Ana is a babe and Rami as a younger villain to Craig’s broody old man will be a nice contrast that isn’t really done much in Bond. View to a Kill was the closest and even then they didn’t capitalise on it and instead acted like Moore was in his prime.

I hope the movie is not a remake of Dr No or whatever, I liked that Skyfall was basically a sequel to Goldeneye and was more or less a deboot that brought Craig back to being the old Prereboot era Bond. By comparison Spectre and Quantum were really weak follow ups to Casino Royale and I’d prefer that the movie moved on from that and did its own thing.

So, I guess they either go Quantum of Solace redux and carry on a second part story from Spectre (Which I hope not, because it was trash), or they just Diana Rigg Lea Seadoux. Though it would however be funny to see a mopey James Bond having been dumped after it becomes clear he has too many issues to actually have a long lasting relationship.

Ana is a fantastic pick for a Bond girl as well, but the age gap makes me a bit queasy if they're going to partner her up with Craig in some way.

Yeah, it's not as bad as Roger Moore and Tanya Roberts (when prepping for A View to a Kill, Moore was terrified upon learning that not only was he old enough to be Roberts' father, but he was also literally older than her mother), but it would definitely be squicky.

If you haven't Dr.No for a long time, you should do it again. It could have been a low budget disaster, but no, they pulled it off. And the fish in Dr. No's aquarium were just stock footage

quote:

The budget for Dr No was under $1m for the whole picture. My budget was £14,500. I filled three stages at Pinewood full of sets while they were filming in Jamaica. It wasn't a real aquarium in Dr No's apartment. It was a disaster to tell you the truth because we had so little money. We decided to use a rear projection screen and get some stock footage of fish. What we didn't realise was because we didn't have much money the only stock footage they could buy was of goldfish-sized fish, so we had to blow up the size and put a line in the dialogue with Bond talking about the magnification. I didn't see any reason why Dr No shouldn't have good taste so we mixed contemporary furniture and antiques. We thought it would be fun for him to have some stolen art so we used Goya's Portrait of the Duke of Wellington, which was still missing at the time. I got hold of a slide from the National Gallery - this was on the Friday, shooting began on the Monday - and I painted a Goya over the weekend. It was pretty good so they used it for publicity purposes but, just like the real one, it got stolen while it was on display.[15]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._No_(film)#Production

Thankfully they cut some scenes from the book, like the fight agains the squid. Bond and Honey are also naked on the island, but they could obviously not film that. Also Bond doesn't explain why the mix of Blacks (can you guess the word I replaced?) and Chinese are the worst people ever :catstare:.

Also, Octopussy is great. Jojo-Saw for the win.

It really is astounding how long they take to crank these films out now and they still end up as weird messes.
Like that whole torture chair they were saying cost however many million to construct, I assume they only kept that stupid scene in the film because they had wasted so much money on that chair prop.

Anyway, this stupid editorial came up on my google news and I mostly agree with it.

Craig is probably the best actor, and definitely has some of the best directors and cinematography, but his movies are such a slog.

I also dislike the movie-to-movie progression (that also happened in the Star Trek reboot) of:
First film: an origin story! Meet our hero before he became the person you know!
Second film: our hero's very next mission! He's still green and makes mistakes, but learns from them to become closer to the person you know!
Third film: our hero is burned out and disillusioned after all his gruelling adventures (that you didn't see), and is on the verge of quitting. Wait, what?

I strongly agree with this.
The end of Skyfall setting up Mallory as the new M and "promising" that the next film was going to be a straight mission, no interconnectedness, no going rogue was the biggest setup for the great disappointment that was Spectre.

(I still think Spectre was actually a better movie than Skyfall though.)

I guess I’m weird cause I think all the Craig movies have been at least decent. I actually thought Spectre was really good! Sure everything with Blofeld is ridiculous but that’s a plus in my book. The key to a good Bond movie for me is mood and atmosphere and Spectre has a distinct, surreally slick vibe to it that I like.

AstroWhale

Spectre should have ended with the explosion of Blofeld's base and him escaping. And C being taken care of at the same time, by the others.
James Bond running throught the old base with these pictures hanging around was pretty dumb.
Blofeld could have been recast like in the good old days. I don't think he will be in the next one, right?

Cacator

You're quite good at turning me on.

Spectre has one of the best opening sequences in the series but it quickly falls apart after that (Radiohead's theme is far superior to the forgettable Sam Smith song for one thing), the car chase in Rome couldn't be more boring, Bautista was wasted, and the attempt to connect all of Craig's movies never felt anything more than contrived. The Austin Powers in Goldmember plot point (and the Star Trek Into Darkness "reveal" of Blofeld) were just pointless. Just let Blofeld be Blofeld for chrissakes, nobody cares. They shouldn't have put so much effort into Bond settling down with Madeleine Swann either because most of her dialogue boils down to "what's that?"

Edit: they also really let everyone in the theatre down when M says "guess we know what C stands for" and Ralph Fiennes DOESN’T say "oval office"

There was no point in bringing Blofeld into the mix when they had a Bond who was already so close to being done with the role. There was no way it wasn't going to be a waste, I mean even if Waltz had knocked it out of the park and the movie was a huge hit, you've still got Craig looking for the exit and maybe one more movie in him if you're lucky. It was just totally unnecessary and feels like a desperate move, which is weird considering they were coming off probably the most well-received entry of Craig's run in Skyfall.

A little patience would have been rewarded I think. Let Craig ride off into the sunset, recast Bond and when that next Bond debuts in 2021 or whatever you start his run with a Blofeld storyline in mind right from the beginning.

Skyfall is a very trendy movie that basically owes its entire existence to The Dark Knight, but it's still good.

Setting aside its dumb plot and completely shitass writer's block of a final act, Spectre isn't even fun to watch for spectacle purposes. The car chase is terrible. It's a very pretty movie but at least when you watch Blade Runner 2049 you kinda expect nothing much to happen plot-wise.

Another big contributing factor was I remember talk about how they went to so many different exotic locations to film really ballooned the cost. The series has always been globe hopping, but I don't think that means you actually have to transport the crew across the planet several times over.

I'd completely forgotten about the base explosion until now, which shows how underwhelming it was. Bond disinterestedly god-modes his way out of the base, then there's an explosion which for all its scale is regarded by the characters and by extension the audience as if someone's popped a crisp packet.

With that and the ridiculous self-indulgence of the single-shot opening, I can only imagine that the director went "I didn't even want to do this, but you're paying me an ungodly amount of money and are apparently suckers, so I'm going to take the piss."

The moment it was announced she was coming back, I bet one of my friends that she'd be fridged in Act 1 as motivation for Bond to go after the bad guy. Cf the Bournes Supremacy and Jason. I'll honestly be more surprised if they don't kill her off.

The comedic scene with the small car during the car chase in Spectre is messing me up. It is a Roger Moore moment and it doesn't fit.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvZAXiqr_D0&t=96s
Music switching from diagetic to non diagetic and back again, then that man in his small car and then the airbag opening in the end.
This comes right after the very dramatic meeting scene. I thought the joke should be at the end of the scene, to release the tension.
It's a tonal mess.

Which brings me to my favourite joke that misses in the franchise. A woman that drops her tomatoes (cherries?), because of the chase at the beginning of Quantum of Solace.
She literally says "Mama Mia" afterwards. Nobody notices it, because it's terrible and the editing ruins the timing. This also comes right after some random woman
was shot in public.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHjJrTdCKMQ&t=147s

I don't want to compare these scenes with the one in Moonraker, which is a joke all the way through.
