I ended up listening to "It Could Happen Here" this week, which is a former Cracked writer trying to predict what a new US civil war would look like.

It was fine, but I mostly finished it to figure out what goes on in the mind of a self-described leftist who views the Ukrainian Maidan protesters and Syrian FSA militias as examples to emulate.

Cracked for a while was a more "respectable" version of Vice, to the point they would happily have listicle interviews having a Pakistani doc happily talking about the CIA Polio vaccine ordeal or have a Guantanamo worker talk on how well they treat their prisoners, so it's somewhat understandable that the people that came from there would go on to produce docs like that.

The best boon the former writers for Cracked ever had was the website deciding to remove a part of their writing to be more advertisement friendly, so they could happily rebrand themselves as DSA-types without having to worry about their name being googled and let's say, finding a piece on how modern LGBTQ people are too mean about Reagan letting the AIDS crisis explode or a piece on how lawmakers who make life worse for rape victims isn't a big deal.

Amber is messed up on a bunch of ways but in terms of trans issues she's closer to the Sonicfox crowd on it, from listening to the few times she talked about that sort of stuff.

To be frank I find it kinda silly to go "Why would someone with a history of left-wing history entertain right wing ordeals be dismissed". Perhaps I'm saying this from somewhere that has seen former Carnation Revolution participants and Left Wing party founders go on Centre-Right orgs to argue for Right causes under the guise of "As someone who has faught actual fascism, IIII", which included arguing against nearly every strike, strangling Venezuela even more and supporting the Libyan War (Even as European MEPs and on Portuguese government places), all done under the banner of "I'm being open minded and pragmatic, why is the left being a baby about this". You could make a similar case for Eldridge Cleaver or Patrick Moore.

I think the way she decided to do that is because she became big and respected enough to be this omnibus where she can introduce other figures that her corner of the web and followship may not be familiar with. She probably saw Buck and went "oh yea i guess you probably have words to say about it as a trans figure of note, also you've got poo poo from online, no I won't look at why" at him and he happily went there. (Which might be a tad more pleasant than his current twitter career)

Mind you a good part of this is treating as "oh, why is this a bad thing in the first place, this is too online" and for that I wish I could drag these people to Portuguese coverage of US elections to show what they sound like.

everyone points out "amber defenders" but all of the same people would also be calling you idiots if you were posting dumb and made up poo poo about will or Matt or Felix, for some reason despite having nearly identical politics and problematic associations all of the hatred and vitriol gets aimed at Amber though 🤔

That would only make sense if the other Chapos were as profilic on writing on a serious tone for other publications as her. If, let's say, Will Menaker went around on publications talking about the issues facing the left as a figure of authority on it, he would get as much poo poo! I can find her writing printed here and translated, and I heavily suspect she was behind that Financial Times piece praising the left wing coalition that our press shat their pants about for weeks a few months ago.

Now that I have my hand on the baking dough: I do have a problem with something she wrote recently: On her piece on why Busytown likes Bernie, she pairs Graphical Designers (in particular freelance types) with like heads of NgOs and such. Ok, then why do I, every few days or so, get frenetic adverts on my feed for artists and such telling they really need commissions desperatly for rent and grocery money?

Ok is Pod Save America having right now some sort of marketing push in Europe? I've had at least several publications here do a "Catch-all of podcasts" and the only US "Essential" one being talked about is theirs. I don't mean like they're recommended along with let's say any of the McElroy ones or whatever. I mean on the sense its the only one being recommended that's US based.

It's bizarre because... I can go to more fancy magazine places and see Amber published there, but no peep about every other single pod, left or right or "apolitical".

Cafe Dot Com, as part of the Digger thing, yes. But I wouldn't say it's intelligence connected.

Cracked however? For years they used to host articles defending stuff like the Mujanhadeen aid , the fake Polio Immunization campaign and Reagan letting the AIDS crisis explode. The biggest boon former writers had from Cracked dying was the new investors deleting from the archives nearly every weird article like that so no one can bring that up during one of their threads or something on twitter. I wouldn't be surprised if part of why John Cheese's position was kept for that long was due to some spook keeping tabs on the site for "Hello, here's 5 things as a totally liberal waifish hipstery gal from Eastern Europe wants to tell you about why Azov Battalion is actually woke" pieces to keep rolling.

There was a good reason why let's say, Splinter and Gawker and Deadspin were mourned while Cracked just faded away, currently on a Escapist-style husk being entirely held by Seanbaby's occasional piece there. IT was a different time what with people centering way, way more on a lady's occasional writing on feminism than let's say, the piece where they taunted the Australian Government for not murdering every Sentilense or the John Cheese bit where he devotes part of a "Here's how to spot Fake News" article to poo poo on people worried about destroyed and covered up rape kits to go on how that's not a concern of the working class.

There's like also a side on this on which you have initially not very bodily active comedic actors having outright huge transformations of getting jacked up to hell for movie roles and elaborating on Instagram that yes they required an absurd investment of both money and lifestyle to get to that point and some twitter person summing that up with "Yes, there's a certain level of able and monetary privilege to get to that point, specially at that starting point" only to get jumped on by dipshits screaming on how much this harms the left and reposting the exact same posts they were quoting as these huge owns.

Also it's important in, let's say, shaping how voters in other countries keep up with matters, which in turn shapes those policies. I know Boris is now being embraced by the Portuguese News Media as this lovable and gratuitous figure for his NHS message, which was only aided by the UK Press apparatus being so dismissive of issues that one would see the access from those news orgs get shut down as soon any leveled criticism here, including the whole "kicking out a lot of people that would later become referred to as essential work".

COVID-19 won't certainly help with that, making reports being far more local/national and thus far, far less scrutiny involved in discussing these matters.

There are other resolutions, but "chunked" is the max one, second is the default one and I'm somewhat sure you can just put 160p,360p,480p in lieu of "chunked" in case you want lower resolutions

Yeah the reason why Matt's thing on E1 got to me wasn't even "How dare he criticize a Chapo-adjacent franchise", it's more that he's fully cognizant that the kind of stream performance that they wanted is not something he'd be able to deliver and similar situations have eaten him inside. Specially an event for fundraising.

I do however think that one of his neighbors should call him a dork mid-stream at some point.

really i think they just really respect the amount of work clearly put into this thing

It's also the plot of a 30 year old metal album.
