got an audio interface. its cool being able to export midi from ableton and play the synth with it and record it at the same time. makes me see how you could use modular synths etc but control eveyrthing from a laptop whatever

im having fun, but.. I can't help but feel that sooner or later I am going to tire of the monophonic limitations of this synth, and move it on to something that models rather than is anolog but can play chords, at least for the live looping stuff I want to do with it. as much fun as loving around with music at home is, I think recorded music is saturated as with so much talent. live on the other hand, more opportunities, in my head anyway.

as much as I think it'd be good to loop up some background music with a monophonic, I think itd make every song take ages to build up

I saw a dude doing this thing where he live looped with keyboard, drum machine, think he had a bass, and had an electric guitar which was wireless, so he walked thru the crowd playing lead guitar while the rest of his setup ran. entire thing was battery powered, no cables running to to anything including his PA. this was in the middle of the day in town square. it was pretty fuckin cool tbh. probably wouldnt listen to that stuff when alone but to see live was very inspirational. its clearly a thing

as much fun as I’ve had with my synth I’ve realised monophonic just doesn’t cut it for the kind of things I am looking for. gonna sell it unfortunately

but using it as a midi controller for ableton has made me realise how much I do want a controller

the vocation circuit is looking like a deece bit of kit. it’s more of a solo groove box which would be excellent as drum machine and also kids would have tons of fun, but novation products look really good and have tons of flexibility so can work as a midi controller anyway 🤔 idk what will work but it seems loving cool

for the time being using it as a controller with laptop with ableton is gonna give lots of flex but would rather go laptopless

I rarely play my electric guitars or basses because it's too much trouble to mess with the wires. Having to log into windows just to play with synth/keys hurts my spontaneity even moreso.

but wouldnt need to "log into" windows

who logs into windows???

but lol at not playing an electric guitar coz of wires. electric guitar is the most badass of all the things

oh, the circuit can operate 100% independent of anything else, which appeals. but I wanted to make sure whatever I was looking at had the ability to control ableton, but anything that makes midi can do that really

also the key bit about synths and Live is that you got to record and build upon loops, once you get the hang of it then even a monophonic synth is not limiting you really.

are you talking about prerecorded stuff or live music ?

pre recorded yeah not a problem (outside of awkward way to bounce tracks)

like I wanna be able to play with some soft pads live

I fuckin love the bass station 2 tho: such a powerful synth for the size

biggest decision is whether pride or the image In going for in my mind allows for me to use a laptop with Live while playing live or not. because then I could use any midi keyboard and play any sound really. if not, i’d be relying on looping pedal and drum machine. gently caress in writing this I’ve just realised how incompatible a drum machine and a live looping pedal would be (at least an inexpensive one that can’t take a midi tempo input) :/

I have this pie in the sky idea of what I want to do, but it may be so unpossible

circuit isn’t great for clip launching but works well enough in ableton otherwise especially if you like endless encoders

what do you mean “endless encoders”?

I was kinda thinking about that as a side use anyway

live music, like building up a track loop by loop

and you can always use your synth as polyphonic MIDI controller (meaning more notes than just one) with any number of VSTs or built in ableton live instruments

endless encoders means that you can just keep turning the knob forever in one direction - it's computing the value digitally so there is no restriction to a real world thing (i.e. how a guitar tone knob can only go so much)

actually, sorry for barging in on your thoughts like this, i dont really know whats your situation gear wise and what you even want to be able to do with music stuff

no I appreciate the input, so thankyou

I did have the idea of building up loop by loop for sure, but was wary of ending up with every song taking forever to get anywhere, know what I mean? for single songs absolutely. idea still appeals

getting a novation circuit 😳 hopefully works in with everything else

ableton doesn’t actually have a “looping” function does it? where it continually adds to itself? I tried it and had to record to different columns for each one then play back at same time..?

I fear I am approaching this with incompatible methods, although perhaps that just means:

some songs will be looper based (and so drum machine can only contribute sounds not act as ryhtym),

or use the novation circuit to drive the rhythm, and just play with it and over top of it, and not use loop pedal,

unless I feed it into ableton (now I require a laptop) because i’m confident te circuit with midi can control (or be controlled) midi wise for tempo, and try to work out how to get ableton working with loops etc

i’m an idiot and when got kontrol as usb sound interface and only got the one input, should have gotten more 🥺:qq:

I got a Novation Circuit. It’s very fun. Will prob have to move the Bass Station II on, a shame because it sounds amazing but can’t afford to have a monosynth without a lot
of purpose. I connected it to the Circuit and used the circuit sequencer to drive the bass station and it sounds very good indeed..

Need to fiddle with the synths in the circuit to get some basic analog like sounds coz the built in patches are dumb

good tip thanks. I reckon I can do that without ableton too

in fact, just tried an echo pedal. works well.

definitely room for these two in my setup. still might have to sell one :supaburn:

I think my live poo poo will be poo poo without an instrument like the BS2, because it’s something I can play at the time, rather than hit the pads like a moron. Plus overall it’s a better subtractive analog synth (although the synth engine in the Circuit has modulation matrices and isn’t just a subtractive analog synth) for making sick bass sounds

In some songs it’ll be the filthy bass driver and in others the expressive machine
