NERF THIS!

OK I'm bringing this thread out of deep hibernation because I've got some stuff that I need to add!

Strip & Adjacent:
  • Golden Steer - 308 W Sahara Ave
Old school Vegas. They make a fresh caesar salad, supposedly from Dean Martin's recipe. They also make cherries jubilee and bananas foster tableside. Flames and all, yes.
  • Del Friscos - 3925 Paradise Road
A chain steakhouse, their interior redecoration is too modern for my liking, but the steaks and sides are still on point. Save room for the butter cake.
  • Scotch 80 Prime - Palms Casino
The big draw here is their absolutely huge selection of liquors of all kinds. They actually have employees who are able to craft custom "flights" of drinks based on your preferred tastes and pocketbook.
  • Peppermill Restaurant and Lounge - 2985 Las Vegas Blvd
Garish neon, huge portions, boozy drinks by a fire pit, and did I mention garish neon? You're not really going here for the food, so much as the ambiance and experience.
  • El Dorado Cantina - 3025 S Sammy Davis Jr Dr (multiple locations)
Don't be taken aback that this place is next door to the Sapphire Gentleman's Club. El Dorado serves award-winning traditional Mexican food from different regions, and their guacamole is made fresh tableside.
  • Rollin' Smoke Barbeque - 3185 S Highland Dr (multiple locations)
Sauce-based BBQ, with six different flavors to choose from. Their meatloaf was showcased on The Travel Channel, and is very good.
  • Oyster Bar - Palace Station (multiple locations)
Hankering for gumbo or a pan roast? Check out Oyster Bar. There are multiple around town, at most Station Casinos, but the one at Palace is always open. During busy times, expect a wait of up to an hour (sometimes more) for a seat, so don't arrive super hungry.
  • Luv-It-Custard - 505 E Oakey Boulevard
Open since 1973, they have a rotating list of special custard flavors by day, and by season.
  • Arawan Thai Bistro - 953 E Sahara Ave E-14
Nowhere nearly as famous as Lotus of Siam, located in the same shopping center, Arawan offers a great selection of Thai dishes, many that can be made vegetarian/vegan as requested.
  • Biwon Korean BBQ & Sushi - 2721 W Sahara Ave Las Vegas
Ignore the sushi, go for the KBBQ. Service can be hit and miss sometimes, and the decor is a bit run down. But I'm not a social media influencer, so who cares!
  • Gangnam Asian BBQ - 4480 Paradise Rd Ste 600
As one would expect from naming the restaurant after "The Beverly Hills of Seoul", this is a slighty more fancy and upscale KBBQ joint, with the prices to match. Not going to break the bank, but more than Biwon and other KBBQ joints in town. Across the street from the Virgin Hotel (formerly Hard Rock Hotel).

Downtown & Adjacent:
  • Le Thai - 523 Fremont St.
More of a "modern" take on Thai, this place was once a weekly or twice weekly stop for me when I worked downtown. Try their Bloomin' Basil cocktail, and if you love their waterfall sauce as much as I do, you can purchase a bottle to take home with you!
  • Los Tacos - 1710 E Charleston Blvd (multiple locations)
Across the way from Tacos El Gordo, way less hectic than El Gordo, but just as tasty!
  • Gritz Cafe - 1911 Stella Lake St
Serving simple and delicious southern food since 2008.
  • Bin 702 - 707 E. Fremont, #1220 (Container Park)
Yet another monthly stop for my coworkers when we used to work downtown. A wine bar with a decent selection of beer and liquor too. They serve a nice charcuterie board, and if you're feeling particularly gluttonous, try the Flamin' Hot Cheeto sandwich.
  • Downtown Cocktail Room - 111 South Las Vegas Blvd
Open for 16 years, with a rotating seasonal menu of cocktails. Happy hour from 5-8pm Tuesday-Saturday.
  • Millenium Fandom - 4th & Hoover Ave
This is my on and off watering hole. A very comfortable and welcoming nerd bar, with an owner that happily supports the nerd/geek community here in town.

Southern Highlands/Southwest Hendertucky:
  • Michael’s Gourmet Room - South Point Casino
They've been around for well over 30 years, formerly inside the "Barbary Coast" casino on the strip. You'd have no idea this place exists inside the South Point, and stepping inside to see everyone dressed formally, with staff in tuxes, is a huge culture shock from what you see on the outside. Old school as hell, including menus with no prices listed (!?) for the women in your party. Price is a bit steep, but worth trying once.

