Even if every artist draws porn there is a spectrum of gross pervness and the Empowered guy is way over there next to people who draw disgusting fetish webcomics.

Empowered has been clawing back from that brink for the last nine volumes. It's definitely not for everyone, but it overcame its origins as somebody's heroines-in-peril bondage commission a long time ago.

Ah stuff it. People make excuses for that garbage all the time and I will never buy it. It's softcore bondage porn, just stop lying to yourselves.

Also, didn't Ditko do some work for a porn comic company?

If you knew Ditko you would know that the answer to that is a categoric "no". He roomed with an artist who did work on porn, and a lot of people extrapolate based on that, but there's no evidence that they did any collaborations.

And if showing a male character being the victim of physical and emotional domestic abuse is MRA poo poo then I don't know-- I guess I just strongly, strongly disagree?

Much like male victims of rape, male victims of spousal abuse get trotted out constantly as an MRA talking point to prove that "both genders do it" or, even more disingenuously, to try and pretend men are more abused in these ways than women are so any woman trying to frame rape or spousal abuse as a feminist issue is actually supporting abuse. That doesn't mean they're not things that really happen, that the victims are invalid or that they shouldn't be discussed, but in certain contexts I can see it being interpreted as a red flag.

Like if you go on imgur or reddit's front page, half the time there's some bullshit about a rape allegation being false or a man being attacked by a woman (usually followed by the man body slamming her through a table, but not always). And the fact that those things might be true and portray actual victims isn't the reason they're popular.

I'm not gonna defend the Clone Saga, but try reading Jacket Avengers if you want to see how much worse a formerly good Marvel comic could have gotten.

I dunno, I can kinda tell what's going on in The Crossing by looking at the images and reading the words. That's more than I can say for most of the Jacket Avengers era. Those comics seriously made me feel like I was having a fever dream. And I mean that in the worst way possible, I'm talking 105 degree fever convinced the ceiling fan is gonna kill you.

I thought Chaos War was kind of dumb for how over the top unstoppable the bad guy was. It wasn't a Thanos thing where he has god powers but you defeat him with a clever trick either, it was pages and pages and pages of the chaos armies killing basically every character you can think of up to and including Satan, and everyone making a big deal of how unstoppable and scary they are. And then no other book even acknowledged it was going on which made it all seem very stupid.

Keep in mind the plan was initially to kill off Peter after revealing he was the clone, which is why they have him acting like a big dickhead. Then after they realized everyone would get Mad, the plan changed to having Peter "retire" from being Spider-man while Ben took over. But then editorial didn't like the idea that there was this backup Spider-man that existed since they felt it undermined the character. So they killed Ben instead.

And then keep in mind the reasoning behind replacing Peter in the first place was that a lot of writers were pissed about the marriage to MJ because it meant they couldn't write Peter as dating around anymore which they were convinced was a completely essential aspect of the character.

Random Stranger posted:

As for the "right" way to roll back the character, I've thought the best solution was the silver age Superman one. Give us a "Whatever Happened to the Man of the Spider" style sendoff where we get a good ending for the version of Peter Parker that we've been following all along, he gets a happy ending, and then the next issue just starts with the version of Spider-Man they want to use. Screw continuity or in-story explanations, just tell the fans, "We want to do something different [ie. exactly the same as when we were kids] with Peter Parker and we're just going to go with it." It's a bit messy and there will always be whiners, but that's the best way to pull off the band-aide.

Marvel has always been against doing that sort of DC-style reboot and I honestly think it's served them well, despite sometimes leading to things like the Clone Saga. There's something to be said for sticking to your continuity even if it gets inconvenient. The desire to roll back the character to what you liked when you were a kid is where the problems originate.

I gotta be honest, if I picked up a book about hunting and cooking dinosaurs and it focused on the gastronomy aspect I'd feel pretty ripped off. Luckily for me, 2000AD's Flesh!, the proper way to do a dinosaur-eating comic(and also the greatest comic ever printed), already exists.

All I remember from the post clone saga pre JMS days was the unceasing attempts to undo the marriage that never went anywhere because the fans loving hated it and every writer kept realizing it was impossible to write a love interest for Peter if MJ is just "maybe dead" instead of divorced or actually dead. Much like the whole clone thing, the editorial attempts to pretend the marriage never happened actively hampered the storytelling in a way that just confronting it would've solved.

Kazuo Koike, manga writer and co-creator of Lone Wolf and Cub, has died. Lone Wolf and Cub probably had nearly as much influence on superhero comics as Watchmen, via Frank Miller and other creators the work inspired.
