I was out of town this weekend and just watched the first two episodes. I haven't seen any of season 1 since 2012 I think! K-ON! is still great and I am not surprised by that at all. I did forget how choppy some of the art is in these early episodes when characters' faces are further away from the "camera". It still looks great overall though, especially the food and Yui's hair physics, which I remember being something that instantly stuck out to me as impressive the first time I saw the show. In case anyone is curious about the guitar that Yui ended up purchasing, it's a Gibson Les Paul Standard in Cherry Sunburst finish (and Gibson still makes almost this exact model, but now brands it the Les Paul Traditional). Lucky kid! I worked at Arby's for months to afford my first drumset back in 2001, and it was just a Perl Export that the local music store had bundled with the cheapest, thickest, ugliest cymbals they had. I was so happy about it though!

I made the mistake of watching this a few hours after watching the first episode of We Never Learn. The "mistake" was that this beautiful thing made WNL look like crap. Well, even more like crap. Great animation, great pacing, good timing on the jokes. The camera work is amazing, knowing exactly how long to linger on details. This is going to be my third or fourth watch-through of K-ON! and the craft that goes into the animation blows me away every time. This is KyoAni hitting on all cylinders. And it gets better from here!

Huh, there sure are lots of static shots in episode 5, but it doesn't suffer too badly for it. Ritsu repeatedly trying to not pick Yui to sing made me laugh out loud.