Summerlin:
  • Marché Bacchus - 2620 Regatta Dr.
Nestled inside Desert Shores/"Three Fingers Lake" is a lovely casual French bistro. A nice spot for brunch or early dinner on their patio.
  • CJ's Italian Ice & Custard - 3555 S Durango Dr (multiple locations in town)
Quirky sense of humor, tasty custard with a hell of a lot of topping options, and custom flavors for the seasons
  • Buldogis - 2291 S. Fort Apache Rd. #102
"Gourmet" hotdog joint that infuses korean meats and toppings

Chinatown:
  • Cafe Sanuki - 4821 Spring Mountain Rd Suite G
The owners have imported udon making machinery, and attempt to recreate the tastes and flavors of Sanuki, Japan. They've trimmed back their menu a bit due to Covid, so no more oden, but the udon dishes are still excellent.

  • Hachi Yakitori Izakaya - 3410 S Jones Blvd
Open late, but busy most nights, reservations highly recommended. Parking lot is a nightmare, might have to park across the street. Never had a bad dish so far. If you're with friends, order a honey toast, it's big enough to split.
  • Hobak KBBQ - 5808 Spring Mountain Road Ste 101
Another solid KBBQ joint here in town. Hard to say what sets it apart from others. Biggest plus is they're in the same center as a lovely Korean coffee shop (listed below) if you want an after dinner coffee and pastry.
  • Gäbi Coffee & Bakery - 5808 Spring Mountain Rd Ste 104
Super cozy coffee shop with a beautiful interior blending Chosun empire decor and modern western touches.
  • Ichiza - 4355 W Spring Mountain Rd Ste 205
As far as I know, this was the first Japanese izakaya in town. A great menu of small bites on skewers to explore and expand your palette without breaking the bank.
  • Yui Edomae Sushi - 3460 Arville St. Suite# HS
Kind of tough to find, but they have the same sort of super high end tasting menu as Kabuto, with cuts and dishes rarely seen anywhere else. They also have a sake lounge and a "Chef's Table" side restaurant that concentrates on wagyu beef.

General Vegas:
  • Aloha Kitchen - Multiple locations
Hawaiian/Pacific Islander joint that has been around for at least 20+ years, can't go wrong with that.
  • Island Flavor - Multiple locations
Hawaiian joint that just started expanding in the last couple years, they have a wonderful plate of diced and fried chicken tossed in furikake sauce. You can also ask for spam-fried rice if you're feeling up for it.
  • John Mulls Meats & Roadkill Grill - 3730 Thom Blvd
Tucked inside a small residential area just off North Rancho, this place is both a butcher, a BBQ joint, and a game processor. So you could come back to town with the results of your hunt, have their staff clean and prep your kills, enjoy some great BBQ while you wait, and maybe pick up some other exotic meat on your way out the door. You know it's a good place when the lunchtime parking lot is full of utility vehicles.
  • KoMex - 633 N. Decatur Blvd Suite H
Korean/Mexican fusion. Tacos, quesadillas, bulgogi plates, you name it. Their homemade gochuchang sauce is wonderful.

Downtown Cocktail has lost some of their touch, and the regular clientele is lovely.

Cafe Sanuki is out of business.

Los Tacos is not to be mentioned in the same breath as Gordo, because they're different experiences. Gordo is for the adobada and tripas. Los Tacos is for carne asada. These can live together.

Good suggestion on Luv-its though. It's the only ice cream place I really go to. Also: stamp cards!

I've only tried Mott 32 and I think about it frequently. I can't even remember what we ordered besides the green beans and the szechuan chicken, but the latter was so delicious I probably blacked out.

You are correct- their facebook has a permanent closure announcement. Very weird, press coverage from the same time refers to it as temporary. My bad, and my condolences.

Please do! I’m partial to our Last Action Gyro pizza or the Sausage and Kale pizza. Another goon came in yesterday as well, super good time.
We also have salads, meatballs, pasta, wings, burgers.. Chef is putting out some stellar food.

Some Mike’s hot honey going on the pepperoni jalapeño NY pizza for slices…

Edit: glad to hear that Bentai!! Those wings are a real low key awesome thing, makes eating them that much easier.

Yes I did! The confit chicken wings are solid. I'm not a chicken wing fan, but everything was so well cooked that every bit of meat came cleanly off the bone. Had the spicy chili sauce, I need to try the buffalo/truffalo next time.

I have found a new burger place! Badger Cafe is a tiny, cash only stripmall place at Tropicana and Spencer. Typical breakfast/lunch diner place, mismatched mugs, that sort of thing. Shares an inner door with a dive bar and a pool hall. But the build your own burger program owns bones in all the ways. I was skeptical, but like so many great restaurants in Vegas, the sketch strip mall is actually a sign of quality. You can even get griddled pastrami on your burger which is where they had my heart.

