The bright side of the show getting bad is at least it killed the mega-thread with 1 gigabyte of GIFs in the single opening post.

Downside is spoiler banner won't cause the same amount of crackly nerd voice crying.

I liked how Theon's sexual conquests got sadder over time.

He went from Ros to the captain's homely daughter.

Then he lost his whole dick.

That cut scene goes on far too long. And fishing is too passive an activity for Tywin.

Anyway...This battle map is very worrisome.

Even given that the dragons can do some strafing runs to break up the mass of the horde into smaller groups. From the Battle of the Bastards, Jon should know to

a. create bottlenecks / kill zones to funnel the enemy forces into areas so they can be surrounded or outmaneuvered and picked off.

b. Keep the horse-riding Dothraki on the far side of Winterfell until later in the battle so they can charge in and attack the flank of the horde. Putting them in front of the Unsullied is not going to go well and negates their main attributes of speed and mobility.

They made this plan since they never had a chance to play the Rome Total War games.

The Battle of Blackwater took place at night and didn't look nearly as lovely, same for the fight on the Wall between the Night's Watch and the Wildings. Both those battles look significantly better. Some super questionable choices form DP for The Long Night imo. For all the hype built up for the Battle of Winterfell, its execution on almost all fronts of filmmaking was basically the cinematic equivalent of a whoopee cushion deflating.

Making the Battle of Winterfell that large in scope and having it last as long as it did was its hugest setback; it didn't need to be over an hour long battle. A lot of crew involved mentioned "battle fatigue" in the behind-the-scenes featurette, and how they felt they got around that... but no, no they didn't lol. It was a chore to watch.

It's probably because Neil Marshall is actually a good director?

“That cat was really not fun to work with,” Benioff said. “There’s a reason the phrase ‘like herding cats’ came into existence.”

“Dogs generally do what you ask them to do if they’re smart and well trained,” Weiss added. “Cats have their own agenda.”

That sequence is masterful, if you take the German view of the battle they start winning, massacring entire landing boats before they can even reach the beach, then the US get a contested breakthrough and then the germans get routed and slaughtered. There are reversals, there's change, there's an evolution of things happening and you understand everything, they even tell you why there are no tanks in the beach and why the soldiers land without support.Defeat looks assured for the allies till they start doing small things to win.

The germans also stay inside the loving bunkers instead of fighting in front of them.

You can also follow the battle from beginning to end and the overall flow makes logical sense.

Plus in many ways it was historically accurate since Omaha was pretty much saved by leaders/NCOs taking initiative and getting pinned soldiers moving towards the objectives.

It's not comparable IMO. LOTR Two Towers costs 133 million in today's dollar. The entire season 8 of GOT, with four times the runtime, costs just over 90 million.

I think it's frankly magic what GOT has been able to do with what's a relatively small budget for a major fantasy production.

Well this season it's more like frankly what little GOT has done this season with its major budget...
