They already signed a contract to be paid to air AAF games, and the league would've shut down even faster without the TV broadcasts. If they were forced to renegotiate those deals somebody absolutely would've paid, but the AAF had zero leverage to push for it. I wonder if the XFL will broadcast on the WWE network...

There's no way they were getting games on CBS and NFLN without paying through the nose for time buys -- networks may be thirsty for live content, but they're not thirsty enough to throw money at an unproven startup. In an alternate universe where the AAF didn't turn into a 20-clown-car pileup, maybe they could've leveraged those solid ratings into a paying deal down the line, but it definitely wasn't happening in year one.

Some more AAF stories.quote:Another story that spread far across the AAF offices has Marshawn Lynch crashing the league’s quarterback draft last November at the Luxor casino in Las Vegas. According to one employee, Lynch, whose cousin Josh Johnson was the first pick in that draft, and who is notoriously media-averse, agreed to do a two-minute interview for the Alliance at that event in exchange for $5,000. But when a check was presented to Lynch, he asked that his money be delivered instead in quarters—which AAF co-founder Charlie Ebersol took seriously. In the end, 20,000 quarters were delivered to Lynch’s room and the interview apparently took place . . . but no one ever saw it. It didn’t air.

That’s a tradition that calls back to the 90s dot com bust - when your startup went under your severance package was whatever you could carry out of the office before either your ex-coworkers beat you to it or the landlord had someone come to lock the doors. Sometimes the workers would pick the place clean, sometimes the workers would have to take the landlord to court to get their car keys and family photos back. It wasn’t like your former employer was going to one back looking for their printer when your former employer exists as a line on some accountant’s QuickBooks sheet.

I saw a package of Topps AAF football cards at Walmart. I thought about picking them up for the giggles but it was 20.00. Knowing the history of the league, it will probably be cheaper some day.

I went to one AAF game, the Legends v the Birmingham Iron. Basically the only things i remember were that Turner Field, excuse me, Georgia State Stadium is not a great venue for football and you can still see rooms and poo poo off to the side where they've stashed some of the Braves signage. We were close to the field but so was everybody and it kind of felt like packing sardines in. The team store was overpriced and every time Simms threw a bad pass or a pick the entire crowd of like 1000 people would chant for Aaron Murray. Overall it was just a weird experience.

Dundon is not blameless here but I really think the villains are Ebersol and Polian, with the percentage divided as yet undetermined. They knew there was no funding plan but pressed on. Hell, blame Silicon Valley for making that poo poo an acceptable modern financial model.

Jiminy Christmas! Shoes! posted:Even with how prematurely it ended the AAF was far more successful than the Fyre Festival. Yeah, Fyre Fest came to mind, but the AAF did actually play 8 weeks of football where everyone had pads and helmets and jerseys and the fans had a place to sit and everything. They played in decent venues and didn't have any starting QB's suffer career-altering injuries because of poor playing surfaces or anything like that.

Yeah on some levels it was organized really well. Essentially the problem was that they failed to monetize enough at the start and their war chest was way too small to begin with. The desperation move of bringing in Dundon backfired once he realized how hosed the financial situation really was.
