Speaking of Secret of Mana: isn't there a spot in the game where you can get infinite orbs for a weapon?

I streamed Secret of Mana co-op a few years back (which was a beautiful, hilarious trainwreck), and that game's second half is absolutely unfinished.

Did the remake fix any of this, or is it just a re-skin of the entire old game?

The biggest issues with SoM:

- the ungodly amount of time it takes to grind magic, to a lesser extent, weapons.
- combat is repetitive, holding down an attack button to charge only for you to whiff because you didn’t quite hit an undefined hitbox is annoying as heck.
- your allies getting stuck by walls. All the time. And you can’t continue till they clear the wall. Thank god Trials fixed this.
- the aforementioned second half being incomplete.

The only thing Secret does better than Trials is magic casting, Trials stopping combat for the spell to go off kind of gets annoying after awhile. Despite all its issues, Secret of Mana still was one of the first games that did co-op adventure RPG right and I love it for that.

Oh, I just did a play through and got to the mana holy land then my save got corrupted because I saved in a bad spot (Neko’s in the ice land) :rip:

I remember Secret feeling like a repetitive grind after a bit. That, and whatever magic trick you use to defeat the final boss (cast some spell on the boy’s sword?), I couldn’t get it to work. I was playing emulated, no clue if that was a factor. I beat that game by using a game genie code that auto killed all the enemies. gently caress you, Square, you didn’t finish your game right, neither will I.

Secret of Mana is so beautiful though. The pixel art is just aesthetically perfect. That remake looks like warm generic anime garbage and should feel bad about it.

You gotta have the girl and Sprite cast mana magic on him to unlock the Mana Sword. It's a dryad spell and most people don't level dryad up long enough to make the spell last awhile.

I'm happy Angela will be useful for once. I'm in the midst of a playthrough using Angela, Kevin and Hawk and her damage output is... really bad. Use a claw on Kevin to give him an x saber, and in beast form his 2 hits do more damage than one of her spells that the boss is weak to.

I was trying to think what the highest DPS team would be, which includes black market items. Obviously you have Hawkeye (likely as a Nightblade) and Kevin (God Hand) and maybe Duran as a Paladin? Thought is, use items for attack up / non-light dark sabers, Hawk starts with deadly weapon then uses jutsus for stat downs, Duran for Saint Saber for all the dark enemies, then poto oils for healing.

Angela’s damage output just isn’t that great when her spells take awhile to cast and 2 hits from a gold wolf Kevin with attack up is gonna equate that damage.

For the remake I'll probably go with Duran/Angela/Kevin. I don't use Kevin that often when he's not my main character and I like Duran/Angela's story the most. Duran's whole motivation of getting stronger to beat a wizard who whooped him once is nice and refreshingly straightforward.

Kevin's story is basically JRPG John Wick. Right down to him struggling to say his lines.

Finally got around to playing the demo, and I have thoughts:

- really does feel like a completely different game. The areas have newer layouts, and don't seem as maze like.
- the combat flow is great. You just kind of weave in and out, and it doesn't feel slow at all. It'll take some getting used to adding jumping to the mix though.
- good lord the load times are awful, and I have a hybrid drive.

The PS4 version is in 4k (if you have a pro obvs) if any of you are deciding between that and the Switch version if you don't care for mobility.

She gets a spell early on (when you get the first spirit) which is nice but yeah her and Charlotte have an annoying start to their game.

Angela / Hawkeye / Riesz would be a fun party if it weren't for the no heals aspect.

Edit: it appears as long as you have the prerequisite stat filled, as you unlock spirits their magic becomes automatically available to you as opposed to waiting to level up, which is cool.

Wow, a combo of DD Kevin, LD Riesz and DD Charlotte has made the benevodons a walk in the park. Start with strength up from Riesz, dark curse from Charlotte then throw an elemental claw on Kevin and use his crit booster and he just wails on enemies. Light attacks do about 300hp while heavies hit for 600. His #2 tech lands for about 4500hp too.

The only one that gave a bit of annoyance was Xan Bie, only because it disappears a lot during the battle and will lose its afflictions.

Theres a place during that stretch of game where if you save there it corrupts your save. Its Neko's in the Ice Fields. Lost a save that way :(

Well I think I just found the perfect trash mobs murder team post game. Kevin, Charlotte and Riesz, after class 4 spheres and their chain abilities, plus the lil cactus chain ability means you'll go into each battle adding 200% of your CS gauge. I have Kevin use Seiryu Strike immediately and that almost always kills all enemies. If not, Riesz will use Seraph which finishes everyone off. After the battle, the chain abilities I have set up refill the CS gauge a bit and refill all my MP.

I think I've come to the conclusion after a couple playthroughs of the best party:

Kevin DD, Charlotte DD, Angela LL

Kevin will wreck everything with the immense strength he has (also Seiryu strike will clear trash mobs quickly), as well Angela, and Charlotte can use dark curse as well as heal when necessary (and her summons aren't bad either). Stat up and sabers can be utilized with items, making Riesz and Duran obsolete. You COULD swap Charlotte for Hawkeye for more damage and use his jutsus for stat downs and stick to poto oil for healing (or make Kevin go light), but the amount of damage you're doing from Angela and Kevin will burn everything quickly, and one cast from dark curse is a hell of a lot faster.

That said, this game isn't that hard so really any type of party is gonna work just fine. I'd have to wonder what the "worst" party would be.

She was great as a CS spam machine until the postgame with a STR/SPI/INT build, then she fell off hard in the post game.

Admittedly that's because D Hawkeye is outputting Angela numbers between his debuffs, Riesz buffs, and all the ninjutsu booster passives, but still.

My Riesz would spam Seraph a bunch during fights, which works pretty well. Her final light class 4 gets a CS ability that does MP turbo for summon fights, which you can offset with various MP regeneration abilities.
