Yeah that fight was cool. I was wondering how Ah Sahm was gonna cover up the fact that he was all beat up but I guess he showed up all pristine the next day so whatevs. Its funny that he has absolutely no plan at all besides beating people up when the need arises and loving the white lady. Truly living the american dream.

Poor Young Jun. He's the complete opposite of his dad who is ice cold. He really should have stayed in green valley because he's too sentimental and caring for this.

Chekov's Chao's derringer returns! :rip: that guy who had valid complaints about Mai Ling and her thirst for power.

Buckley is fantastic. He's working so many factions / angles and he's clearly sick of the Mayor's poo poo. I can't wait to see his endgame.

Fun episode. The fight was pretty enjoyable and the 'out' made sense in the context of everything. They're building up a lot more minor plot lines than it felt like they did in Banshee which I like because I don't find any particularly group of the cast uninteresting. Troper does a good job world building when he tries and it feels like he's trying much harder here and it's paying off. In the beginning of the episode I almost wondered if we'd see a Game of Thrones esque twist with Asam getting killed, but they haven't quite built up the world enough that I think the show could stand to lose the main character. The speech from the Lady of the Whore House about how Asam lost because he wasn't fighting for a cause was an interesting line that I felt like could have worked to justify his death had he actually died. His story of coming over to find his sister, do the right thing and save her, only to get swept up in her gang war and killed, could have been a very good foundation on which to continue the story of "San Francisco". I guess it's too soon to hope for the next Thrones or The Wire but from what I've seen in this show, I kind of trust that Troper could pull it off.

That said, I really dislike flashback episodes. While they obey the rule of 'show, don't tell', I'd much rather have backstories like that remain somewhat obscure in the viewers mind because it feels like it if is really that important they'd put more work into them as opposed to just ~5 minutes of screentime with characters we aren't actually invested in because they're the younger versions of characters we know. I can't be too critical on them, a good flashback is hard to do. I also found the way the characters spoke to each other as a bit too direct for an actual Asian family but that's a bit nitpicky as well.

You know, now I am a little bit disappointed he didn't die. It could have worked too. It would have also finalized to the viewer that his sister really is gone and Mai Ling is who she is now, especially with her ordering his death.

Factory fight owned. I'm hoping that they show more of his background training stuff too. That stuff is a very kind of Martial Arts film type thing, where the protagonist fails but then rediscovers himself by remembering his roots. Also lol at the look on Ah Sahm's face when Leary catches his kick

Ok, finale. Some parts felt a bit rushed. I almost feel like it would have worked better as a season opener rather than a closer.

I really enjoy Leary as a character though. I thought he might make the boys leave the black fellas alone and get them their drink but his little speech was fantastic. Superman punching Ah Sahm was great and their fight was an excellent tease for things to come.

I get the feeling Ah Toy is going to unknowingly set her new girl up to be a fall guy. The real Ah Toy lived to be 100 and died of old age so we'll see how the show handles this. The real life characters in the show are going to be interesting to watch. Deadwood didn't hold to historical canon if it could tell a better story so I'm hoping they play with this here.

Good show. I want more.

I sort of feel the overall arc of his character in this episode is that he doesn't want to work for anyone, sees how the people on the bottom are being treated, realizes that he can't help people from that position and rejoins so he can eventually gain more power to actually be able to fight for the Asian community rather than for an individual group. Young Jun asks him to come back early on in the episode because YJ thinks his old man is weak and that the old ways of doing things need to be changed. I think Ah Sahm sort of chooses a path at the end and the path is towards carving out a bigger piece for Asians.

"Don't you loving move." "poo poo."

All the plots advanced a ton tonight. Ahaha watching Mai Ling's terrible partnership with the Fung Hai backfire spectacularly was fantastic. I bet she thought she would finally have some respect being the boss, but Buckley and the Fung Hai are still making GBS threads on her. She should get some women in power tips from Ah Toy or even Penelope.

I am all in for Ah Sahm, Chinese gangster and part time revolutionary.

Right, but I'm pretty sure Father Jun is still in charge so Young Jun can't make that sort of call on his own. I'm just assuming he doesn't know right now and I trust the show will address it in season 2.

I thought there'd definitely be more dead characters by the end of this season, but I'm happy to be surprised if the show puts out a finale this good.

