This thread is to discuss arthurian literature, particularly the french arthurian vulage cycle (circle 1200s) because it's hilarious garbage trash.

you want to know EXACTLY how hot lancelot's lancelot was? they WILL tell you, in literally excruciating detail.

Norris Lacey translation circa 1995 (? I think.) The French Arthurian Vulgate cycle was "translated" by Thomas Malory into the Le Morte d'Arthur, which is the foundation for every Arthurian thing you're likely to be familiar with, up to and including

It's true, King Arthur stuff is hilariously poorly written and very gay

A lot of people believe that the majority of original translations had Lancelot just outright as a homosexual, due primarily to the fact that he has several male lovers and only one female lover, who was added later and is generally a huge point of contention.

also, Lancelot is aggressively sex-pest'd by Galehaut (not to be confused with Galehad[/i]) who is hot and loyal and very tall.

this is literally a modern fanfiction trope.

There is nothing gay about Lancelot's gorgeous eyes or what him and Galehaut do in his bedchambers

Imagine a Christian monk hastily scribbling over pages of what was basically medieval gay porn and rewriting all of the characters as VERY GOOD FRIENDS, JUST FRIENDS and you will understand the nature of these books

I like King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, but I ain't readin' that poo poo. My favorite knight is Percival, but mostly because La Nef did a two part album using medieval-inspired music and it's loving beautiful.

Here are tracks from the first album:

What's extra hilarious is that they're SO loving bad, but their badness is largely unchanged up into the present day, where I'm pretty sure the core cast of Supernatural have re-experienced these events in the glorious world of fanfiction literally tens of thousands of times

It's like 5 pages you whiner. The whole drat thing is like 800 or some poo poo, which I've read, and so has Blade Runner, which sort of gives this thread a hugely privileged position being able to ask people about this obscure piece of crap.

This stuff is all just like immensely prolix, so her explanations are pretty much on the money in terms of what's there

Still, it's mostly just the amusing juxtaposition between the story everyone remembers as fancy British Conan the Barbarian actually being about a bunch of gay men wandering around and getting into drunken idiocy

Drop that garbage and :getgud: by reading the Mabinogi.

I took a couple of semesters of Medieval Welsh in grad school for a few reasons and that was of course our text. It's like some weird slapped-together syncretic folklore/Arthurian fanfic. If you haven't read it, I would guess you'd like it -- even though it's like 79% less homoerotic than what you've posted, it makes up for it by being batshit insane, in good ways. (And thanks for doing so; I've never looked at the French texts, it's a gap in my Arthuria, and now I'll close it as soon as I can track down a copy.)

The French stuff really is a massive influence on Arthurian lore in general, and is probably the biggest contributor to the modern 'perception' of King Arthur and his knights.

Yeah, these translations are crazy expensive. I read them ages ago at my library in college, and I don't have a personal copy now, sadly; even past the cost, I just don't really have the room for bookcases in my NYC apartment.

It's important to understand how much of an idiot Lancelot is by the way, especially in the context of him being like the platonic ideal of Knighthood in people's heads from when they're in grade school

The man doesn't understand that horses need food or sleep, like he travels on one for three days straight until it loving drops dead, then Gawain gives him a new horse and he just travels on that one for four days until it dies

Then Gawain refuses to give him another horse so he just hitches a ride in the back of a garbage truck

Im mostly posting here to do two things:

1) be the first person in the thread to write Le Petite Morte d'Arthur
2) these books are so so very gay that an interpretation of the grail quest is a bunch of gay dudes trying to become straight which is why none of them succeed and the guardian of the grail is both unhappy and genitally mutilated.
