Uplink, originally released in 2001, is a game where you play as a freelance hacker for the Uplink corporation in what was quaintly considered a dystopic future back then. The game fortunately takes a very "Hollywood Hacking" approach, since frantically downloading files as your trace tracker beeps wildly is a lot more fun than creating fake password reset pages and e-mailing old people who don't know better.

Uplink OS

Given that Uplink was made in 2001, it has since aged, uh, pretty rough. We're using Uplink OS, a mod from 2016 that makes the game much nicer looking and user friendly.

The original:

Uplink OS:

As you can see, much cleaner and less cluttered.

The LP

I played a ton of Uplink in high school, so I know my way around a system or two. I also haven't really played the game for like seven years and only saw a bit of Uplink OS before now, so I'm going to be pretty sloppy for the first few episodes. Grace on the other hand has never seen or played Uplink, so his perspective is completely fresh.

Goddammit this Cello is way out of tune!
I, too, very recently got back into Uplink using Uplink OS which I learned about from one of the Prison Architect monthly streams.

It's one of my most favorite hacking games. Not as complex as Hacknet is but much more hollywood hacking.

Oh boy, Uplink.
I remember ordering that directly from Introversion in 2001. Still have the CD somewhere (including the copy protection hex list)

Are you "just" going to play the main missions, or are you also showing off the Easter eggs and how to do other fun stuff (banks, a certain database,...) ?

We'll definitely play more than just the story, honestly this LP started because I wanted to play Uplink, so it'll end whenever I dont feel like playing anymore :v: most likely when we run out of new stuff to do.

I never got far into Uplink due to a mix of technical issues and the UI. It'll be interesting to see how this Uplink OS mod fixes half of that.

Hacknet is pretty good, although it's a lot more linear than Uplink's sandbox with a story.

I think you can accept the "trace a hacker" missions that you were the cause of, at least in one version of the game. I know I told them the IP was "127.0.0.1" for a few of them and got paid with no repercussions.

Really? I had thought that finding out it was you all along was a death sentence if you gave them the info.

Additionally, you don't need to bother with logs on the machines you're doing the mission on really. Just go to Internic and properly delete the logs.

I had thought that you needed to not delete ALL of the logs though, as there will be a log of you leaving the admin of Internic, so generally you should be leaving the fact that you logged into the admin, and then the log of you leaving won't be suspicious.

You haven't gotten a Game Over yet though, so maybe not?

No you're right, I forgot until after the session that you want to leave the log of you connecting and delete everything else. Fortunately a combination of me chainsawing through everything and low rent servers not having the resources to track that properly has saved me :v: I did a bit of housekeeping offscreen to make sure nobody comes from behind and gets us for that

Nice, it would kind of be anti-climatic to have the run come to a screeching halt in Ep. 3 if you started on the education servers and they got you for something so silly.

Can you get someone else screwed over by deleting the log of them logging in but leaving in them logging out?

There are missions later on to frame other hackers (via changing logs) which is an unimaginably douchey thing to do, but it means theres a mechanic involving other hackers getting busted. It's a possibility

If you keep a nest egg ready you can buy a new gateway, IIRC. Though you might lose your apps... hmm. Can you prep a second gateway in advance? Or do you need one of the security measures to stop being arrested?

The only way you can get a new gateway is by frying your gateway when the feds arrive, otherwise you get full on disavowed by Uplink and you lose your save file. If you blow it in time, Uplink keeps you on as an active member since the feds have no evidence and Uplink won't see any blowback from it.

Basically as long as you don't cause any issues for Uplink, you're fine, but the second they start catching heat they're like :byewhore:

I like the message you get from Uplink if you blow your gateway when the feds come.
Also you still get a "unauthorized computer access" crime on your rap sheet (which you can easily clean, of course. Doesn't really do anything, but it's neat )

Stilll hurts if you have a fully upgraded top of the line model though. Not that money is any issue in this game if you know what you are doing :)

I love how if you go full on for it and steal a ton of cash, it rockets your rank up and you start only getting missions you are really not ready for. It was quite a surprise for me when I first pulled off a heist.

This, you can easily ruin someone's life just by loving with their money or by getting arrested by the police. Banks do not give a gently caress if they take all your stuff and are in the wrong for doing so, there's been mulitple documentaries about this. As for getting arrested by the police, doesn't matter if they're later proven innocent or never tried, many places will just fire you outright while you are gone and blacklist you by the industry.

Now if you are a big guy with enough money, at medium it just disrupts your schedule.
