I make lo-fi rock and rock-adjacent music.

I'm really happy with how this jam turned out!

Most of the stuff on my channel I'm pretty happy with, but there's an audible learning curve of me slowly figuring out how to use my limited gear to get good sounds.

New track Thursday!

https://soundcloud.com/overnightmike/departure

I got bored and hooked up a ten year old computer to my 1988 Lowrey Heritage organ's MIDI output and downloaded a bunch of free synth VSTs.

Then I listened to Neu! for a week.

The person who made the dexed DX7 emulator is as talented as they are generous.

Finished another new track today. It's got a snappy tempo and some very cool usage of a sequencer and synth sound in a mostly "acoustic" setting.

I'm writing entirely on the keyboard these days, and its helping me make some choices I wouldn't make with a guitar.

I've got a few more cool things ready for recording if I could find more time!

Finally had time to get into the basement and record a new track. I apparently can't make anything short or simple anymore, this drat thing is ten minutes of... electric alt-country?

I have absolutely no idea how to mix or EQ or anything, and am going off of what feels right. The problem is that this does the job when I have a 4 track song, with bass, drums, and 2 guitars, but this thing had 21 tracks and it feels like its too... big?

Anyway, y'all are great, thanks for enjoying my hobby with me!

Yeah, it does get super awesome towards the end... I like! Maaaaaybe crank up the amplitude a little before that? That's my only criticism, it was way low in the beginning and if I wasn't just casually listening I may have turned it off before that. Not trying to be harsh, just trying to help you get folks to stick around until the end! (I'm all too familiar with looking at my Bandcamp stats and seeing the "unfinished plays" lists. :( )

Thank you for listening!

I think you're right, I've gone through my usual routine of listening to my mixdown in a few different settings and it does need to come up a bit in the beginning.

Most of my recordings this year have been a fun way of learning how to get my sound into the computer. I have very little modern equipment, and I love the discovery process as I become more comfortable with some unconventional recording methods (lowrey organ with midi out run to a 10 year old desktop pc running a vst run to a vintage tube amp mic'ed live in the room run through a mixer and into the recording computer) .This song, like most of what I play, was arranged on the fly as it was recorded, and the deep groove of the ending was added a day after the quiet beginning. My intention is that these tracks can serve as demos and rough drafts for a more serious re-record this summer after my seasonal work dries up. I love any feedback, but especially constructive feedback like yours!

I got a new guitar and recorded a short(er) song with it! There's going to be a learning curve going from a light, single coil semi hollow guitar to a 1980 Peavey T-60 but I'm finding a few nice sounds in week 1.

The main progression of this track has a fall from the octave to the maj7 on both the root and the IV and although I want to use that to create tension I think there's too much happening in the track to really get the point across.

As I go along I feel like I'm moving more and more towards my own "sound." I'm challenging myself to rely on my playing to express mood and tone, instead of dialing up a new effects setting or a new VST every time I record a new song.

Thank you for listening!

Also, I re-mixed last weeks track to make the intro louder:

I'm late but here's my three favorite tracks:

White Shoes in Sharp Lights- https://soundcloud.com/overnightmike/white-shoes-in-sharp-lights

This jam has some great guitar tone and is definitely some of my best playing on all of my main instruments. The drums have a bounce to them that I love. It took a great many takes to get them right.

Climb, Climb- https://soundcloud.com/overnightmike/climb-climb

Self indulgent psych jam. Some of the playing and recording lacks polish, but at its core is an idea that I love, a simple jam on a cool scale that builds through four different phases that have trade off each other. If you give up after the guitar solo its ok, so did I.

Live a Little- https://soundcloud.com/overnightmike/live-a-little

Pure post rock. Lots of good layers and neat sounds. Good dynamics. This thing came together so spontaneously, it feels like I hardly wrote it.

2DCAT that new release is very good!

I'm back with a new track. My writing has become denser and darker as this year has gone on, which makes a fair amount of sense, considering the year has done the same.

Hey Slothful Bong, that new YOUNG JAGUAR track is great work.

Thank you for listening. Hope y'all are safe!

After the odd and apocalyptic vibes of the last recording I wanted to do something different as a palate cleanser, so here's a simple guitar workout with a 90's alt-rock feel.

