The Pulse Rifles props were built on Thompson submachine guns. The under-barrel grenade launchers were Remington 870 shotguns with SPAS-12 parts added on. The original props were brown, but set lighting made them look green. The green color was later adopted as the official color

Speaking of Alien 3, Dark Horse is putting out an adaptation of William Gibson's script for Alien 3. It's a mix of Alien and a cold war thriller, as there's back-and-forth politicking between the corporation and space communists over the fate of the Sulaco and her survivors. Both sides try to clone aliens from tissue samples, both to horrific results

Donovan Trip posted:I don't think it's called Newts tale anymore as it conflicted with Alien 3, they renamed characters in it and rereleased it as (I believe) as an anthology called alien 1-6. No, no. Those were the original run of "sequel" comics. They were rebranded several times after Alien 3, but Newt's Tale was never changed since it all takes place before and during the film. Outbreak, Nightmare Asylum, and Female War were the rebranded story arcs. Really, the only thing they changed was added color to the black/white issues and renamed problem characters (Hicks to Wilkes and Newt to Billie). Definitely reccomend Nightmare Asylum the art and coloring is beautiful.

The suit was referred to as MAX if I recall. They used it in one of my favorite comics as a kid, Aliens: Berserker. The plot was about a group of convict troops who earn time off sentence by clearing Xeno nests. Their modus operandi was for one guy with a facehugger-proof helmet get nabbed and taken to the hive. They then lock onto his tracker signal and set their MAX unit loose in that general direction. The rest of the troops come in for clean up and recovering MAX and the bait. It had some cool as poo poo cover art too!

Picked up that Alien RPG that came out relatively recently. Seems fun. People who wrote it are super fans. It regularly references and name drops things outside the films, from the Dark Horse comics to the Kenner toy line. I like these Aliens.

I just read issue #1 of Marvel's Alien. This comic loving sucks. The plot is fine, but the art is so loving atrocious. Every thing is loving ugly, from the people, to the tech, the backgrounds, to the aliens... At least when the aliens are drawn. There's a big two page splash (which features the previously discussed giger art lady and nearly all the Aliens are traced from other art, stills, and literal action figures. I even held up my own NECA Big Chap just to make sure I wasn't going crazy. There's also this loving awful scene of SPOILERS a dream sequence in which a body armor clad person (identified as female) is cocooned upside down, arms behind her back like it's BDSM fetish art. She's facehugged, but there's also a pair of facehuggers grabbing onto her crotch and her rear end. Dream sequence be damned it's the dumbest thing they could have put in the first issue of a major Sci-Fi's franchise arrival to Marvel. Cool head explosion though. And there's a good cat. It survives (I think). *Edit* Sentinel Red posted:Here's a double page with the head of the 'family': This is the picture. Also, look next to the blatantly an action figure alien. After a brief bit of googling, I have come to discover that the artist, Salvador Larocca, just drew himself for the protagonist. He apparently also did the same thing for an antagonist in the Marvel Star Wars comics. -The Artist -A sketch of himself -Star wars character Cylo -Alien protagonist Gabriel Cruz

In the back on the far left is the only ridge headed, Aliens-style warrior. I'm guessing it's traced from a NECA figure as well, given the weird thinness on it's elbow and wrist that look like articulation points. Also look along the bottom directly in the middle; there's an alien drone in a completely different art style that's being obscured by the photoshopped/traced aliens. What the gently caress is going on with this?

Just read issue 2 of the Marvel Alien comic. I don't like it. The characters are awful, the art continues to be bad, and part of the plot makes no sense to me. Spoilers for Issue 2: So the artist's self-insert is chewed out for letting his son steal his (still active despite being retired) security card. He's told to go up and retrieve a sample before they scuttle the station as it's gone to poo poo. He asks for a team of synthetics, but the corporate dude is like, "Nah, you hosed up and you're getting just two "operatives." Even if the mission is mostly punitive, if this sample is important enough to be retrieved in the midst of an infestation, why aren't they committing more than just three people? Also the protagonist is made fun of for being old, despite being built like a brick shithouse. This comic is bad.

Sjs00 posted:So what is being done gamewise with the stat blocks in the rest of that book released? I am considering buying it if I can run seriously crazy tank battles versus specific breeds of xenos, and if there is associated art or is it all text blocks So the entire book is geared up for running a campaign for Colonial Marines. It has a story driven campaign that weaves a narrative across multiple worlds, dealing with everything from drat dirty space commies, to Engineer ruins, to secret off-the-book black ops facilities. It also has random tables and more bare bones scenarios to help create your own custom campaign, as well as notes on how to file the serial numbers of the story campaign for your own use. Equipment wise, it gives stat blocks for new small arms, heavy ordinance, and vehicles (including tanks!) for both the USCMC and their equivalents in the 3WE, UPP, and ICSC. Same for starships, with some new information for Connestoga-class ships and new ships entirely for both the UA and UPP. Special appearance by the same ship class as the Betty from Alien Resurrection. There is new art for a chunk of the new equipment, but not all of it. Same with the ships, though the few that don't get art are likely not the kind you'll end up having players use. There are new talents and starting classes (or Military Occupational Specialties) for Marine players. Things like medics, vehicle specialists, et. There isn't much new as far as Xenos go. There's a new bio-engineered drone that has a built in expiration date and can't produce queens they sometimes survive the kill switch and they still reproduce through ovomorphosis. There's also a gross chestburster mutation that spreads a disease that makes you explode in a gore eruption. Anathema stat blocks if you missed them in Destroyer of Worlds. While xenomorphs and black goo are featured, a lot of the book is about the secret organizations on both sides of a rapidly heating cold war trying to be the first to actually weaponize xenomorphs. Speaking of black goo, this book serves as a continuation of the events of the Destroyer of Worlds book. I'll be curious to see if this meta-plot continues to progress in future books. *EDIT* The Arcturian thing is settled once and for all. Arcturians are all but directly stated to be another Engineer project, look incredibly close to human, and share a lot of our genetics. Also on their planet are the Arcturas, the semi-intelligent cave apes from the old Leading Edge RPG. Mutant Headcrab fucked around with this message at 06:09 on May 16, 2021 |

MrMojok posted:I know this RPG is know for being extremely deadly for PCs, in terms of contact with the aliens. How does the USCMC fare? In a straight up fight, marines can reliably take out up to Stage IV xenomorphs. The big problem is the majority of encounters aren't straight up fights. Xenomorphs move fast, hide great, and tend towards ambush tactics. A dedicated Marine team has more gear and guns than Colonists or Space Truckers, but they ultimately still have to rely on balancing out stress and dice pushes. The real question is how well do players do against other people with guns. COVID has kept me running this game with my group as I intended so I haven't even had a chance to run Destroyer of Worlds and see how gunfights work out. (I just can't get into roll20; I need that physical presence to get into a game, running or playing). Just read Marvel's Alien #3. It's a better issue than the last two, but I still have some gripes. Our protagonist and one of his marines fire multiple pulse rifle rounds into the first alien they encounter and... it doesn't do anything but mildly hurt the alien. There's not even a gratuitous acid splash or anything. This happens multiple times: alien pops up, they shoot at it, it bleeds a tiny little bit, and it runs away. I'm really starting to question if either the artist or author have actually watched the films.
