Oh poo poo it is tiiiiiiiiiiime.

Two years back I ended up getting hit by Earth Berzerker on an Upgrade run. I ended up mugging a second Bone Mail and using zombified Death Scythe wielders to heal against Neo Exdeath. It was a bad experience.

:toxx: I will clear at least two runs this year. :toxx:

I decided last year that I wanted to try out all of the regular jobs in a single summer, and so I did it over the course of five runs. It was a blast, and now I want to encourage you to do the same thing. For everyone who uses all twenty regular jobs (i.e., those you have access to before world 3), I'll donate $20 and match your job fair expenses up to the total price of one of each job. Any kind of run is fine except for #fifthjob or some other mode that has you using more than four jobs in a single playthrough.

If you're going to do this, I suggest that you plan ahead a bit. This is going to take at least five runs, and you don't want the last one to be something like Monk/Berserker/Geomancer/Dragoon.

So I've been doing some planning, and I have this set as a decent path:

Run 1 (Zerker Risk) - Blue Mage, Berserker, Monk, Beastmaster

Blue Mage gives the all powerful !Blue, Berserker because Berserker Risk, Monk to both get it out of the way early and to use their massive HP to pump up White Wind, and Beastmaster to get all the support spells.

Run 2 - White Mage, Mystic Knight, Ranger, Dragoon

White Mage for heals, Mystic Knight and Ranger for Spellblade Rapid Fire, and Dragoon as filler. You get Holy right before Omniscient at Fork Tower, so I have offensive magic for that fight.

Run 3 - Chemist, Knight, Ninja, Bard

Chemist has !Mix, Knight is a beatstick, Ninja gives AoE damage with scrolls plus can take !Equip Swords for more damage, Bard can sit back and buff speed. Do offensive Mixes count as magic for Omniscient? If not, just throw dual wielded Mage Mashers at him and fish for silence procs.

Run 4 - Red Mage, Black Mage, Thief, Samurai

Red Mage brings a bit of healing with dualcast Cura and can run !Black, Black Mage gets to dualcast all day long, Thief exists, and Samurai throws money away.

Run 5- Summoner, Geomancer, Dancer, Time Mage

Summoner means perpetual motion with Phoenix' full HP/MP revives, Geomancer stops field damage, Dancer gets to dance with the Chicken Knife, and Time Mage gives a pittance of early healing with Regen while giving an easy triple crown.

My main focus is giving every run some source of non-item healing, plus giving them some way to do everything in the game.

Also, for those of you who are planning runs, I'd recommend thinking about how you're going to get past world 2 Exdeath as well as the late game. That's a tough fight and you don't have superpowers yet.

Grind at Barrier Tower till I get a full set of Reflect Rings.

Popular is weighted towards The Run votes, yes. As it stands, you'd be most likely to roll White Mage and will almost never pull Mystic Knight.

If you roll a job you don't have in Chaos/Pure Chaos, you just go without until you hit the relevant crystal. If you get Bard on Wind and Black Mage on Water, you run all Freelancer until Water, at which point you go four Black Mage until you hit the Fire crystal. Welp, I went through on my ill-advised plan to run Normal Upgrade, mainly because I never got elucidation from that one person who did it and hated it. I rolled Thief and so far it's...OK? I hear so much about Thief being awful, and it's certainly tougher than Black Mage for sure, but far from impossible. Of course, I'm not at Garula yet, and I'm not sure how much grinding is necessary to make that doable, I just remember that some enemy in the tower has the next tier of knives.

What really caught me off guard is that apparently you can't buy knives before the graveyard, so I was just stuck hoping that the skeletons would drop daggers. Given that I am doing upgrade, it seems like thieves are one of the better ones to roll since you get access to their main important abilities relatively quickly. It's also the only mode where earning those abilities even matters, since otherwise you have access to them all the time via your native thief.

For the love of god, save upgrading to Water until after Sandworm.

If you pull Berserker as your water job you will be forced to quadzerk him. It will be a very bad time.

Run 2 down, with an easy TC.

Mystic Knight + Ranger meant both Shinryu and Omega died in only a handful of hits, (getting said hits being easier said than done) White Mage let me sandbag a lot of stuff and could toss out a 5K damage Holy if everyone was topped up, and Dragoon did an admirable job as a !White toting healbot.

Amusingly enough, NED couldn't get off a single Almagest or Grand Cross before I killed their respective parts.

I tried Omega (with Blue/Time/Bard/Cannoneer) and.. nah, not going to bother with a triple crown. Probably, unless I can do it without going out of my way too much. Stun locking the guy with Romeo's Ballad is a neat trick, but then I'm left with a "then what?" I could go Hastega and keep using Romeo's Ballad and have someone else keep Hero's Rime going to get my party up to level 99 and then... something, or maybe go get 1000 Needles and cast it a billion times. Or lightning rods.

Quick is neat. I don't seem to have a good way to deal with KOed party members, except Quick > Phoenix Down > heal (White Wind etc). Quick > Vampire > White Wind works pretty well too. I have to rely on rods for elemental damage all around though.

