🚣RowboatMan: ❄️Freezing time🕰️ is an old P.I. 🥧trick...

OutOfPrint posted:

I just released a new synthpop/punk/new wave EP about the ongoing global pandemic everyone forgot: https://faustbot.bandcamp.com/album/the-covid-ep

Unlike previous releases, I completely eschewed guitars and focused entirely on programmed instruments. Covid knocked me out completely for two weeks to the point I couldn't play a live instrument, so I used that as a restriction.

Song topics all loop back to covid, but range from personal experience, informative, and fictional narratives, with my wife calling Sneak a Peek in particular, "loving gross."

It's available now at the Bandcamp link above, and will be streaming as soon as those services decide to take it live.

Christ, as someone who recently got covid after trying my hardest to avoid it these past few years, that first track hit me hard. That's exactly my situation. Exactly. Everything.

I appreciate that I'm not alone in the realization that it's not over just because everyone's over it.

This is a weird aftereffect of a band that broke up earlier this year, but we ended up with two demos we paid a professional studio to record. And I took one of the songs and combining my sudden and inexplicable interest in drawing and "animating" thru the free software Krita, made a video?

It's terrible but it's kinda funny I did this. I haven't really shared it, just keeping it in my youtube movies until I suddenly thought of it today. Based on true story! It's also my first foray in singing rather than just playing bass.

I also posted this in the industrial thread, but I figured it's worth posting here as well. I just released my new EP, WASURENAKATTA, which is kind of an appetizer while I get my second CD situation sorted out.

And yes, it has a manga style cover because I asked Bing "what kind of images do you think of when you hear 'Wasurenakatta?'"

Thanks, this was interesting. I've recently decided I should video EVERYTHING i write. But trying to come up with simple ways to do it is mind-boggling. Haven't tried this method yet!

So, I don't know how many of you all have ever used a service like Distrokid, but I pulled the trigger on it last month and while I'm not making money or anything, I kind of find it surreal that my stuff is on Spotify and about a billion other networks and apps I've never even heard of.

I put up two game soundtracks (I have the rights to publish them on my own), an album of odds, ends, and demos, and my little 8-bit-inspired album, Nothing Fancy
I say 'inspired' because a) it doesn't conform to the technical limitations of any old console, possibly making tracker purists mad, and b) I didn't make like 30 minutes of remixed Megaman tunes or anything like that, I tried to write and structure them as if they had lyrics, even though they don't.

Anyway, this isn't an ad for the service or anything, I just found it neat. I'm planning on releasing a poo poo load more music music this year, so paying like $25 for all of it to be uploaded everywhere wasn't a bad deal.

I've often wondered what would happen if I put some of my music up on Spotify or TikTok, but I've never used either of these platforms ever.

I upload my stuff to Youtube, Soundcloud, and Alonetone, and I'm uncomfortable with doing promotion because I feel like my music really needs to be discovered by complete accident to be heard the way the artist intended, since that's basically how it came into existence. :D

Lately, I've been pumping out tracks without much thought, sort of like journaling but with whatever musical equipment I happen to feel like firing up at the time. That results in stuff like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7SioQ0Iis4 and https://soundcloud.com/the_door_is_scary/02-08-2024a.

I've been using DistroKid since 2018, and yeah, it's still kinda surreal to me that my music is out on streaming services and that I can see artist data like where people listen to my music. It's in a lot of countries where I don't know anyone, so it's very cool that my stuff has spread there.

Not many. Between the data I see from Spotify and Apple Music, I think I average between 10-20 monthly listeners, but I'm also a solo artist who doesn't play shows and I have no idea how to market my music beyond posting it to social media and like I'll usually post it here too. Still, it's worth it to me to have all my releases on streaming services. If I recall correctly, Spotify has included my stuff in similar artists' radio stations, so that might be where I'm getting a few of my listeners from.

Oh shi...

I have absolutely no idea how to promote my music. As a solo artist who played every instrument in the studio, I won’t be playing anything live possibly ever, but I still very much want to get it out there.

When you put it through Distrokid (or other services, probably), they upload it to social media sites, so you can go and make one of those FB, Instagram, Tiktok videos and type in 'Robot Cousin' and my stuff comes up to be used for background audio. I think even one of my albums made it to Snapchat. I say 'one' because Snapchat you have to specifically click on that option to include it there which causes an extra validation of "Are you SURE you own the rights to what you're uploading?!", which you just click through, if you do. I think I only remembered to do that for one album. I'm not broken up about it.

Oh, also, I even have a cover song on there from Zelda 2 (final track of Ironic Jargon), and I had to put down the original artist so that Distrokid could properly send out the right royalties to them.

Oddly enough, Koji Kondo did NOT write the Zelda 2 music.

One of the wild things about being on Spotify is that sometimes someone will add you to a list or blog post or podcast and suddenly your # monthly listeners goes up and you have no idea why. On a couple of days in (IIRC) April of last year something happened that drove my monthly listeners from about 5-600 in an average month to 14-1500. The even weirder thing is that it's never gone back down, I still get about that many people every month. I have no idea what happened but I'm very happy about it.

Even stranger is the end of the year Spotify Wrapped stuff, where it turns out that I was maybe a half dozen people's most listened-to artist for the entire year. I don't know who these absolute weirdos are but that's about the nicest completely unintended and anonymous compliment I have ever received.

I remember getting bumped up to 6000 listens of a track out of nowhere and then my then singer said he just asked a playlist to add us. I mean that's how it works. Another person I know got more than 50k listens of a song that's only alright because she's a software engineer and knows someone at spotify lol.
