“I have known her longer, my smile said. True, you have been inside the circle of her arms, tasted her mouth, felt the warmth of her, and that is something I have never had. But there is a part of her that is only for me. You cannot touch it, no matter how hard you might try. And after she has left you I will still be here, making her laugh. My light shining in her. I will still be here long after she has forgotten your name.” ― Patrick Rothfuss, The Name of the Wind

yeah, so is this one: “I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep. You may have heard of me.” ― Patrick Rothfuss, The Name of the Wind

“You see, women are like fires, like flames. Some women are like candles, bright and friendly. Some are like single sparks, or embers, like fireflies for chasing on summer nights. Some are like campfires, all light and heat for a night and willing to be left after. Some women are like hearthfires, not much to look at but underneath they are all warm red coal that burns a long, long while.” ― Patrick Rothfuss, The Name of the Wind

yeah the mcdonalds metaphor is overused and not that smart. I am of the opinion though that anything hugely popular is almost by definition mediocre. of course there are exceptions, shut up. but referencing how popular something is is hardly a defense for its quality.

what kind of wizard? i'm a half elf dragon wizard who doesn't know his parents but they are actually the Syn and Sion of Shalandracan Citadel and i'll end up being in charge of all magic spells after i defeat the black sorcerer who wants to keep my identity hidden so he can inherit the power instead.

i tried to read that, made it most the way through it based on v cool concepts outweighing the incredible douchbag of a character, but when it got to the 'final boss' i just could not be hosed to finish it.

I read one of his books. It was good and weird and I enjoyed it. I also didn't turn into a fascist. Still as socialist as ever.

Genre readers only care about what happens next. so naturally a summary can determine if a book is good or not.
|
# ¿ Feb 2, 2020 04:40 |
|
I think this pov probably comes from the genre reader's inability to understand or enjoy a book where the 'protagonist' isn't a hero that they cheer for.
|
# ¿ Feb 2, 2020 17:04 |

It's also worth noting that people in real life are not one dimensional cardboard cutouts like the wizards in all the books you read. Someone who was Fascist did not spend every waking moment thinking solely about fascism and how to turn everyone around them fascist. It might not have been even the number 2 or 3 thing they thought about. People have lots of interests and ideas, and their politics (or racism, or bigotry, whatever) are not necessarily their number one personal attribute and sole focus of their existence.

It is possible (and sometimes even intentional!) to enjoy a book without agreeing with or liking the character.

hey I know this is becoming way off topic but I just wanted to thank all the dinguses in here pearlclutching about reading books written by people with weird/bad ideas. Temple of the Golden Pavilion (the one Mishima I'd read before) was good, but I might not have ever got around to picking up another of his books, if not for you. I'm now only about 40 pages into Spring Snow and already I have at least twice had thoughts about how glad I am to have 300 more pages of this to read. I haven't felt this instantly enamored with a book since the first time I read Sebald. Thanks genre thread. Lol
