the critical question in trademark law is: will consumers confuse the brands? you can see how that isn't a straightforward question to answer, so if two companies share the same name there will always be the threat of litigation hanging in the background. apparently in 1994, the wrestling group and the conservation group entered into a settlement giving the wildlife fund more or less exclusive rights to "WWF." the wrestling group breached that agreement, WWF sued, and WWE was born after it lost the court fight.
