Anybody got the gist of the rest of this article? NHL dude dumped a quarter billion dollars on the AAF and now what, he gets to name the teams after his kids or something? Does that much money get them through the season, at least? What does he stand to gain from this, except the excitement of losing a quarter of a billion dollars?

Where did the original people running this think that kind of money would show up from?

(assuming the AAF survives until then), it sounds like Dundon's investment would lead to a Raleigh franchise in 2020~

Ever to conquer, never to yield.

From what I recall, one of the things that they expect to derive value from long-term is the stuff they're doing with their app and the sensors it uses on the field. If they can convince the NFL to use them, it opens up a lot of sports betting options that didn't exist before. That's why MGM Grand is one of the AAF sponsors, they want first crack at that potential action. Right now, they're just using it for their little play-prediction game, but they want to be able to build off of that.

quote:

Investors are so bullish on it that Ebersol said it plans to spend $500 million to $750 million in the next five years to get off the ground. The investors include Silicon Valley venture capitalists and MGM Resorts International, one of the biggest casino companies in the world. To help develop the tech, the league also hired a head engineer who previously worked as a software engineer at Tesla, the electric car maker, and Lockheed Martin, the defense contractor.

This is why the AAF might be here to stay, at least for several years, even though alternative pro football leagues historically have collapsed under the weight of huge costs and the heavy shadow of the NFL. Next year, another new pro football league – the XFL – is also starting the week after the Super Bowl and is getting $500 million in investment runway from its founder, Vince McMahon.

If the investors were lined up to spend $500 million how on Earth did they have trouble making payroll in week 3, somebody screwed something up somewhere

I think the charitable interpretation would be
https://twitter.com/billyarnie/status/1097904208207118338
so in this version the plan all along was that Tom Dundon would buy it and become the chairman but they needed to put together the Minimum Viable Product before he would sign.

I think this all seems fishy though.

You'd think that would be part of the plan. I mean it kind of goes without saying that starting a pro football league will require a lot of seed money and will likely take a significant amount of time before becoming truly profitable. They should've been prepared to operate for one or two full seasons at a loss.

Most likely expenses have far exceeded over-optimistic projections and caused this. That bailout is either gonna be the best or worst investment ever.

Still, this league has every advantage: support from the NFL, billionaire investors, tv deals, positive fan reaction (that game in San Antonio was nuts), gambling partnerships. A lot of people have bought into the AAF, if this attempt fails then maybe a second US pro league just isn't meant to be.

There's a lot to like about the AAF. How few commercials there are, the faster pace of play, QBs and replay officials being mic'd up, the no-kickoff... I really hope the Alliance lasts long enough for the NFL and NCAA to steal some of these ideas.

The main reason the commercials are so few is because it isn't established yet. I imagine those commercial breaks will steadily grow in length and frequency, hopefully not too fast

Like someone mentioned they are pushing that app extremely hard, it looks like a big part of their business plan. Personally nothing gets me less excited than the prospect of searching for "easter eggs" inside of a commercial app. Easter eggs is the dumbest nerd poo poo
