What a Hell of a Way to Die: a couple of lefty vets, Francis and Nate (who also co-hosts Trashfuture) cover current events and military news. They also share stories and talk about military culture and are very good at explaining things for non-military knowledgeable people. https://soundcloud.com/hellofawaytodie

Finkelstein's book is fantastic, by the way.

“The telling thing is, after slogging through Remnick’s 600-page tome, the reader isn’t a whit the wiser where Obama stood on anything or what he stood for. If the book parses not his policy but, instead, his prose, not his substance but, instead, his speeches, that’s because Obama couldn’t claim ownership of a single distinctive policy. When he set out on the presidential campaign trail, Obama wasn’t driven by a core message, a specific policy agenda to which he was wedded, that was then amplified by the hype engulfing him. On the contrary, he was hype in search of a core. His campaign manager, Plouffe, enumerated as among the first tasks confronting him, to “flesh out our core message and provide some substance—like health care and energy plans—to go along with the hype.” The “core” message distilled by Obama’s campaign team—in particular, strategist David Axelrod—could have been lifted from a Democratic Party primer; it was as daring as walking a tightrope one inch off the ground."

It's funny, because he echos so many things Christman has said during the Bernie campaign and after, but during the interview Matt was totally mute.

I feel like a lot of people become addicted to the sort of "mass affirmation" you can receive online if you talk about your traumas.

It's basically like Munchausen's, where people need to keep making stuff up to get that sweet dose of positive attention/sympathy. It's particularly insidious because the stuff they complain about actually does happen to other people, who could often use the positive attention/advice (and unlike in real life, it's often hard to falsify their claims).

edit: Like you mention, the best option is to just ignore people who do this.

felix made a pretty good observation of this one time: because being a victim online garners you sympathy, the way the online cadence works and the way people people post, it's all convergent and it's done in the most simpering, quivering manner possible "i'm huge pussy, you cannot get mad at me". everyone does this now.

"World History hurts my feefees and since we collectively can't do anything about it or Systemic Discrimination, delusional, outright Reactionary revisionist history is ok" (wrt to the previous episode referring to PragerU teaching Lost Cause garbage to students).

"Our current dumb loving country is making GBS threads out tragedy after tragedy and since we're currently powerless to do anything about it its just misery porn not worth even acknowledging"

These are dumbest takes I've seen in a while and frankly its honestly infuriating the more I think about it. It's just so intellectually cowardly to me that the only way some people people here cope is by getting mad at other people for acknowledging the world literally and proverbially being on loving fire

Ytlaya posted:

The one thing I disagree with here is that the Democrats would do better with any other nominee. Despite low approval, I'm pretty sure Biden would still do better than any other possible Democratic nominee.

The main reason for this is that, more than approval, I think the biggest factor is "how much the politician is hated by 'independents' and Republicans" (since partisan Democrats are voting for him regardless and - just like their Republican counterparts - are mostly motivated by antipathy towards the other party). And Biden simply isn't someone who inspires much hate - he mostly just inspires ambivalence. It's why they have to focus so much on Hunter. But if you got someone like Kamala or something, it'd be very easy to spin up the right-wing rage machine against her (for a variety of reasons).

edit: I think Democrats are likely to win the presidential election simply because either 1. (if Trump runs) Trump inspires more hate in Democrats than Biden inspires in Republicans, or 2. (if Trump doesn't run) the Republicans have literally no one else who is remotely popular.

matt's point was that these libs that keep yelling that if trump gets re-elected it's a "real danger to democracy and should be taken seriously" while also simultaneously freaking out at biden's sub-40% approval ratings then why aren't these dipshit libtards annoying people that can actually do something about it instead getting mad at people pointing out that poo poo still sucks right now. if the priority is keeping trump out of office then they should be doing literally anything else besides freaking out at people online.

either they don't actually believe it and they're full of poo poo or they just love to get off scolding people for not being enthusiastic enough
