Let's Go is a no-brainer to book for AGDQ with all the goofy donation incentives they floated as possibilities during the run. Bid war for which Pokémon to ride. Bid war for Helix or Dome fossil. Bid war for what they use the Master Ball on.

EDIT: I am going back through VODs of runs I missed and holy poo poo the crowd is horny for this Sonic Adventure DX Big the Cat run. Insane energy.

Here's my current list of recommended runs. It's pretty big, and it's not even complete yet. IMO this is one of the best GDQs in terms of quality runs.

Portal 2
TMNT3
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Marble Madness
Half-Minute Hero
Contra
Contra III
Castlevania block
Titanfall 2
Kirby Air Ride
Kirby 64
Ape Escape
Punch-Out block
The entire Silly Games block (starts at Silent Hill 3 and ends at TRAG)
Clustertruck
C&C Red Alert 3
Mario Blind Relay
SMB3 All Forts Race
Grand Poo World 2
Minecraft
Mega Man block
Tetris Effect
TAS block
Dark Souls
Zelda: Breath of the Wild (and then watch the silly Youtube animation if you haven't yet)
LttP/SM Combo Randomizer
Chrono Trigger

I still recommended avoiding Split/Second due to an overly cringey runner. So far I haven't seen any other "avoids".

I have to give my strongest recommendation to the Minecraft run. It was already going to be exciting no matter what to watch how the guy deals with a totally unprepared-for world, sans glitches. This run lived up to that and far more. I considered myself an expert in movement within this game with all my weird bucket climbing tricks, but then this blew my mind. He builds stuff FAST. There's one particular moment in a cave where he bridges his way up and around one room to another room and simultaneously obstructs the monsters from below from shooting at him. Throughout the run he also builds his way out of basically ever touching water, treating each river like the floor was lava, lest the water slow him down. He uses shears and spammed leaf blocks everywhere which was an interesting trick; I expected he'd have to whip out a calculator and solve a linear algebra system to minimize his eye of ender throws, but I had never thought of just drawing straight lines out of plentiful leaf blocks to graphically find where the lines intersect. He didn't quite need to do that all the way but demonstrated it and so many other tricks can be done in this game.

I didn't even know there was a Japanese community running this game, answering all my prayers that this would become a speed game. He borrowed a lot of knowledge from those runners.

yeah I'll second this, i was skeptical coming into the run but it ended up being alot more entertaining than i was expecting

Since it's a sandbox game there's endless possibilities for weird new categories too. Race to build a machine that processes 1000 creepers! Race to mine out or blow up an entire chunk! Race to beat a woodland mansion/jungle ruins/ocean monument! Race to dig up enough emeralds for a big trade! Race to acquire diamond armor! Race to build a machine that calculates PI!

I recommend avoiding the Zelda: Link Between Worlds run not because the runner is bad or cringey, but because it's a terrible slog of a speedrun to sit through and the couch is unforgivably dull and boring. They also seem to think they're comedians, but their jokes only ever appeal to a crowd of one (themselves).

Also, they nearly managed to kill hype.

Oh yeah, re: the chat thread.

Having been an active participant in the chat threads of the past couple years, I'm still fine with it no longer being a thing. I was not okay with all the inappropriate stuff that started getting posted; we went from Comfy Samus last year (cool and fun) to literal Inkling porn in January (loving gross and nobody should have to tell you that's inappropriate).

The lack of a chat thread this time didn't affect my enjoyment of SGDQ; Discord was all I needed if I wanted live reactions. And that channel thankfully stayed appropriate at all times.

Thankfully, the opposite can be claimed of the couch crew and announcer for the Majora's Mask run. Not only is everyone knowledgeable about the run, but the run itself is extremely optimized to make maximum use of each 3-day cycle and contains a number of extremely difficult techs. Also, the announcer goes to absurd lengths to entertain with even anonymous unsigned donations - to the point, in fact, that "anonymous donates $50 with no comment" briefly became a running gag.

Personally I think there was a good amount of chatting going on in this thread, and I'd call the experiment a success since it kept that and got rid of the creepy spank bank stuff.

Same, I wasn't much of a fan of how the chat threads gradually became 90% white noise and hornyposting, which made any attempt at actual "chat" pretty much impossible. If I wanted that I'd just keep the twitch chat open.

Definitely agree. The Link Between Worlds run was pretty bad not because of the gameplay but because the commentary was just bad. Like you say, not cringey or anything, just ... bad. Un-energetic, not funny, forced, just bad.

It was fun the first time because I never had the chance to live-react at that frequency before and there were some tender moments interspersed from all the white noise and (smaller) sections of fanart posting through the longer runs. It had a good if fragile balance to it. This year this was fine too, more of a have cup of tea/coffee in one hand and commenting with the other, more active when something really neat is going on stream. Going forward I'd say this is the safer way of maintaining a GDQ active thread.

This reminds me of the Burnout Paradise run from AGDQ 2018. The run itself was just okay, until the announcer accidentally misread "dollars" as "daughters" and this quickly spiraled into a running gag with a bunch of viewers donating various family members. And then the run itself ended up being a WR! :) A great couch/host can really improve the mood.

Yeah, I would say this thread was fine as well. The hype does die down a bit until an excellent run comes up, but I'd rather the thread be slow than shut down due to things going too far again whenever a mod (or even appointed IK) isn't around to stop things fast enough.

the great thing about this sgdq is that there were only like 2 runs that were flat-out not good. every run i saw of games i like were all good runs and i have not heard anything bad about runs of games i don't care about or missed. i'd say this was maybe the most consistently good gdq ever.

Yeah, honestly if I wanted I could've made my recommendations list twice as long with the descriptions "very good, solid run" for most. I just picked out the ones that stood out for me. I had a chance to watch Bawk's Resident Evil 2 run VOD and that was a lot of fun too.

There's a moment in Split/Second where a donation comment asks him which racing game he prefers: Split/Second or Blur, and the runner literally opens his backpack mid-run and pulls out a copy of the latter and waves it around on stream.

Totally surreal.
