Not really an effortpost, but the original run was my first experience with the idea that anime could be calming/relaxing, rather than exciting. It also got creative with its presentation in a way that prefigured the rise of Shinbo, especially the episode where the Yuki fanclub visits Hana's house.

If the author was upset about the show, the only real grounds would be a) they shuffled around the order of some things later on and b) the last half of the final episode was an anime-original end that was kinda slapped together. Everything else was extremely faithful to the original and very well put together, especially the soundtrack from the sadly departed Ritsuko Okazaki.

Are you watching the 2001 or 2019 version? Aside from the 2001 version having the introduction of one character much earlier than in the manga (they wouldn't have appeared at all by the time the show was done otherwise) and having the last half of the final episode conclude a character arc that doesn't touch on how the manga version of that arc progressed at all, both are extremely faithful adaptations of the manga, to the point where you can constantly go "I remember this exact shot/panel from the other versions."

I started watching this and it appears to involve the most abusive and dysfunctional "family" I have ever seen. I volunteered at a domestic violence shelter for 10 years and this show just makes me sad because I can just mentally tick off the boxes of the various kinds of abusers and mental illnesses.

I asked my wife to spoil the whole series for me since she read all the manga and knowing everyone's motivations is the only way I can stomach all the horrible poo poo these people do to each other.

The series is definitely about a cycle of abuse, but it never felt like misery porn to me. Just about every character we meet understands that the situation is wrong and is trying to find some way to escape or solve it, even if they sometimes lash out and hurt those around them.

The whole plotline about Yuki and Kyo having trouble finding Tohru's house in the smartphone era would be very different.

Possibly, but Japanese residential streets usually don't have actual designations like "5th St" and IIRC the "address" is more of a reference number for their postal route than an incremented number the way we're used to. That's why you typically see someone draw a map when explaining where they live, because they can't say "go down X street, turn right on Y lane, it's number 12345." If Yuki & Kyo only have the general area and the map, they'd still have to try and overlay the map on their smartphone's mapping program. Plus they're looking for a house where the renovations are "finished," so they'd exclude the house as not the right one until they remember that the exterior walls aren't done regardless.

That happens much sooner in the manga than it did in the first show iirc, which used it as part of the finale.

It did make for a fantastic penultimate and half-ultimate episode.

It really depends on what you're liking in the new adaptation - the old version absolutely beats the new one on amping up the humor (Yuki's fan club introduction has so much more character,) and the original soundtrack, especially the OP, is a classic.

The comedic timing of the original was impeccable. I hope the new version doesn't let us down with the visit to Hana's house.

Iirc (manga) the day the trio cried was when Akito, the Jade Emperor, was born, right?

That's what I recall, aside from not recognizing the particular title you used.

For some reason they cut Kagura giving Kyo her ~20 lb Ai no Chocolate. They even allude to it with Shigure asking whether she brought chocolate.

Jesus gently caress that had me crying. It was too emotional. Admittedly, it may be because I'm in a bad moment and can sympathize more than I wish I did but all of this episode, both from Momiji and from Tohru, hit me really drat hard.

Momiji and Tohru are surprisingly similar in their perspectives.

Why would you let your kid watch his mom say that she wishes he was never born??? Dad needs to work on his loving his kid for the both of them a bit.

It's not necessarily something he had any foreknowledge of/control over, and he was probably preoccupied with trying to deal with her illness.

I'd highly recommend that people check out the original version of this week's episode. It's by far the funniest thing in the series, and the direction is like Shinbou despite airing before he became a brand.

For various reasons I'm about 6 episodes behind, although I suspect I know the answer I have to ask: is it still really good?

It's still a solid adaptation, but some things lack the emotional resonance of the first anime (especially the stuff in the most recent episode).

She isn't the worst, that character has yet to appear, although I think they've been referred to at least once.

The series is ultimately about broken people eventually managing to start making the first steps towards healing (and the end of that process is so far off that we won't see it), so that train ain't stopping anytime soon.

They really want you to hate Akito and most of the Soma parents, don't they?

Souma Parents Score:

Good: Hiro, Kisa, Kagura, Ritsu

Bad: Yuki/Ayame, Kyo, Rin, [CLASSIFIED]

Somewhere in-between: Momiji (his mom hurt him a lot, but she was also not really sane at the time, and his dad clearly cares for him but is caught in the middle)

Unknown: Haru, Shigure, Hattori, Kureno

It's fairly evenly spread out numerically, but since Yuki and Kyo are more central to the narrative their bad parents loom larger.

Wow, these kids are NOT good at acting.

Also I'm pretty sure that whoever was responsible for writing the script just gave up because of horrible casting and told everyone to improvise

Did you miss the prior episode where they redid the script to just roll with the actors' personalities?

This week, time marches on and things change, sometimes faster than the participants could have ever imagined.

The ending of the story is a process, not a singular event.

I want to take almost all the families in this show, throw them in the garbage, and replace them with Hiro's mom.

Like I posted a couple pages (and the better part of a year) back, the split between good and bad parents is more even than you'd realize, because the bad parenting is more pertinent to the plot and the central characters. Also, Akito's family is what the [REDACTED] bit was referring to.

I'd argue that the old retainer lady is the closest thing the show has to a pure villain. Even Ren, as awful as she is, is a rather broken person, but the nameless old lady doesn't have that excuse.
