The Tank KO didn't do him any favors either. Absolutely shattered his confidence. I've been following Garcia a bit, since he's from my hometown (Victorville). He's got athleticism, a good left hook, but his fundamentals are still terrible. Footwork, leaves his chin up when throwing. I think Haney takes it by decision.

Yeah, the 7th was strange. Garcia is doing better than I thought. He reminds me of Tyron Woodley in MMA, where he also has the neat one trick of a left (well, two with Tyron where he also has wrestling that he will do nothing with on the ground), but its a neat trick when it works

the only thing that this ref is penalizing is hitting in the clinch it's amazing. Either guy is just flagrantly ignoring instructions, even, or just committing every foul in the book, and he's like "at's fine np."

Footwork, leaves his chin up when throwing. ^ he should fix this stuff, op. he's tough but he takes too many punches; haney underestimated garcia because he's a Literal Crazy Person i don't want to take too much from garcia because he completely and thoroughly dominated haney but he has serious holes defensively and he has to eat punches just to get in with his (admittedly fantastic) left hook. a more powerful boxer (or even a more prepared one) is going to be able to take advantage of that

he would have been punished heavily for that very bad philly shell against someone that wasn't shook by the first punch of the fight. when asked what he was doing with it he said i have adhd and get bored. ryan garcia with a canelo mindset is a 4 division champ.

I think it confused the ref too, because the ref told Haney to stop hitting Ryan in the back the first few times Ryan did it. Haney might have underestimated Ryan, but I don’t think he came in unprepared. He’s too disciplined for that. I also think Haney took control after that first round, winning most of them until the 7th. I could definitely see this fight being a draw with Ryan’s point deduction - mostly because Ryan was either conserving energy or he just felt like loving around some rounds, and other rounds Haney really was in control. I do think it’s funny how the announcers after the fight basically were like “well now you’ve won the fight you’ve proven you’re not insane. . .” I was interested in tank v Haney, but now it’s much less likely that that fight ever happens. Ryan v boots could be really interesting. I’m not as high on boots as others, but have got to favor him over King Ry.

(although fwiw with heavyweight boxing being the weird place it is, being a bit fat isn’t inherently a huge detriment. The best version of Ruiz probably isn’t built like AJ, but who knows) Ruiz had a pretty close fight with Joseph Parker before he fought AJ which shows about what his level is imo. Which isn’t too bad, Parker is having something of a career resurgence lately on the back of being a pretty good heavyweight. Ruiz got the crazy upset over AJ in the boxing feel good story of the year back in 2019, but despite generating a lot of interest in him, this didn’t propel him to the next level. In fact, it seems pretty likely that the extra money from the AJ fights made him more complacent as he showed up to the rematch 15 pounds heavier. He trained with Canelo’s team for a bit too, during which time Reynoso said he lacked dedication and didn’t consistently show up to train. Ruiz lost the rematch against AJ, which a lot of fans put up to him not being in shape, but I think even if he was the best version of himself it would have been next to impossible to catch the version of AJ that showed up that night. AJ looked great, and had no problem looking boring in service of securing the win. He danced around Ruiz all night and Ruiz was too slow to catch him (the extra weight didn’t help but Ruiz was never going to be fleet of feet) I think after seeing the two AJ fights people really fell in love with the idea of a motivated and in shape Ruiz, so there was a lot of interest in seeing him fight more regularly and mix it up with the top of the division. Imo this was a bit of mirage, Ruiz was never going to be a top guy, but he definitely had the opportunity to capitalize on his popularity and failed to do so. For this reason it’s pretty common to see fans lamenting his inactivity and how he’s wasted his career, basically just begging to see more Ruiz fights. I’m personally a bit of a hater just because I think Ruiz has become a bit mythologized and overrated in all of this. We’ve seen him fight since and he didn’t look great against an over the hill Arreola or Ortiz and it’s not like his career before AJ was fantastic either. I’m being harsh here, Ruiz is fine, but he’s not going to make some crazy comeback and he’s not dedicated enough to hang around as a guy who’s pretty good either. Joseph Parker is actually a good example of a fighter with a similar ability level who didn’t get a big break but still managed to play his cards right, stay active and improve his position in the division. I like Parker for doing that, and that’s basically what Ruiz’s fans wanted for him so I can’t hate too much. It is a what it is tho, and Ruiz just has a lot more name value than in ring ability to offer at this point in his career.

To me, Andy Ruiz had the potential of Joseph Parker, more so even maybe, as Andy Ruiz has fast hands and can put together fluid combos - he's a natural fighter - whereas Joseph Parker has very few natural gifts related to boxing other than a good ring IQ, but Parker clearly works his rear end off and maximized his potential, whereas Ruiz very obviously did not. Ruiz could have been a perennial top 5-8~ level guy ala Parker, fully capable of scoring additional "upset" wins against name guys like Wilder, Zhang, etc, but he's clearly a fat lazy guy who never really has to work again based on the Joshua fights, which has exacerbated his fat laziness. Basically he's this era's Kirk Johnson to me, albeit with that one lucky big win that Johnson never accomplished.
