When we visit other cities for breaks, we never get public transport unless it's absolutely unavoidable. Sure you can just get bus/subway/uber from hotel to museum to nice restaurant, but walking everywhere you see all sorts of interesting stuff. When we went to Berlin, we walked something like 28 miles in two days, because we wanted to go to a few places that weren't exactly near each other - but on the way we saw all sorts of interesting stuff, stopped for drinks in places we otherwise wouldn't have passed. I imagine it's more difficult in cities that are built around driving, but in Europe it's definitely the way to do it.