If you have several hours to kill, give one person a Reflect Ring, then break a Poison Rod on them to nail Omega (and pretty much anything else) with Sap. Cast Quick and wait for his HP to burn out at a rate of 2hp per tick.

Rolling Time Mage is the easiest triple crown, but good luck sitting around waiting for Sap to do the work.

Run 3: Knight, Thief, Ninja, Chemist

Power Rod, followed by slowly plinking him to death while using !Image and the Genji Shield. Easy.

Hit him with Kiss of Blessing, then cover cheesed all his attacks while slowly chipping him down Scrolls for 2K a hit. Probably should have put Knight in the back to reduce damage if a hit came through between Guards (the added Haste on Kiss of Blessing is a bitch) but by the time I noticed I did not have the turns needed to swap rows.

Thanks, Enkibot.

Admittedly, I could have routed things out so that Ninja and Chemist had a magic job to back them up and boost scrolls/mixes, but Chemist can solo a run as it and I needed Knight/Thief/Ninja for a very important mission:

None more than Neo Shinryu, who took me a few attempts. His insane speed (double-turning hasted characters) and varied attack pattern made it very hard to react. I initially tried !Combine for Slow Cannon, but Slow doesn't seem to really do anything in the fight, which makes me assume that every time Neo Shinryu switches from vulnerable to invulnerable, he loses the debuff. So I went with four Mixers instead. Once you have all buffs in place, it's just a matter of keeping your health up. The Force Shield was a great help too, until the dragon switched to physical attacks, at which point the Genji Shield and Mini combo guaranteed victory.

The thing is that Neo Shinryu is made of three parts; the part that you actually attack, the part that exists to eat Rapid Fire hits, and the part that attacks you.

It looked like Slow does nothing because while the part you attack is vulnerable to it, the part that actually attacks couldn't give less of a poo poo.

Everyone else was running X-Magic to either dual cast Firaga, (with the Black Mage) or dual cast Raise to keep up with the onslaught. The Samurai had just enough bulk to survive a hit plus Mini to boost evade to try and bait hits.

Stalled out Treedeath until he ran out of MP, then stalled while the Bard and Samurai sang me up to max level and speed. At which point I butchered NED with dualcast Firagas and Gil Toss while the Bard (who was stuck with !Hide to stall) and Red Mage (who was running X-Magic to quickly recover after stalling) offered moral support.

Monk, despite not being awesome has the ability to have a gently caress-ton of hp to survive as item dude. Beastmaster is one that I haven't really done much with to be honest, so I'm guessing most of the funny business will have to come from him.

If you're playing on GBA you can use Beastmaster's !Calm to stoplock Omega, with Thundaga Spellblade to hurt him.

Shinryu you'll want to !Catch a Mammon and Galajelly at the Great Forest. Mammon inflicts Berserk while Galajelly inflicts Darkness. Note that the Great Forest is a one off visit, so you'll have to catch them in W2 and carry them all the way to the Void.

The Bard tries to keep Mighty Song up for Regen and dispels, while the dancer dances with both spamming cure 2 and Raise most of the fight. What usually happens is that someone dies to a vacuum wave near the end when Exdeath starts spamming multiple attacks, and it falls apart quickly after that.

Am I just going to have to keep grinding some more levels until my Dancer and Bard can survive a vacuum wave? I do have 2 elvin mantles equipped, and they seem to help, but eventually something gets through.

This won't be of any help now, but a team comp like that would have loved grinding out a full set of Reflect Rings at Barrier Tower.

Goons, help! I'm at the finish line of my run, facing down Neo Exdeath and have hit a solid wall. This is my first time through the game, so it's been a blast and I've tried to mostly play it blind (although I did use a walkthrough to find the Phantom Village and to figure out the best equipment for my classes)

My classes are: Thief, Red Mage, Ranger, Dancer. All around level 40. I did most of the endgame quests even though I couldn't use most of the rewards.

My strategy through most of the endgame has relied on my Dancer's Sword Dance with a maxed out Chicken Knife, with everyone else as support. As soon as Neo Exdeath comes out I immediately kill one of his forms with the Magic Lamp and Odin. Then while Sword Dance hits Neo Exdeath for 9999 damage, even if I get it to proc three or four times on the Dragon Head Almagest section, there's no way I've been able to do enough damage to it kill it before it casts Almagest. Almagest wipes my party, and I haven't found a combination of equipment yet that'll get even one guy to survive it.

I need to either find a way to make one of the other three make up the other 20,000 damage or so before Almagest is first cast, or find a way to survive it once, and that's assuming there aren't any other nasty surprises waiting.

With time running out for the fiesta, is my only option to grind like crazy? Or is there some tactical wizardry that may give me a chance?

You'll want to rely more Ranger's Rapidfire rather than Dance, you'll have to deal with RNG targeting but will reliably deal more damage overall.

Fork Tower has the Wonder Rod, which cycles through all white and black magic when swung. Pushing it to Shell before fighting NED will let someone survive Almagest. If they have Dualcast on, you can then have them raise two people at once.
