west coast was cool but holy gently caress, gently caress sand flies. we found some beautiful beaches that just totally desolate and had no one for miles and ran around naked for a bit just because why not, theres no one loving here. The intense sound of trillions of cicadas really threw me off since cicadas aren't really a thing here and when i first heard them driving into it, i thought something must have been wrong with the car making this weird static noise. but after a day it was actually kinda peaceful and cool. overall really liked south island though, reminded me a lot of california except without any of the people and a bit more scenic, which was rad. could drive forever and just see interesting poo poo and not another soul in sight. really wanted to move back since my job is earthquake/geotech engineering, but . shame its a lolbertarian shitshow paradise really, seems like it should be a lot better than that. still a sliver better than america but that's not a high bar. really sad I never made it up to the north island. woulda like to see glow caves and the hobbit town and auckland but oh well, maybe another time. You could've gone to the glow worm cave in te anau instead it's better than the one in north island i think because you get to go on a rad boat ride on a peaceful lake. Also the lolbertarian poo poo is getting canned now that labour is in power starting with clamping down on the housing while boosting education. Overall it's moving in a better direction i rekon. Also there are a lot of places that the locals go while the tourist dont really know about. So you can still enjoy the christmas/jan summer weather with like no one around you

It open to the public and free, and was dead quiet when we went. Not as many worms as the north island one, but a much better experience. South island is waaaaaaaay better

The south island is great to walk/drive around and look at poo poo If you want to live in a new zealand city (why?) then go to the north island. And then pick wellington anyway cos auckland is poo poo

Like anywhere else people romanticise, it's great to visit. Moving your entire life to a foreign country is a big deal, especially when that country is a ~3 hour flight to the nearest other country and probably in a different timezone to your family and friends. Some people can handle uprooting easily, others can't handle the thousands of minor differences in culture. Sorry this is the jpg thread I'll post some beach when I'm not phone posting. Maybe some paua patties mmmm

Our internet was so bad foreign celebrities would complain about it openly. They even launched a huge promotional campaign featuring the stars of Top Gear when the show was as at its peak. The promo was quietly pulled when an independent review of the new system declared it obsolete and should be completely replaced before the rollout was finished.