I do feel like there hasn't been an awful lot of forward movement generally, but I'm still happy with what I've seen so far. Hopefully next year we'll get some drama.

Having heard of this show early on and liking the premise, I finally managed to catch up. I was a BIG fan of Banshee, and loved the Easter eggs like the Banshee store or pub or whatever it was, almost expected Sugar to come hobbling out. I know Cinemax hasn't been known in the past for great original series (or any at all outside of Strike Back and Banshee), but I'd say they are coming into their own if only with crazy action shows like this. What I dig about the show the most is the martial arts that at least seems realistically-choreographed instead of wire-fu. I also like how it portrays a taste of how the Chinese were actually treated when they immigrated here during that time. And, I love the Western feel, it reminded me a bit of Shanghai Noon, albeit a bit more serious.

It's pretty cool how Ah Sahm is not a Mary Sue--he's flawed, and while I was initially kind of shocked that he lost the duel with Li Yong, it worked well with the story and in the end I was kind of glad they didn't have him winning against all odds (I had a small problem with that kind of thing in Banshee with Hood almost always winning despite getting his rear end kicked constantly, or getting saved at the last second with the exception of his fight with Proctor). I'm really looking forward to seeing how they will continue to flesh him out as a character moving forward, how they will handle the relationship with Mai Ling, and if there will be a rematch between him and Li Yong. But I enjoyed the dynamic between O'Hara and Lee the most, it's almost like a meet-cute in the pilot that turns into a kind of friendship. Can't wait for old Western San Francisco buddy cop antics from them next season with Lee being Good Cop and O'Hara being the Loose Cannon. Langley Kirkwood is always awesome, good use here as a Burton-type character who "fights" behind the scenes, and Leary is a great union boss/gangster-type character with whom I'm looking forward to seeing Ah Sahm throw down next year.

I mean, I can be critical of this season for sure, I'm not trying to be all over its dick or anything, but overall I thought it was really well-done and I'm a sucker for good, realistic choreography and over-the-top fight scenes. I'd rather find a bunch of things to like than find poo poo to be critical of. The downside is, it makes me miss Banshee all the more, even though I'm glad it was a show that knew when it was time to wrap poo poo up even if they messed up the execution in the final season. Warrior for sure feels like a worthy spiritual successor to Banshee, though.

Taslim is from Chinese descent, at least. Also the Netflix action flick starring him is incredible if you need more action goodness.

Does anyone know if the stunt coordinator team that did Banshee is also the same as this? I know Tropper brought on some of the Banshee folks, but I'd love to know where their whole team went.

Banshee set a standard for action that very few shows have even come close to approaching, with none coming to mind right now.

I just started Warrior and liked the first episode, so far I'm optimistic

Brett Chan was the stunt coordinator, he did Marco Polo, Iron Fist and he's doing Snow Piercer. No fight choreographer listed so i assume it was him.
Marcus Young from Banshee went to Marvel for Ant Man and Infinity War as a stuntman

Yeah this is one of my favorite shows right now. Finally finished the first season and loved that final confrontation in the factory. They really nail the aesthetic, and the hits are as hard as they come - that fight with the Yellow Demon in Mai Ling's house with that kick out of loving nowhere an episode or two back was loving hardcore. Loving it.

Definitely highly recommended if you're looking for martial arts historical melodrama.

I think the well-defined setting and factions help the story out a lot. Also, it seems like there’s going to be stronger ties to historical events, which makes this season a little more exciting plot-wise.

I didn't even realize the show was back until this post. So thanks friend :tipshat:

The opener was good. This is the second and final season, so I'm curious if they will go the Rome season 2 route where they crammed in like 3 seasons worth of plot into one. iirc the annoucement was that this would last season was given at the same time as their renewal, so they probably had time to write a satisfying conclusion.

I wonder what building Leary blew up at the end.

I can't help but feel something horrible is going to happen to Sophie. I did love her sassing the poo poo out of the mayor Samuel though.

Was a really good start, set up the stakes nicely for the season. I hope the creative team gets to do something else together once this one is wrapped up, I really dig the mechanics and direction of the show. The little stuff like most of the primary cast having up to three whole different speaking cadences depending on scene partners. It's a cool show, it is well thought out and crafted and as mentioned it really does seems like we're heading for the Rome S2 rollercoaster through plot which i'm all for.

With the amount of onboarding and setup this first episode had you could probably start here without even seeing the first season.
