I'm not a frequent poster here but I have a story from my day today I figured you guys would appreciate. When I'm driving my C7 I'll occasionally try and pick my niece (who's 9) up from school because she always gets a kick out of it and the other kids like seeing my car. Due to my work schedule I hadn't been able to do that yet this year and they're almost out of school for the year so I moved stuff around to make it happen today. It was a big hit of course, and on the way home she realizes (despite riding in the car many, many times), that there's no back seat. This was the following exchange - "What kind of car only has one row of seating?" "The most fun kind kiddo"

Thank God my next semester starts on Monday and my work hours are getting cut back. I'll miss the money, but if I have to deal with 50 hours a week for another week in this place, I'm going to throttle one of the morons who yell at me for not being able to tell what kind of bolt they need from a picture of a hole

Man the rage I feel after just driving through TORRENTIAL downpour in super heavy traffic (because ex wife was 2 hours late picking up kids after we've been at the beach for 8 days you would think she would be anxious to see them) - SO MANY IDIOTS WITH NO LIGHTS ON. These weren't old lovely cars these were modern 2-3 year old cars WITH NO drat LIGHTS ON COULDN'T SEE 20 FEET IN FRONT OF YOU WEATHER. IDIOTS

It's because on modern cars the dashboard is always illuminated so you don't need lights on to see your gauges. It's always newer cars I see driving at night with their lights off too.

There's no loving reason why in 2019, we can't have it such that all new cars have (and default to) auto-on lights that can only be disabled manually each drive cycle.

The issue during rain is that auto-on headlights may think it's too bright to turn on, and drivers think it's not their problem to override it.

My Hyundai is very good at turning the lights on anytime wipers are set to on no matter the light but it was gray and near zero visibility these Camrys and even a newish Hyundai Santa Fe they must have had auto on disabled. I can disable it on mine but why?

Oh God, my roommate just bought some metal fenders for his jeep, and they're so loving badly made, there's a huge visible seam where the two pieces of metal meet, and the joint is just held together with booger tack welds, no overlap of any kind between the vertical and horizontal parts. Of course the provided hardware doesn't work. I tried to bring it up gently, and I think I hurt his feelings.

It keeps getting worse, they don't fit the profile of the wheel wells and there's this horrible gap, the fender liners don't work, so there's exposed engine and undercarriage bits, the front fender support sticks out past the new fender, and his mounting solution was to use self-tapping screws to attach them, so there's bonus holes in the body. I tried to point out how awful these loving things are to him again, illustrating my point by sticking my finger in the gap between the molded body line and the Jeep, and he said "I don't mind that" These things look like what would happen if you gave me a pile of sheet metal, an afternoon off work, a $99 HF mig welder, spray paint, and a couple cases of beer. They're these things, keep in mind this is a PROMO shot of them. E: looking at Amazon, the self-tapping screws are manufacturer supplied. There are hundreds of reviews raving about how awesome these things are, I think I just don't get "Jeep People" Elviscat fucked around with this message at 04:00 on May 31, 2019 |

My 03 Jeep had a setting to turn the headlights on anytime the wipers are on. No reason not to have that. Especially now that everything is CANBUS, it's just programmed logic instead of wiring up more complex relays.

