No idea if a timed console exclusive would qualify Team Cherry as a "development partner" but I'm going to baselessly speculate we get a Silksong release date in this

Just more reading of tea leaves, but Hollow Knight's the free PS+ game this month. Wouldn't be surprised if they saw it as good promotion for the sequel which will definitely be out next month

i mean, yeah, but a surprise release for a game that was already out on another platform is something more expected than a surprise release of an unreleased game we've had no notable news on for like a year

Yes, which is why that seems unlikely

Team Cherry doesn't really seem to do marketing pushes, which is kind of nice. I'm guessing this is probably it for a while, and is basically the replacement for the holiday update they made last year

Jokes aside, why do people assume that a Nintendo direct would have details of Silksong, anyway? I know a switch version is planned but it's coming out (lol) on PC too, right? Why would it be announced by Nintendo as opposed to just announced by Team Cherry themselves whenever they have something?

They announced Silksong's existence in a Nintendo Direct

This is honestly how I wish every studio handled games. Be upfront with people about what you’re working on, then quiet down and work on it until it’s done. Then I play it

They made massive personal bets on the first game, it turned out to be an insane critical and financial success, and they don't have any bosses to answer to. They've earned a more leisurely cycle on this one

I think it's reasonable to be at least a little concerned at this point. Following up a big presentation featuring what looks like fairly finished gameplay with three years of radio silence is generally a bad sign in game development. Yes, covid, yes, they are morally within their rights to take a decade off in the Bahamas and finish up silksong in 2030, etc, etc, nobody is mad at Team Cherry. But, I mean - would they have a big presentation at Treehouse (where they say it's "coming soon!") if they knew the game was four years out?

At least partially because Silksong was promised to Kickstarter backers, and they'd otherwise just be fielding non-stop questions about when something was going to be announced

If they didn’t announce it people would just be screaming at them to announce it. They’re an abnormally small team, it’s probably going to be another giant game, they’re releasing four skus at once, and they don’t have a publisher breathing down their necks. I don’t think they give a poo poo about some metanarrative around the game’s development either nor should they

Most people aren’t completists so having a big world full of nooks and crannies just makes it feel alive in a way that separates Hollow Knight from almost every other game. The first HK really only feels long if you’re trying to 100% and even then I think most people are greedy little pigs who want more

I mean not really. There are 83 pages here but 70 of them are people getting increasingly annoyed and frustrated at the lack of communication and it has become so synonymous with the game that industry stuff jokes about it. It also means that people are building themselves up to likely unrealistic expectations in terms of quality. (Not that the game will be bad but that the lack of communication means people are left to fill in the gaps themselves, which would lead to disappointment if it ends up being 'only' as good as Hollow Knight.)

That would be the case no matter what