I've been wanting to keep this thread active but finding time for online stuff is difficult these days. Still, we're heading into a week of opportunities for true debauchery, so I thought I'd speak up about them.

Saturday, May 20th: Soulbelly BBQ's 2nd Anniversary Party. Opens at 6:00. Live music. "Pig Roast Pot Luck" including Van Nguyen (595 Craft Kitchen) and Colin Fukunaga (Fuku Burger). Booze sponsor is Shiner so there'll be plenty of hydration options.

Sunday, May 21st: Picnic In the Alley - An absolutely incredible event run by and highlighting the women of the Vegas culinary scene. Eat and drink some amazing stuff and hang out with the likes of Kim Foster (Main Street Provisions), Jolene Mannina (Secretburger, VTK, etc.) and a ton of other industry pros. Dani from Jammyland will be there slinging drinks. Do not miss this if you can make it.

Wednesday, May 24th: Lambiek Fabriek On Tour at the Silver Stamp. LF is a lambic producer (shocking I know) and they've just come to the US for the first time. The Stamp is of course doing a special event - probably including special bottles, maybe even prizes and giveaways. Either way, I'm gonna post up at the bar at 1:00 and see how long I can go before my stomach lining dissolves.

Saturday, May 27th: Amaro 101 with Nick Palmeri at Khoury's Fine Wine and Spirits. 12:00-2:00. $75 ticketed event. Samples of ten (10!) amare plus cocktail tutorials/tastings. Food provided by Gaetano's Ristorante, buy-in includes a $25 Gaetano's gift certificate. The tequila event they had a couple of weeks ago was fantastic and I'm pretty sure I need to go to this one. Which is a problem because...

Sunday, May 28th: Sushi and Sake Pairing at Khoury's. 2pm-5pm, few details available but the menu includes a poke taco, blue crab maki roll, and an oyster shooter likely paired with individual sakes.

What kind of food? My shortlist:
Esther's Kitchen for the best carbonara ever, bread, neat cocktails
Raku for omakase including the best homemade tofu ever
Bazaar Meats for very spendy but excellent meaty things (tartare is a must)
Sparrow + Wolf for tweaked classics and an outstanding bar program (tartare is also a must here, whether beef, lamb, or beet)
Tacos el Gordo for really authentic TJ style tacos
Pizzeria Monzú if you want a vastly different from Yukon but excellent take on pizza, with bonus cicchetti (get the lemon leaves)
China Mama for great Chinese dumplings and some solid Sichuan classics

We can probably make some other suggestions if you're looking for something else regional or whatever.

Awesome suggestions, thanks. China Mama is looking pretty great right now since good dumplings are not something I have easy access to at home.

In general, I’ve never met a cuisine I didn’t like, and within reason, price is no object. Pretty much the only qualification for what I am looking for this trip is “not a curated, multi course culinary experience.” I’ll be working long days on my feet all day, so I want a place where I can go, order a bunch of delicious food, gorge myself and be out in under 90ish minutes.

bartolimu
Nov 25, 2002

China Mama is definitely a good choice in light of that. Unfortunately, I went to their website to check their hours (because it's really hard to get in during prime time) and it turns out they're closed "for maintenance" until further notice. So that's not great.

For non-curated multi-course experiences, I'd still suggest most of the stuff on my list. Sparrow + Wolf is mostly brought out as-ready and the duration depends on how much you order. Same for Esther's. Tacos el Gordo is the quickest pick for gorging since it's walk to counter, pay for food, sit down and feed. Monzu's service can be somewhat leisurely at times but 90 minutes is more than enough.

In lieu of China Mama I can recommend Chengdu Taste, probably the best Sichuan spot in Chinatown. For Vietnamese, District One is a less-traditional setting with good honest food (best bun bo hue I've found in town so far, outstanding green papaya salad when it's available). If you want to double down on world-class Thai (but different takes), check out Lamaii to compare with Lotus.

Dark horse candidate: Lamoon, a small-bites spot with excellent beverage selection (wines especially, some neat cocktails, lots of teas) run by the brother of the owner of Lamaii. It's a place I get to less often than I'd like.

And if you have a lunch free (or want a faster dinner), you can't go wrong with Half Bird (all sorts of chicken dishes by the Sparrow + Wolf chef) or Monta Ramen (tonkotsu with black garlic is nap-inducingly rich, best gyoza in town). Both are in Chinatown.

Doom Rooster

Amazing, thank you for the fantastic write up. The wife and I are planning on an actual personal trip by end of year, so we’ll likely hit up a lot of these spots.

Monta Ramen is probably going to be the winner for this quick work trip though. Looks great. Also can’t find a good tonkatsu here in Denver, and a few orders of gyoza will be a passable Chinese dumpling replacement.

Again, thanks so much!
