God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. Who will wipe this blood off us? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we need to invent?

I'm on episode 19 of 60 or so of "revolutions" podcast about the French revolution. I find it really interesting and the host is pretty ok too. I'll probably jump around in order of interest/lack of knowledge. Shoutout to whoever the goon was that recommended it in some cspam thread a couple weeks ago.

street fight i enjoy like I would a call in radio show (I used to love them and would gently caress around with Boston's FM talk station back when I worked third shift weekends). They call in shows are long and cover my entire commute round trip, so that's nice too.

hell of a way to die is on regular rotation for me, and citations needed is great so far though I've only started listening to it recently

I really recommend going in order through Revolutions, things tend to lead into each other. Like, the French revolution specifcally plays into the next...five(?) pretty heavily

at least don't skip Haiti, because it rules hard. there's a point towards the end of it where Mike starts editorializing about how the other revolutions cloaked themselves in flowery, liberal rhetoric about freedom and equality meanwhile the Haitians are goddamned slaves throwing off their shackles. actual liberation, none of this "boohoo my taxes" bullshit

thanks for the heads up. I'm definitely not gonna skip haiti. I've been on a Caribbean history kick the last year or so and i love Haiti's revolution as much as I hate how badly they were hamstrung by reparations after the fact.

im hoping to get the french portion before ihave to go to Paris for work next week and then do lsd in the catacombs

haiti owns in general. france can go gently caress themselves for saying "pay us all the money and we won't re-invade" while the US can for essentially being their second colonial power

dont be so harsh on the u.s. it's not like the country invaded Haiti and absconded with all of their gold reserves or something lmao and then occupied the place for a couple decades

oh wait they definitely did that lmao the monroe doctrine can eat a dick and so can invading sovereign countries to protect "business interests"

wars, history, current events. there might be better podcasts for those specific topics but RWN is more holistically informative. they contextualize everything to the present in a way that makes sense to a left wing sensibility.

you can check out their episode previews. it’s been a while since they posted a free episode, but there’s a big backlog of those too.

the rural midwest used to be cool. it was full of unions and socialists and nice people. now it's a place where you can still buy a house for the price of a honda accord, but everyone is broke and getting broker and, in my experience, hates anyone for trying to improve things.

i grew up poor in rural iowa, but there were your normal "rich" kids with parents who ran manufacturing places. now my hometown is so poor they don't even bother to do cursory income checks to see if your family qualifies for free lunch - every kid just eats for free now.

dollar general and family dollar are probably the biggest employers outside the local school and hospital systems. when my parents die, i don't know what ill do with their house. sell it for $40 grand and split the money four ways, i guess? if i can get that much down the road? the population has only shrunk since 1950, and no one is having kids, so who needs a big victorian house?
