:siren:NEXT STREAM PLANNED FOR: Jan 11th, 12:00PM PST:siren:
https://www.twitch.tv/kaubocks

I absolutely adore retro games. I fully understand and in most cases agree that modern games are just better; we've learned a lot about making games over the years and we're capable of so much more! But there's something about retro games gives me the warm fuzzies that I just can't deny.

When I think about retro games, it's always Nintendo; never Sega, never Sony. I'm a Nintendo boy through and through. It can't be helped. The first games I remember playing were on the family NES, I would run home from school to play Super Mario World on our new SNES, and when we finally bought an N64 they let me set it up in my room! My bedroom!! I sneaked my Game Boy and Game Boy Color to school to trade Pokémon in the schoolyard, and the Game Boy Advance was the first video game platform I bought solely with my own money.

I didn't own a lot of games, though, and my parents were none too happy about how badly I wanted to play them all the time. I wasn't allowed to play games on weekdays due to school, but I was allowed to read about them. Through my early teens I had a decent chunk of Nintendo Power magazines that I'd read cover to cover; looking at the video games that I couldn't afford and wouldn't be able to play most of the time even if I could. It's easy to say they were glorified advertisements for their own system-- of course they were! But they were still so much fun for me to read, and I'm dying to revisit them.

Nintendo Power Quest is a series of streams where I'll be picking an issue of Nintendo Power, reading it, and playing any game that piques our interest. Maybe it's something I looked at as a kid and wanted to play but never could! Maybe it's an old favorite that we'd all love to talk about! Maybe it's just something we thought looked hilarious! For whatever the reason, these videos will be chill background reading with smooth video game jams interspersed with fun looks at retro games.

Due to the length of the streams and how much work they can be, I'm aiming to stream at least every other Saturday with the archive uploaded to my YouTube channel by the next day. If I decide I can do another stream earlier than that, I will update the thread as soon as possible. As with my other stream-related videos, all YouTube uploads will be included with the Twitch chat available as Closed Captioning so you have the choice of turning it on or off. I'm hoping to use this thread as a springboard for any discussion that couldn't be had in a chat format. Did you see a game that you know has a cool LP available for it? Link it! Did we read about a game that you loved as a kid? Tell us about it!

Let's cozy up on the couch and read about games~

...It's the thought that counts, right?
So...your first issue was #143. Seems a bit of a late-start, but I don't remember exactly when they stopped printing. Are you only going up from there, or will you be bouncing back to earlier issues too?

I've got lots of memories from all the issues I had. I always loved their detailed looks at games, mapping out entire levels, pinpointing powerups and bonuses.... Without them delivering me a big, centerfold map for Metroid 2 I'd probably have forever been lost in that. I'd probably die of nostalgia if you covered any issues I actually own.

Kaubocks
Apr 13, 2011

Good question! I started with issue 143 because, near as I could pin down, it was the first issue I can remember owning. It was also the issue concerning the launch of the GBA which is one of my favorite Nintendo systems — within the last year I’ve bought an original model GBA modded to have a backlight and have been collecting physical games again. For a pilot stream where I wasn’t sure how it would all work of if I’d continue the series, I wanted to make sure I’d at least cover the issue that mattered most to me personally.

I wasn’t interested in doing a pure chronological series though, so rather than tackle 144 next I jumped to 150 for the second stream. It seemed fitting because, like 143 it covered the launch of a new platform while still being part of the 20-30 span of issues I owned as a teen.

Now that I’ve got a couple streams under my belt and I’m feeling more confident about how the whole thing goes, I definitely plan to hop around and especially to earlier issues. I’m dying to see even older ones covering SNES and even NES games. Also the first 100~ or so issues are more readily archived on the internet than the rest, honestly. Just trying to find issues around the 150 range was a bit of a challenge. Nintendo Power has, I believe, 285 issues total so that puts my starting point pretty firmly in the middle of its lifespan. I’d love to see some of the later issues as well! But for the time being this will definitely be a very 1990s-heavy series.

The issue I’ll be covering next is 114 by request of a friend — the issue coinciding with the release of Ocarina of Time! After that I would not be surprised to see myself jumping back even further to a random double-digit issue. :buddy:

I wonder if the whole banker's box of Nintendo Power magazine (pieces) is still in our garage or attic.

Maybe my parents just tossed the drat things decades ago.

For what it's worth, my first issue was issue 21. Covered Star Tropics (*still* the only Wii game my dad ever played, and still his favorite video game), Magician (which would be one of my favorite NES games if it weren't for the $%#& difficulty), and the NES port of Ultima IV if I recall.

We've seen this kind of thing crop up a couple times in the issues we've looked at so far, weirdly, but only in advertisements. There was one Power Rangers game ad that used screenshots of a 3D game, but the only Nintendo platform is was coming to was Game Boy Color/Advance. There was also an ad for a racing game that was on N64 but the ad featured a PlayStation controller! What the hell! I hope someone got fired for that. :colbert:

Hm. I remember a Shadows of the Empire issue that had four variants-- please don't ask me why and how I remember this, but it was 40% Stormtrooper, 25% Dash Rendar, 25% Boba Fett, and 10% IG-88.

I got a Stormtrooper cover. =/

Snorb

Well, Gall Spaceport was just a slog, the only benefit of playing through enduring which was getting the jetpack. (And depending on how you think of him, shooting the poo poo out of Boba Fett and Slave One.) The Imperial Sewers, on the other hand, was the obligatory Crappy Water Level that every N64-era game had back then.

Yes, even Super Mario 64.

If anything, I'd say they should skip Xizor's Palace and just get right to the Skyhook Battle.

- people care a LOT about manila envelopes
- what does it take to be a game tester?
- Dash Rendar, the true hero behind the scenes
- hot new upcoming N64 titles
- 64DD will create INFINITE RPGs
- Dual Heroes' Gun's funky jams
- Dash Rendar blends so seamlessly into the Star Wars universe you can't even see him
- infinite Whizz
- the best shortcut in Mario Kart 64
- Cruisin' (across) USA in a school bus
- why Donkey Kong Country 3 is my least favorite Donkey Kong

My God, it's full of cat pictures!

I feel lucky, not to mention old; I got in on the ground floor. The first issue had SMB 2 on the cover, and a fold-out map of Legend of Zelda's second Quest with all the hidden stuff marked. Also a full (but very small) map of the two main areas of Metroid. Also some small blurb about this little game coming out in Japan called "Dragon Quest III" or some poo poo like that, it had these weird-looking cartoon characters in it and was probably no big deal.

I wish I had kept my old video game propaganda magazines sometimes.

Put that nostalgia right into my veins.

I eventually pleaded my way into a subscription that I think ran from volume 44 to 67 or 68? Around that time the great whore Internet claimed my soul through the conduit of the PC and we gave the SNES and the stack of Nintendo Power mags to my younger cousins shortly after.

Episode #7: Vol 20

Points of discussion:
- Steve Wozniak's Tetris high scores
- 20 whole pages of Mega Man 3
- more technical information than you'd ever want to know about game paks
- revisiting the first Let's Play ever made
- debugging our way through Dragon Spirit
- deciphering scribbles left behind on Gremlins 2: The New Batch
- the worst version of Dragon's Lair
- Daedalian Opus is a surprisingly quaint puzzle game
- having hooks for hands in Werewolf
- scouring for information about the New Kids on the Block
