I've only had one notably bad experience thusfar and it was a very weird one. I hopped on a team to do the Manticore TF with another friend, and the first red flag was that the dude (a tanker, naturally) was stressing about nothing having 'enough heals' for fighting 6 missions worth of Crey, noted punching bags. He was really controlling about pulling/'herding' mobs around corners and poo poo while I, as a Brute and facepunching enthusiast, chose to run ahead and get to work polishing off some stuff to make the Defeat All missions go quicker. Then the weird dude sends me a tell informing me this is my 'second warning', to which I tell him to politely gently caress off and promptly drop group to go elsewhere shortly thereafter. I don't think I ever saw anyone like that ever on the Live servers, but I'm glad that these mystical control freak tanks who suck at the game are still out there in the wild.

My go-to "gently caress this, I'm not trying and everything dies NOW" toon is my TW/ELE Brute. Tanker won't kill anything. Scrapper will kill better but that 15% difference in resistance caps IS noticeable. Also, gently caress runners.

Speaking of this, I had some weird pubbie give dumb advice about how 90% vs 75% resist "didn't matter for real content" or some inane garbage like that when I was giving build/archetype advice to pubbies. The man genuinely seemed to just ignore the fact that each % of defense/resist you get is worth more than the last because of what I presume is Scrapper-brain :psyduck:

I'd probably put Energy Melee at the bottom because it has no AOE and its Single Target is 'Decent' which is not ideal for a game where you often fight multiple foes.

I think it's because the rage change was a bugfix technically, but at this point avoiding the Def crash was a feature.

FWIW I regularly bang the drum on the Homecoming servers demanding buffs to Energy Melee. Even just giving it direct number buffs would be enough to get the set seeing regular play as an ST specialist, and my dream is for Whirling Hands to be more than just a pile of poo poo.

Oppressive Gloom is pretty much free to run and Cardiac Alpha being a natural combination for Dark Armor really solves most of its end problems unless you're having to slam Dark Regen on cooldown. The biggest knock against DA is that endgame enemies are something like 70% energy damage by volume since every dullard in existence has access to some kind of laser rifle or energy beam. It definitely wants some Slow Resistance from IO sets if you plan on fighting psionic enemies though, otherwise the -Rech will put Dark Regen into a cooldown of like 1 minute from people beaming hot takes into your brain.

Slag Golems (and their bigger brothers, the Arachnoids) mostly draw their strength from their extremely spammable and *extremely* potent -Def powers on virtually all of their attacks. Very few ATs, much less powersets, in the game can contend with being hit by 80%+ of an enemy group's arsenal at all times in their early 20s, and turning things up to x8 even with a group was rolling the dice for how many people die to their initial alpha strike.

Arachnoids up the ante by doing bucketlods of Toxic damage and layering generous amounts of -Rech on all of their bullshit too. The bosses also get hold powers, but that's nothing compared to the absolute litany of garbage that Arachnoids can drop on players. I'm pretty sure they could go toe-to-toe with some Praetorian groups.

A better design would probably have Heroes & Villains with different goals in the same place. Heroes get rewarded based on how many villains they can defeat, and villains get theirs based on how much stuff they can steal from the city. Maybe give them a small thing for beating up on Heroes too, but have it structured so they're trying to smash & grab as hard as possible.

IIRC Merits only get rewarded for completing a Story Arc of some kind, even 1-mission ones. Random paper missions do not reward any merits.

Yeah, near as I can tell Tankers are just way better across the board and make a bucketload of powers crazy strong with the 50% Range/Radius boost they get now. Frost is gigantic and Repulsing Torrent from Kin. Melee hits entire hallways.

Yeah CoXG is the one to avoid because it's packed to the gills with the kinds of people who'd get banned from GBS on here. I'd give them a year before their population consists of neonazi-adjacent individuals by virtue of anyone with a normal brain having left since they won't do anything about Goosestep Greg talking about the Great Replacement theory or w/e.

As someone who has played a lot of Dual Blades stalker, do not play a Dual Blades stalker. It's kind of rear end. It works far better on other melee ATs - it doesn't mesh well.

