 of Tony and Tony B. when they were kids and both were long haired rockers like AJ).

Me and my roommate were cracking up when we realized both Buster and Gob Bluth showed up in the Sopranos at some point.

And while watching the last episodes of S5, the scene with Carmella and Angie having dinner made me realize the actress who played Angie (Richie's gf who he cheats on with Karen Allen) was Despie in the Wanderers.

The show's pretty brutal in its portrayal of Carmella and her purposeful ignorance regarding Adriana's death. She literally dreams about it and the next morning doesn't even give it a second thought while pouring over her blueprints to the building Tony bought her, which was only given to her to do exactly that.

And he did it because Carmela put it into his head that Chris was going to betray him. Sure, he internalized it as saving Chris' daughter, but then had that dream where he laid out exactly why he did it to Melfi. Man, I should finish the rewatch I started awhile ago. Season 5 and 6 is always when I stall out, but there is a lot of good stuff in there.

That's the best dream of the series too because there's no lead up and it catches you off guard how he just casually throws out the "I've murdered friends and family before. My cousin Tony, my friend Pussy..." and then wakes up in a panic because he thought he was blabbing in his sleep.

I think my favorite character is Rosalie Aprile. She never made any excuses for her lifestyle and didn't try to rationalize what happened to Jackie Sr or Jackie Jr. Since she doesn't internalize her grief, she doesn't live in misery like Carm.

Plus she has some really funny moments, like when she's talking to Adriana (who's talking with the Feds) about Pussy and Judas.

That poo poo is funny, but goddamn what a brutal scene. Tony even makes poor Patsy kiss the ring later on in the episode and forces him to say "I put my loss behind me" so Tony could fee better about having his twin brother clipped.

I like that by the end of the show, Patsy gets a little bit of revenge by reveling in the fact that his son's going to probably marry Meadow.

Something that I didn't quite pick up on so much when I watched this when I was younger is just how grossly socially inept so many characters in the mob are. It's seen most clearly so far when Mikey is talking about the tailor's grandson's death in graphic detail while the man is standing right in front of him. I guess it reinforces that these people are complete sociopaths with no capacity for empathy.

I have to say that it has really surprised me how much of this kind of thing was missed on me when I first watched this. I suppose I was younger and more interested in the superficial aspects of the story. At times though it has almost felt like I am watching a different show. There are still things that I miss, and thanks excellent poster Jerusalem for the episode digests - they really add a lot to this rewatch.

My favorite example of this is after Tony and Christopher rob the bikers. They run out of things to say to each other really quickly and start awkwardly repeating their jokes, it's a brutal revelation on the dynamic of their relationship.

"Wuwuwe're with the Vipers!" is such a great line reading from Tony.

Ralphie was supposed to be a part of the original card game robbery and lamented missing out on his chance at glory. I always felt like he was trying to recapture a little bit of that by mentoring Jackie Jr. He definitely put the seed there on purpose, but in Ralphie's own hosed up frame of thought, he probably thought he was giving Jackie a shot at something he missed out on.

I mean, you can say the same thing about Christopher and Adriana. She's like a 30 and even without his violent outbursts and addiction to narcotics, Chris' unibrow puts him at like a 3, but he's a made guy, who's mob royalty, much like Ralphie. Hell, how the gently caress did Artie's goony bald rear end hold onto Charmaine, or Pussy with Angie? Even when Vito was thinner, he still looked like a chubby little stump of a man, but his wife's a knockout. I think the therapy sessions also helped Tony see the forest from the trees, in that he had no clue where his panic attacks/black outs were coming from, which scared the poo poo out of him. Then of course through therapy, he's able to remember that oh yeah, he blacked out when he was a kid too, and it also turned out his dad suffered from the same affliction (not to mention uncle hercule). If anything, it prepared him for when AJ started having his own panic attacks.

Season 3, Episode 12 - Amour Fou

The same aria that ended the last episode begins this one. Carmela and Meadow have gone to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, following up on Carmela's concern that Meadow wasn't taking advantage of the cultural wonders at her fingertips. Unfortunately for Carmela, despite her period not being due she is spotting and so she has to borrow a tampon from Meadow, putting a slight damper on the day. When she returns, they look over various portraits, Meadow dismissing the subject of one of Reuben's paintings by pointing out she only had her portrait made because she was the wife of somebody rich. For Carmela this probably seems an entirely reasonable thing, but she instead notes that Meadow talks the talk but her current grades aren't reflecting that.

Interesting parallel here with Johnny Sack's wife, who he refers to as Ruebenesque, and their family dynamic in contrast with the Sopranos. Johnny loves his wife unconditionally and never cheats on her, gives his daughter's engagement his blessing and throws a lavish wedding in her honor (as opposed to Tony's issues with all of Meadow's suitors), and openly weeps when taken from his family, something he's immediately mocked for by his fellow mob associates.

While I'm not as conflicted on what the series finale means as I used to be, Tony has to be thinking that even if he made way more money than Junior ever did Junior's current situation is probably his most likely future .

I think the big difference between Tony and his uncle is that Tony has a wife and kids while Junior never married and has no heirs. Tony's a selfish prick, but he's also very protective and loving towards both his children. One of the things I like about the show is how it focuses on the fallout on the family when a mobster dies. Dickie's death influences Christopher from beyond the grave. We see the entitlement of Jackie Jr who always saw himself following in his fathers footsteps. We see what happens to lil Vito after his dad gets it. The very first episode, Tony's talking about how he feels like he came in at the end, because he had to fill his fathers shoes and saw the shifting of the generational guard. The show's very much about legacies and the good/damage they cause. One way or another, Tony's fate is already sealed, as is the legacy he left for his children.
