Woohoo, Crest Magic! One thing that this helps Covenant over SH1 is that characters are a lot more customizable-they have a basic skillset unique to them that acts as a solid base, and then you can use Crest Magic to fill in gaps or specialize. For example, for endgame, I had Gepetto outfitted with the strongest magic for full-out offense, while Blanca was a switch hitter who could heal, buff, and attack physically or magically.

Minor note: Soul Charge (the mechanic where you spend Soul to increase a Fusion's stats) isn't linked to every individual Fusion (with the exception of special endgame ones) but instead to the elemental families. So, if we were to level up Karyl to Level 3, and then unlock the second tier Fire Fusion, they would also be Level 3.

Another gameplay note: In Covenant, Yuri's Fusions 'cost' for SP are actually a per-turn cost, instead of the first game's up-front ones. So, instead of a big Sanity cost for transforming up front, Yuri just burns through SP faster transformed. This actually has the benefit of allowing Yuri to switch between Fusions on the fly for tactical reasons (aided by the fact that he can now, you know, go from one Fusion while already fused), which is nice, and opens up some interesting strategies later on.

I mean, it always felt like Shadow Hearts was going for a kind of 'anime pulp' kind of feel, and this is definitely a step above the classic pulp 'nude woman chained to pillar/rock for sacrifice', but that's not saying much. Anyway, still, Karin is a very good party member. I mentioned before I had Yuri as an adaptable physical attacker, Gepetto as a powerful spellcaster and Blanca as a switch hitter/support. I built Karin as an offensive support: Buff the party and then go on the offensive herself with her sword skills.

)) is that they were both completely worthless as characters and have pretty much zero plot relevance. As in, you could remove them entirely from the game and you'd lose absolutely nothing from the story. That's a pretty sad state of affairs for the characters who are supposedly the main protags.

Ah, Nox, or as I called it, Yuri after listening to The Black Parade. Vastitas is pretty cool, I like the rock armor. Malakia is kind of ehhh. Amnis is probably my favorite, I like the draconic look of it.

Everyone in Covenant is at least usable. For me, my final party was Yuri/Karin/Joachim/8th (who is a lot better than most people seem to give them credit for), but Blanca, 6, 7, and Gepetto were rotated in and out as I saw fit, and all of them got some good time to shine.

I've never understood why Japan has such a fascination with weird, strange outfits with random buttons and odd colors and zippers. The JRPG with the most sensible clothing I can remember is The World Ends With You, and that's because it's set in modern-day Japan.
