scattered thoughts about the ending now that ive had time to digest it wish there'd been some kinda resolution for Tim - he's one of the most fleshed out characters in the game, but once you get to the present you don't even get like, a single email from him. The Archival team in general was a cool concept that didn't really have much done with it imo? when they were introduced i was looking forward to there being like, active intra-team communication, but that never really happened. was anyone else super, super skeptical of Dylan's confession, especially since he did it through his freaking murderous bad car game? i spent a lot of the finale being super tense and waiting for the other shoe to drop, and tbh im glad that didn't happen, but i feel like that messed with the emotional impact. the files you got afterwards were perfect and tragic tho the revelation that m1nx apparently fabricated counselor ronnie was fukken hilarious even if his page never really had much

What happened to Ruth? Did Sarah ever divorce Gill like he rightfull deserves (or did Gill end up becoming less of a total doofus)? Re3koning? Did Corey ever stop being a sentient fedora? I think it's a very small grievance on top of a very, very good game though. I can't recommend it enough to everyone I know.

I love that so many of the personalities have their own narrative that is less consequential to the plot, like the pious kid whose parents made her leave hypnospace because they think her dumb squishers hobby is linked to Satanism, and almost everyone in the free lands especially that guy with the "interactive" fiction. Also things like Corey writing a huge apology on his main page but still maintaining his hidden Zane sucks page

I am on the 4th case I have three of the offensive images tracked down. Chowder man's page, the design warlock guy, and the biker, but I cannot find the shaman guy. There is mention of a gus parker on Sherriheals and it fits with the story on the Shaman card, but I cannot find any pages associated with Parker. What am I missing here? I will just take an answer at this point

This game is good but having just got to the archival bit, it's kinda made me depressed and , and not even because of the plot part, butbecause it kinda evokes those feels what it's like going back to old geocities or angelfire sites now and pulling up old 90s irc chatlots. just long dead empty relics, and recognizing there's no real value and time marches on, but... well..

Stewing on things after the end. 1. I wasnt sure about what kind of role Dylan was going to play in the final segment. I mean the easiest assumption is as an antagonist and that he'd be actively sabotaging my efforts once he remembered who I was. I'm not sure if it'd make the game better or worse if that was the case. 2. It seems like a lot of people would have had indications that things were going down at Merchantsoft and it's odd that M1nx, the medical examiners, you and Samantha just sat on all their suspicions for 20 years? Okay, I just beat the game and it was excellent. I admit I got stuck towards the end and the eye thing was kinda annoying to use, so I had to look a few things up Ending, I don't think I quite got it. It wasn't clear that Dylan intended to cause the crash. It looks like he really was just gambling on his Outlaw 2000 game to really make it big, sort of a break or make thing because Merchantsoft was in big trouble financially and they needed this--and it just wasn't ready and crashed and killed people? And when it got pinned on Tim he just stayed quiet and now regrets that? I had a few other theories going in that maybe he meant to do some kind of wipe because there were some secrets he didn't want getting out, or because Merchantsoft was in trouble financially & with the health thing and this was some sort of bankrupcy plan or something that overdid it. Also the ending was just 6 files on the people that died and a credit scene right? There isn't anything more?

That's the "ending", though naturally the game goes as long as you want to keep going, and with a game like this the exploration is as important as the actual plot. I'm firmly of the belief that Dylan didn't intend to cause the crash but did so out of severe recklessness and disregard for safety instead of chance and happenstance - it might still be considered manslaughter like it was with Tim, but there's arguably a case for second degree murder, even ignoring the lying by omission in their involvement. Literally, Hypnospace was the livelihood of him and his brother, and the writing was on the wall that it was going down the tubes sooner as opposed to later (the same way the Web 1.0 bubble burst in real life, honestly), so he felt the incredible push to release a Killer App. Unfortunately, it was literally a killer app and somehow nobody thought to tie a lovely game being pushed to literally bricking people's brains, or it was kept in the realm of Conspiracy Theories until evidence was unearthed. But then the guilt of knowing full well that he was responsible was eating at Dylan for twenty years straight.
|
# ? Mar 23, 2019 07:16 |

Also he's a lovely enough programmer that he already has form in this, hence the first timeskip when he bricked everyone's enforcer set at the end of the first section.

Okay yeah that makes sense, about what I was ultimately thought happened. Definitely would have been nice for a few more resolutions, but it ended well enough. And yeah just checking to make sure I didn't miss anything. I agree the exploration is the best, but I think I explored pretty much everything though i'm at like 80% because after getting stuck towards the end I went through everything and more several times over with a fine-tooth comb, so I don't really feel compelled to grab the last 20%. But that's okay. There really is something eerily depressing about going through a relic of a dead world on like an existential level, like that these works were slices of people's lives whom may or may not be dead and it's you keeping that alive. In this it's just a game of course but having grown up in the era and even partaking in my own lovely angelfire site (which of course I can't even remember) and reminiscing and even going back to archives of geocities and stuff and wondering what happened, it hits a little closer to home. I think it feels a bit more like 1997 than 1999 but I get the explanation that its just some poo poo hacked together by Dylan with cheap tools and stuff, which is way behind competitors supposedly with good graphics and ui; and the devs really wanted to capture a slice of the y2k era which worked well. Devs really did a great job in capturing the spirit of the mid-90s, that sort of hopeful communal optimism in that we are all here together in this little bubble of the future and getting hyped and hoped into thi somfg isn't it cool we can communicate across the world, in our sleep, in milliseconds!

It reminded me a lot of compuserve in the 90s. There would be random kids who will chat you up just randomly and explaining to you excitedly about emoticons The cool punk feuds also reminded me of when someone in a chat room decide they have a cult of personality and does a dramatic farewell, and a disgruntled member will call out on their poo poo, all in these reply all emails in html with pictures carefully embedded which break if your resolution is different

Yeah, I was poking around in the files and found that there are multiple videos about how many people died during the mindcrash, from as little as 3 to as many as 6. So I guess the more people you can get banned from Hypnospace for infractions, they won't be on the system during the crash to get killed.

I've seen that you can get Zane banned, but who the heck else can you inadvertently save? I can't imagine you can ban Tiff, considering how much of Tim''s tragedy is tied into his relationship with her, and the old woman in the nursing home doesn't really have a presence at all. Roddy's literally an employee so no way he's getting banned. Can you ban the motorcycle skeleton guy for Gooper crimes maybe?

dmboogie posted:...huh. You can. I don't know if it's just him or anybody in the Gooper Situation, but I know that if you smack him in the middle of the #StandWithGooper movement, he gets banned "to show that [the staff] isn't bluffing". You can also ban Sherri for repeated infractions, but that doesn't affect the news report. As it stands, there is no way to save 3 people, so you only get the 4, 5, or 6 movie.

Holy loving poo poo that first case. Find some Gooper pics and delete them, fine. But there's a first grade teacher sharing some artwork her kids made. When I gaveled the first one, I had the horrible realization that there's enough there to flag her and potentially ban her from Hypnospace. And there's nothing prevent me from doing that and making a tidy profit except my own morality. That's deep

Yeah. Hypnospace Outlaw never judges your morality, but it sure puts you in situations to make you question it yourself quite a bit, if you look and engage with it. That's one of the things that fascinates me about the game.