I've put some tracks up sporadically since the quarantine began and I'm not sure if I've posted here about them. Anyway, I just finished the instruments and preliminary mix for my newest song. I thought I'd throw it up here before I track the vocals (this will take a long time because I am "not good" at singing) to get some input on the mix. Y'all have been helpful with this in the past.

The shuffle pattern I put underneath the instrumental/solo section in the middle is possibly the tastiest little drum thing I've ever recorded. I've never been a subtle player and have always been able to give you a loud, solid beat, but being subtle is a newer skill that I'm still practicing.

Enjoy!

Edit: I have determined that the mix was "bad" and remixed it to be "better."

I've made another track. The main riff just arrived fully formed in my brain. Love it when that happens.

Good luck with DAW chat, I record into Audition and treat it like a tape machine. I was reminicing about my old Tascam 4 track that I sold off a decade or so ago and have discovered that I should not have sold it when I did because they are fetching huge prices nowadays.

This is very good. Its got that Ween energy.

I had two days off so instead of recording the cool, subtle late period Led Zeppelin-ish song I've been writing/playing for a few weeks I recorded a 3-chord jam. Priorities.

I've been working on a full-length release. Its going to be vey good, and the realization of a long-standing goal!

90% of the instruments are recorded and I'm stalled right now as this is a very busy time for my real job. Hoping to have it out by Christmas.

Here's a sample of what's coming (mix isn't final but its close):

I like your sound! It's very full, feels like 125% width

Got my head bobbing and I'm only partway through one track.

I'm trying to think who it reminds me of, because there's a lot of familiarity buttons being pressed. I'll get back to you.

Thank you very much! I wrote most of the material in the fall of 2020 and the winter of 2021 while listening to lots Thee Oh Sees, Mogwai, Hum, and The War on Drugs, but I'm also a maximalist with very primitive equipment and a longtime love for heavier sounds like Melvins and Torche. Here's a picture collage of literally everything I used to make the album:

I'm not a great follower of electronic music but I've had your stuff on for the last hour or so. The sound design is great, ambient yet percussive. I'm also a sucker for atmospheric vocal samples.

Hey, thanks! I appreciate the listen! Cylindricule is actually a duo project between me and fellow goon Kilometers Davis. He supplies most of the beats and synthstruments and I do sample stuff and production, although the lines have blurred as we're working on our upcoming EP (hopefully out on 4/20 like last year's was because lol weed)

Edit: Didn't mean to hit post just then. Anyhow, I thought about it some more and I think your sound kind of reminds me of LCD Soundsystem, especially "Halfway Home" evokes "All My Friends" to me. But your voice is maybe more towards Interpol? There's something to it I can't put my finger on. Even that comparison doesn't seem right.

Anyhow, either way, it sounds really good and full, as I said. If production is all you, as the picture suggests, you did a great job with the sonic space.

I've been getting positive feedback about the production, which is both great and unexpected. I've been posting stuff on my Soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/overnightmike) for about 3 years now and I've made progress through revision, repetition, and trial and error. All of the production was me, except for the vocals on "At A Loss" which my friend Tim Jones did from his home studio. His main project is Loose Roosters https://looseroosters.bandcamp.com/ which is a fantastic roots/country/folkgrass project based in Boone NC.

A lot of the learning process with this album was about using less "per track" effects and using more effects on busses and the full mix. Every time I listen to people talk "real music production" I get lost quick, but if you go back in time a bit "put a microphone in front of a good 35 watt tube amp turn it up and play a good part" was the foundation of rock and roll, so I can't be totally off base. Nobody is talking about the microphones or multiband compressor or center channel extractor they used on "Surfin Bird."

Re: LCD Soundsystem I think I share some of James Murphy's thematic concerns: aging, reckoning, being a bit maudlin, etc. The are musical similarities as well: adding on as opposed to moving from verse to chorus via chord changes, repetitive drumbeats, interplay between parts as opposed to lead/rhythm structures, and a lack of "riffs." One early note I made to myself when planning the album was "no Sabbath riffs."

Got any album recommendations for someone who really liked Music Has the Right to Children but hasn't explored the genre much beyond it?
