To be sure. Trevor Something has a weird unpolished quality which makes it kind of endearing to me at least.

let us assume i'm a complete loving moron (this is a very safe assumption to make) and id like to make bleepbloop nerd music, but have basically gently caress all for music experience. i took piano lessons briefly when i was in, uh, 6th grade? i've pretty much forgotten all that

where in the hell do you start? maybe pick up some other instrument first because sitting down to a DAW and some VSTs or whatever feels like getting everything and the kitchen sink thrown at you at once. idk, advice?

Watch the Tom Hulkenberg / Junkie XL introduction to modular synthesis and then hold onto your wallet as tight as you can.

everybody can differentiate a thing that sounds Good versus a thing that sounds Bad. the big paradigm shift that nonlinear, democratized, digital music production has brought to the table is that you no longer require both Musical Talent and Taste to write something worth listening to, but just Taste. it's harder, but definitely not impossible. i can't play drums but i can tell if the fill i programmed is garbo or fire.

I know everyone knows who Carpenter Brut is, but this track they made for a documentary on synthwave (that was never completed because sadly it didn't get enough funding) is a really good track.

you might also like a couple podcasts I listen to:
Super Marcato Bros, two composers talk about game music
Underscore, shares a member with above, focuses on movie scores instead
Art of the Score, a better but less frequent movie score podcast (like half their episodes are john williams scores tho)

Back when I did desktop support at the university I carried a headphone jack in my pocket to every job because I was constantly going through the XP installer and i friggen HATED that song plus it would blast super loud and on some laptops there was nothing you could do to mute it.

Also, I had the windows XP key we used memorized.

Time to get back in the game! Modern trackers can even use whatever obscure VST synth instruments you manage to dig up