As someone who actively plays Dual Blades Stalker, do play one instead. It hits insanely hard with its attack chain and 1k Cuts gets a range bonus on Stalkers for no discernable reason, making it go from 'bad' to 'passable'. Also you get to trade out Blinding Feint for a constantly resetting Build Up that lets you one-shot lieutenants with Sweeping Strike.

Sweeping strike hits as hard as many ST attacks and it cleaves for free. Ablating is an A+ attack as well, then you just pick a T1 or 2 filler for your ST chain on Stalker DB

I personally find Kinetics to be grossly underpowered on Masterminds since they go from being a two-trick pony to a (sad, boring and small) one-trick with only Fulcrum Shift working on their minions. You can technically try and use your other powers to boost them up, but I honestly I have no idea what the point of proliferating that set to MM was supposed to do besides make people want to play MMs even less by accidentally picking it.

DangerDan
May 31, 2011

FULTON: The Freshmaker
They do work on MMs, but Speed Boost does absolutely nothing besides giving them movement speed. That means all you have is Fulcrum Shift to bolster your bets, which you don't get until 38 so in turn you'll get your rear end beat by anything you engage for the first 37 levels assuming you don't powerlevel. Getting mileage out of the heal for Kinetics needs a level of micro vs. ranged enemies that I would not wish upon anyone.

DangerDan

Yeah part of my huge shittalking of Kinetics MM is a friend I introduced to the game did Beasts/Kinetics to start because that sounded really funny to him (superspeed dogs mauling people!!!) and in practice his minions just died all the time to basically anything on larger groups and he wound up rerolling to Demons/Something Not Kinetics.

I'd also be all for Fulcrum Shift having an actual cooldown and other parts of its kit having a purpose (Siphon Power being obsoleted by its own powerset is pretty lol, Siphon Speed is mediocre since Kinetics has 0 actual cooldowns to begin with) but when Homecoming tried to give Dark Melee an actual AOE power to replace one of its many MANY dogshit garbage launch-era clunkers, people got mad and said it was overpowered so they reverted it entirely. Narrator voice: it wasn't.

I mean, I'd chalk that up to Beast Summoning being subpar more than Kinetics being stinky. Frankly all of the melee-centric MM sets aside from Demons could use another look, if only to cut down on how obnoxiously easy it is for the minions to take one bad attack and evaporate. I guess Necro isn't so bad, I feel like that set has slightly different issues. Ninjas and Beasts though...ugh.

IIRC Necro has something similar to the Assault Bot from Robotics where if you give the Grave Knights one of their upgrades, they start dealing less damage because they begin using a skill that sucks a lot of poo poo or something. One of my friends is a True MM Murderhead and kvetches endlessly to me about their shortcomings, and that was one of them for Necro. They're still better than Mercs who are just bad at everything though!

I too have noticed how many Denizens of the D basically reuse the same tropes from years ago. Even the huge goofy-rear end thing where every 4 out of 5 people inform you that psychics reading their mind get Tupac on loop or something.

Edit: that would actually own, its always something like The Screams Of 1000 Damned Souls in the brain of this Captain America knockoff with the hero hair.

VtM people were huge back on Live because at least three different circles of role-playing folks I hung out with either had or were adjacent to Masquerade vampire folks.

The strangest bit to me was how nearly all of them were apparently translating the setting over 1:1 as best they could which involved their vampirism being super duper secret even though that's an extremely banal fact in the CoH world. Cabal of vampires in the city!? Okay, but which one?

What I've learned is that the most powerful and influential people for HC development are hosed up forums posters who use dogshit mag 3 CC powers with a 7 second duration in their day to day gameplay. It's why the first draft of Dark Melee's overhaul got shuttered because two prolific posters whined that Touch of Fear being removed meant their Dark/Dark Brutes couldn't fear bosses anymore.

I'm eager to see when they try to touch up Kin Melee and a new type of guy who loves Concentrated Strike being on par with aT2 power (or worse in the case of Stalkers, lmao) leaping in to stop them from giving it real damage numbers.

Yeah, Thunderspy I remember had a big thing about All Speech is Free Speech when they first formed which is why I never had any interest in the server despite the neat things they apparently did on it from a design standpoint. I'll take the HC community banning people who spew racist garbage out or other extremely uncool things over the 'nazis have feelings too' crowd.
