My Gold Star survivors Facebook group is kicking up into high gear. Apparently the Senate Armed Services Committee's markup for the 2020 NDAA did not include repealing the SBP-DIC offset. They're considering this a bad omen and they're hoping the House does include it in theirs.

The general feeling is that passing a repeal of the offset would be easier if it's part of the NDAA as opposed to a stand-alone bill, and I see their point.

On the other hand, I'm wondering if maybe the word on the grapevine within Congress is that the standalone bill will actually make it through and so including it in the NDAA is unnecessary? The Senate bill has 72 cosponsors and the House bill is trudging its way to a floor vote sometime in mid-July. Given both bills are identically worded, barring any Congressional fuckery (and I expect there to be Congressional fuckery) it should clear the Senate after passing the House.

Graaaaahhhhh, loving Congress.

Here's Sisolak signing the latest laws. My friend is one of the people in the back.

Senate Bill 179, the Trust Nevada Women Act, repeals what the Governor calls outdated criminal penalties for abortion, and aligns "antiquated informed consent laws with today’s medical standards."

Senate Bill 94 allocates $6 million for statewide family planning grants, funding a recommendation he made in his budget.

Someone with more knowledge about the process reports that if it's in the mark-ups then funding for it would have to come from retired pay or Tricare. Adding it as an amendment later allows them to identify a separate funding source.

I'm talking about McNally's thing BTW. 72 senate cosponsors screams "overwhelming support" to me. Unless there's some vocal group opposed to it because of "fiscal responsibility" or something.

Politicians don't like paying for the results of wars. There's a bottomless pit of deficit spending available for military equipment, soldiers, and contractors. But once the person leaves military service, Congress no longer sees it as their problem, no matter how the person leaves their service.

Because that isn't the point.

You can do your best to consume ethically, but at the end of the day, you're going to end up exploiting someone under capitalism.

You shouldn't beat yourself up about the inherently exploitative system thrust upon you.