Looks like I get to join the sparkly bits in an oil change club. The oil looked fine coming out, just dirty as hell (as you'd expect with 9k on it). But once I poured it into a container, there were some decently sized metal bits in the pan. A brand new pan that I bought a few hours ago. And the cartridge filter had plenty of shiny bits. A friend has offered me a 98 Corolla for a bit more than I'd want to pay, but owner finance, and I'm pretty sure I can talk him down quite a bit based on the broken AC. Downsides: needs AC condenser (been cracked for over 4 years, so no telling what kind of other damage there is from it being essentially open - I doubt it's holding any kind of pressure), it's been parked for almost 4 years with the occasional start to move it around, 3 speed automatic, black on black in TX, 13 inch wheels that will definitely need new tires (plus battery, plus ac condenser, and very likely every major oil seal on the engine once it starts getting driven again). I'd also lose out on all but 2 driving gigs because of the car's age, though I start my new W2 job next week (p/t for now, so I still need to do the delivery jobs until I get past the probationary period). I'm supposed to inherit an Avalon sometime this summer or fall; the Saturn isn't making any odd noises (from the engine) yet either. But it smokes like a motherfucker on a cold start if it's been sitting more than 2 days (complete with flashing CEL), 2nd gear is almost dead on the Saturn (you can gingerly upshift into 2nd, but can't downshift without double clutching), and the Saturn is very noticeably down on both power and MPG (primary O2 is still responding fine, fuel trims look fine, but it struggles with hills that GF's Matrix laughs at). The Saturn's only savings graces are keyless entry, a decent stereo (which can easily be moved to another car), and cold AC. EDIT: I got the VIN out of him. it's a 2004 LE, $1800, and he'll let me make payments. That's a lot more appealing than a 98. Still been parked for a good bit, but he's gonna try to get it started and do a walkaround video for me. I may jump on it, the price is pretty good so long as the only AC issue is the condenser. I'll be budgeting for a battery, fuel filter, and tires right off the bat. Goober Peas posted:I witnessed a current-generation F150 in a rollover accident this afternoon. It was pretty gruesome. It changed lanes into a car, lost control, went into the median and started rolling. It landed upright, but the cab had collapsed almost completely down to the door handles. They had to extract the driver, who was pretty banged up. How's that aluminum body working out for Ford? But seriously, that sounds pretty terrible, but the F series has never done particularly well in crash tests. The 10th gen liked to remove feet and crush chest cavities, and was bad enough that it got the worst possible rating from the IIHS in the frontal offset test (the most common kind of head-on accident). My stepdad owned an 01 extended cab, basically the exact same truck crash tested in those videos. He's in a '19 now. Barely related, but he looked at an ex-rental '18 being offered by a dealer not affiliated with the rental company. Carfax showed an accident with "moderate damage", with the note "it hit a building". The dealer put plenty of pictures up, and it was misaligned panels and mismatched paint galore. They put the VIN up too. The auction photos weren't pretty, but it looks like the driver probably walked from a pretty nasty accident (and no, it did not have a salvage title). Seller photo - you can see the paint difference on the fender and front door, and the gaps don't look right (front photos show hilariously bad gaps on the hood and passenger headlight too) Auction photo: randomidiot fucked around with this message at 09:28 on May 31, 2019 |

I just did the second oil change on the Silverado yesterday and there are some very fine metal particles on the drain magnet. It's been ticking since I got it and some gen3s do that but I think there's something wrong in the valvetrain. Luckily I got the slightly bigger cam from larrymer and when I swap in the bigger radiator and electric fans I'll do the cam at the same time and replace all the lifters and rockers.

I was going from just north of tampa florida to east texas to visit my dad and that side of my family for a fishing trip a few years back. I wisely pulled out $200 in cash, because after filling up for gas where I-75 and I-10 meet, my card was shut down for fraud without me knowing. I had planned on hitting a cheap motel around the time I hit Louisiana, but found out my card was shut down while filling up in Slidell at 10pm. I figured gently caress it, called my dad to let him know I was going to just head on through and floored it the rest of the way to Longview Texas. I left florida at about 1pm, I got into east texas at around 4am after driving 945 miles. The next morning I woke up about 7:30am so we could help my uncle and cousin finish packing for our fishing trip and my dad suggested we take my truck over and I told him sure, but I wasn't gonna be the one driving. gently caress that poo poo. In total for that 2 week stint, I drove 3k miles not including trips around town and trips to the lake, etc. The drive back I detoured across the entirety of the south to get drunk with some friends and play blackjack in a casino in Biloxi. A+ road trip would do again. But in something with comfier seats and less exhaust noise. 5.3 v8 with flowmaster super 44s and dump pipes for 16 hours straight is not something I want to repeat anytime soon.

I did LAX to Albuquerque last week in one day bringing the Merc home (~850 miles? - did the last 400+ to Denver the next day) and remembered/reminded myself how much that sucks. I have done Reno to Denver a bunch of times in one shot too. All I get out of these experiences is that even in nice luxury cars this kind of distance driving is fatiguing, and the motorcyclist idiots that do Iron Butt competitions etc. are obviously hopped up on crank and dangerously stupid. PS: averaging 70 mph is hauling. Consider that your speed of 0 while filling gas, peeing, stretching, eating, etc is always dragging your average down. 70mph avg over a long distance means you were doing extra-legal speeds nearly the entire time anywhere in the US, ask me how I know: Tremek fucked around with this message at 16:52 on May 31, 2019 |

Plus, you do 1100 miles, 16 hours in the car, that's probably at least 4 stops to take a piss, and two of those stops to eat, and one to get gas.
